what does a person have to do to become a pro.

Recommended Posts

We all have to start somewhere when we learn the game of No-Limit Holdem. So i am asking everyone where does a guy start.does he start reading books on Starting Hand Requirements?does he start just playing and learn by trial and error?all i am asking is where does a guy start, what books to read, what are important concepts to master.Layne Flack, i am sure just didnt walk into the card room without knowing how to play before.  what did he do to get where he is today?
Search books buy 2-3 to start.Play LIMIT 1st, Play for free, and play the turnys.Play NL, but low cost turnys 1st!Play cash games NL, (In about 6months - 2 years)Ask parents for rent money, Get girlfriend to hit the streets, Sell Big screen TV, OHHHHH wait! This is what happened to me, Ohh well Good luck.

ok, my serious reply. read books, start with beginner oriented books and work your way through to the advanced books. check out the book forum for ideas on which.play money wont cut it, your gonna have to get in the trenches and lose money while you learn to apply what you've read.GL.PS put the whole turn pro on hold till you actually understand what is going to be involved, you might not like what you find out as you gain skill and knowledge. learn to play first.

Oops my bad--it was Laak--I'm not supercomputer man. Still read Sklansky only if you made it through high school. Otherwise you have to read it, like me, three times---or never play and then you're heads up the winner.Fullhouse7 :wall:

If you are absolutely clueless to texas holdem...read Ken Warren teaches Texas Holdem...get some hands in ect., and super system 2 and the theory of poker ...then win the WSOP Main Event TP/MM, sign a deal with PokerStars and you are set

You have to play real money to learn anything. .01/.02 is a big step up from Play money.Learn Pot Odds, Learn starting hands.Play .01/.02, learn how people bet, what the bets mean.Read books if you want, it helped me, some people dont, and they do just fine.Play until you can beat it pretty regularly, then move up to .05/.10There is no set format to follow, that is probably the safest.
Aaaaah, safest ? Yeah .05, it'll take him light years to go broke at that rate.Turn Pro/Make Nickles

Don't read that book. It will hurt your game. When I started out I played .25/.50 and I quickly jumped to .50/1. However, after that I lost a few hundred $ playing with a bankroll of $50 at a time. I think it's hard to avoid losing a little bit of money. However, it wasn't long before I played 3/6 or 5/10 shorthanded for a profit.

First, I can’t believe no one was willing to help the OP out. I can’t tell you how to become a pro but maybe I can help you get started.I would say the first thing that you should do is figure out why you really want to be a pro. If you have a compelling enough reason to do something you will more then likely get it. Then develop a plan on how to get there.Learn the rules of the games that you want to play.Buy a book read it, study it, and practice in play money so that you understand the strategies. Once you have the concepts that you have studied and can apply them. It is now time to get a real money account. There is a completely different type of play with real money verse play.I recommend starting with limit hold’em the swings won’t be as big as some other games. You will also be able to develop other skills with this game, as well as a bankroll.Thing you should learn.· Table image…getting people to respect your raises, aggressiveness ect.· Your own betting patterns.· How to mix your game up.· Most importantly you will develop your ability to read your opponents. The saying goes “ It doesn’t matter what I got, if I know what you have.”· Bankroll management. The book I would recommend is Super System 2. It’s a great starting book and has a great deal of games to learn. Most importantly I think you must have fun.I hope this helps you a little.

In all seriousness, there are things you have to consider if you decide to go this route that ostensibly have nothing to do with "poker".For instance: How do you plan on obtaining health insurance? Hopefully you won't ever need to use it...but if something catastrophic happens to you, you'll be damn thankful it's there. Also, can you pay your expenses, whatever they may be, for a time should you start to run bad? And you do know that you'll have to report your earning to the IRS (Tax time is going to SUCK), right?I'm just saying it's not quite as easy as they make it look on TV.That said, if you're serious, I'd consider playing part-time, maybe a couple hours a day, to make sure A. You can be a winning player, and B. It doesn't turn into a grind. The fact is that, contrary to how it may seem, you have to treat it like a real job, discipline wise.

I'm not a pro or anything, but I started out learning the rules of hole 'em. Then I learned how to deal and all that. Then I learned whats up with hands and which ones beat which other onesThen, read my first book. Then hit the casino, and experience changes everything! But seriously, I would say get a good book to read sit down and study it. There are plenty of good recomendations in the "Poker Books" section of this forum..GL

all right. someone has shamed the forum vets (myself included) for not giving serious advice to the OP.but how do we give serious advice to a post like this? the OP might as well have asked "how do i become a rock star? do i have to know how to play an E chord? i ask because i can't sing worth dog poop."

Multiple levels of play---the best poker players play the player---it's not some mathematical formula.  Proof---Layne Flack beat a super computer a couple months ago.Fullhouse7
I've read many of your posts. I'm still on the fence about whether you're a retard or an ironic genius. I lean toward the former, but reserve the right to change my mind if I see evidence to the contrary. This post is not one of those evidences, however.
