crash and burn...

I'd say working on the mental aspect of poker would be something to try. Thinking your way past the bad beats, forgetting that they ever happened, but learning from them. Meditating isn't a bad idea. I probably wouldve laughed and called myself a hippie for advising that 6 months ago, but it does help. Were you playing 5/10 NL before? 6k isnt a crazy swing for that game. It's been said, but you can't play with what you're not comfortable losing. If you're playing for a living, then you can't afford to take shots above your bankroll. A couple losses at that level and you're done, busted, broke, dead. Truthfully, poker is not fun, it's a sick game that's just going to frustrate you constantly without end. It takes a special type of person to play for a living and enjoy it. I guess it's still better than a 9-5 though (if you're winning). gl in your future endeavors, whether in poker or something else.

We're born poor, we die poor. everything in between is variance. You may want to not risk half your bankroll in one week again. Risking ones bankroll is about the worst thing a poker player could do. Drop down in limits and keep on keepin on.

I've lost $50,000 in a day before, $25,000 in a day before a few times. I've made $35,000 in a midnight to noon session. If you are a to expect to be a good winning poker player your bank roll should be able to sustain what you can lose in a day. If you are feeling the sting of a loss as badly as you describe you are playing way out of your limits. You might not even be good at hold em at all. You are probably a donk who got lucky a few nights. Whatever you do, DO NOT TAKE OUT A LOAN FOR $10k. That would be moronic. $6k is hardly even a loss in the context to medium - high stakes poker. if you have $14k, there is no way you should be playing a limit where you can donk half your bank roll off or close to it in one night. $500 NL games is where you should be playing with $10k - 15k. 20k-25k, maybe $1000 or $2000 buy in games. 20k, play 25/50 LHE and 50/100 in weak line ups.A loss won't sting if you have the roll to support it. If I were to lose my whole roll today, it wouldn't be $X I lost. It would be much more than that. The time I need to rebuild, yadda yadda. So play within your roll.

No limit, ive played with you on bodog before, definitely solid, i know you probably have the skills to pull out of the downswing.Ive worked a ton in the nightlife/promotions business in the past, a business degree will help you a ton if you are interested. Its far from working for the man, usually pays 15-25bucks an hour and the promos are usually 4-6hours or less at a time. Its a great job in the flexibility it provides, its not a daily grind, each day is different. You could work 20 hours a week and bring in 3-500 a week which is at least "Bill-paying money" and if you find you like the business there is good money in managing promotions. You could work 3 nights a week from say 6-10p or 10-2a and 2 promos on saturdays and be at a decent level while still having a TON of time to work on your game until you can take the next leap. This goes for you and anyone else, if you are looking to get in the business PM me, I have plenty of contacts and its a good part time job for people who need a safety net when they are getting serious about poker. Please be 21+ (lots of alcohol/bar promotions) and dont be a total flake.

op: "So, it's been the roughest patch of my playing days this past 2 weeks. "you must be new to the grind or playing out of your roll if 2 bad weeks are killing you. understand:"ups and downs. smiles and frowns." that's the life of a grinder. if you can't deal with it, get out. i did. and i'm much happier for it. and i've been playing for 13 years.

learn how to play limit holdem than progress.
Exactly what I was going to say. Very hard to lose $10 grand playing 5-10 limit, unless you have no idea how to play. Very easy to lose $10 grand playing 5-10 No Limit.
Well because 5/10 limit you need a br of like 3k and for 5/10 nl you need a bankroll of 20k+.If you compared 5/10 limit to something like 2/4 nl it would be closer.

The money obviously matters to you. I really don't know if you can be successful at poker when you can't detach yourself to the money you're playing with. Maybe you should look into something else rather than playing for a living.
And re-evaluate your skills ... maybe you're not as good as you think you are playing at the current limit.

1. don't get a loan2. play within your limits3. set aside "poker money" from regular money (stocks bank acct.)4. take a break, if the transfer time is enough then start playing again after that5. During the break re-evaluate your game. Read the strat forum, read (or reread) SS1 and SS2 and any other poker books you may or may not have read.Swings like this are not uncommon, I had on ethis summer, I killed my local game for 9 months straight, didn't cash for 3 months straight. Killed the games at the local casino for months and then could hardly scratch out a win.But I was playing within my bankroll, so it didn't hurt financially, but emotionally it hurt. I knew it would turn around and now it has back to where I was and playing better now then ever.

The swings are tough, i agree with everyone else u need to take a little break. The worse thing to do would to take out a loan. Just re evaluate your game and get bak in when you feel your ready.

first of all quit :boohoo: you lost f ?>??? 6,000 grand. Get a job you have a damn college degree and quit playing poker if you have to go to a public forum for advice. 6 grand big deal if that hurts pay your bills first, buy some food and stop by the bank for some change rollers and invite your friends over for a exciting night of nickle dime poker probably more in your league. Also turn the WPT off on Wednesday nights, you will never be on TV.

Thought I'd finally make my first post and stop lurking. This topic is close to home for me, but the solution is quite simple. I built up a $28, 000 bankroll starting with 1-2 no limit and progressing to 10-20 no limit in 6 months. I then proceed to hit a cold streak and lost $16, 000 in 3 weeks. Yes, bad beats happen to everyone, the key is to move down to a reasonable limit you can afford and grind away. Taking out a loan to play 5-10 no limit would probably be the dumbest idea. Go play 3-6 or maybe even 2-4 no limit and forgot about the days when you were scraping $400-$600 pots - I now play 3-6 no limit and am building a good roll once again - kinda tough to swallow when I got used to winning pots as big as $5000 but you gotta play within your bankroll and limits.

I've decided to take a break like everyone suggested, not take out a loan, and when I go back, I will play 1/2nl with a $2000 bankroll and grind it out slowly. As for jobs, I do have 2 smaller companies that I run which aren't very successful as of yet, but I have one much bigger idea that I'm looking into as the "actual job". As many of you have said, I HATE working for "the man". Although poker isn't my absolute solution, I do acknowledge it buys me time to decide what it is I really want to pursue.BTW, 6k hurts. It doesn't screw me over. I still have all bills paid and I'm still totally fine in general. I still go out to eat constantly and I live a relatively lavish lifestyle. I was just posting because losing 6k is irresponsible and also painful regardless. The money I have on the side right now is fine for now and definitely manageable, just not optimal. Hope that helps. The advice, good and bad, all helped in some way.GL
