11 rebuys later...

Recommended Posts

 I decided to try a NL $5 Rebuy Tournament on Ultimate Bet a couple of days ago. First place was a direct entry into a $215 buy-in tourney. More direct entries would be added depending on the number of rebuys and add-ons. Going in I made 3 rules:1. Don't change my game because it is a rebuy.2. Do not rebuy!3. Do not add-on!Never having played a rebuy tourney before, I had no idea what to expect. Boy was it interesting! I managed to get a nice stack built and at the end of the rebuy and add-on period I had a little better than average stack. I ended up busting out when I lost ANOTHER coinflip, but my point was what is everybody else's strategy when playing rebuys? Do you avoid them alltogether? One player (who started and finished at my table) was totally whacko! He paid his initial buy-in of $5.50 and immediately rebought! He ended up rebuying 10 more times! Not a typo - it says 10! He also chose to add-on for another $5.00. buy-in - $5.5011 rebuys - $55.00add-on - $5.00TOTAL - $65.50This guy spent $65.50 where the most he could have won was an entry into another tourney. Is this crazy or do people usually go crazy with rebuy tournaments?

i play the 3 dollar rebuy on royal vegas sometimes, and it is a good value...when i won it, i rebought first hand (for double chips), busted, double rebought again, and added on.total of 15 bucks.... plus the vig.. .cant remember thatbut it paid over 500 for first. you have to remember that rebuy tournaments have bigger prize pools so it merits more investmentits also a good way to accumulate chips.. people go ballistic early on, and you often have to gamble in huge pots... the risk vs. reward is great, because you cant get eliminated.... just be sure to have adequate bankroll for these, which is why i tend to avoid the 20 and 25 dollar rebuys (i love the 20 and 25 freezeouts tho)

I HATE rebuy tournaments. I played a live one and had no idea what I was getting into. $100 entry - 400 chips. Immediate add on of 400 chips for $40. 1st 90 minutes - Under 400 chips - rebuy 400 for $40. Busted - Rebuy 400 for $40 or 800 for $80. At break - No matter chip count - add on 800 for $60. Crazy stuff. Within 3 hands one guy rebought the 800 twice. That's 100+40+80+80=$300 within 3 hands of the start of the tournament.I went thinking I would spend $100, maybe $200. I spent $280 and ended up 22 of 113. I'll never do it again. I'll play at another casino's $220 Freeze Out next time.

I avoid them unless I am willing to rebuy and add-on. I think you have to look at it this way because people like the guy you described are closer to the rule than the exception. ZH

freezeouts
I have come across this term a few times, but I'm not clear on what they actually are. Could someone please explain?
No rebuys. No add ons. The WSOP Main Event is a Freeze Out, for instance.

Simply a tourny that does not allow rebuys

Sometimes it pays off, if you remember this past year, Daniel rebought 27 times in the $1,000 + rebuys event. He finished 3rd and profited about 50k. He said he just decided to play every single hand in the rebuy period. Anyway, I guess if you have the BR to do something like that, i'm not going to fight ya.

I don't like multiple rebuy tournaments, but if you play them you have to play them right. Last year in $3 rebuy to a $650 WSOP satellite I saw a guy rebuy 15 times and he qualified. Don't know how he fared in the next one. Your example does not sound like a profitable move.I do like them with 1 rebuy and an add on. I just add it up and plan on that being the buy in.I play a limit tourney 2-3 times a month that has a $25 entry with $10 rebuys and add on. I like it in the limit format because if you take a bad beat without going bust in the early rounds you can rebuy. A player rarely rebuys more than twice.Erik

I do recommend adding on if you're in a decent position at the break, but usually rebuying is just building the prize pool.If it's a qualifier though, I don't mind people building up the number of qualifying spots :D

You think that is crazy, try playing in a $1 rebuy tourney. It is unreal to see what some people do. Ive sat there and watched some guys go all at least every other hand and rebuy up to 20 times. Its unreal sometimes...
