I can't think of a top 5 right now but my list would include Al Pacino and Dustin Hoffman.
I agree with Dustin Hoffman, but I don't think Pacino is versatile enough.

1) Marlon Brando
I did not include dead people in my list. If this is permitted I may have to reconsider.
Gotta be able to include him. Anybody who doesn't have him on their lista) hasn't seen all his moviesB) knows absolutely nothing about acting/TheMethod

my favorites are:Bill Murray80's Eddie MurphyChristopher WalkenJohn Travolta (i know a lot of his movies have sucked, but i have liked him in everything and think a few of his performances are classic)Al Pacinoa couple of younger guys who could crack the list in the future are Benecio Del Toro, Clive Owen, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Terrance Howard

Whoever mentioned Nicholson, good call. He is my favorite actor of all-time. I've heard people say he is a one-note actor and can only play one type of part, but those people have obviously not seen many of his movies. He is a tremendous actor.Pacino/De Niro almost go without saying.....those two and Nicholson are pretty much the bridges between the old generation and the newest generation of actors.I don't think anyone has mentioned him, but Bogart was the man.I also have to give a mention for Peter Sellers. His work in Dr. Strangelove alone puts him up there for consideration.
