shimmering wang's magnificent music exchange program

Recommended Posts

Hey. There are all sorts of beautifully different and divergent musical tastes in this forum, and I thought I'd start a music exchange program. Here's how it works...Describe a genre accurately (death metal, pussy rock, who cares, whatever).Suggest a band you think most people (fans or not fans) have never listened to before. Suggest a song by the same band. Include the album title. You may suggest more than one song or more than one band (but don't go overboard). You may offer your expertise on more than one genre. You may submit requests.Alright, Wang will go first.1) Category- Indie Rock. Band- Spoon. Song- The Way We Get By (Kill the Moonlight) Anybody who is an indie rock fan has heard this song before, so this is more for people looking to take the leap. Give it a shot. It's impossible not to dig. 2) Category- Country Band- Palace Brothers (or Bonnie "Prince" Billy) Song- New Partner I don't even like country music that much, but a few years ago a friend made me a "country influence" CD, and he kinda tricked me by just putting a few down-home all-the-fixins country songs on the CD. This is one of them. Country music. I love it3) Category- Power Pop/Rock Band- The New Pornographers Song- Twin Cinema (Twin Cinema) If you like power pop or pop rock, this song will knock your socks off. Strong and simple guitar presence, good hooks, and no weird chords or key changes you've never heard of.Okay, I hope this topic doesn't bomb. Offer your respective expertises.Wang

Genre: MetalBand: MushroomheadAlbum: XXSong: Solitaire UnravelingThere are two singers, one is the deep voice that screams and the other is a melodic singer who has a kick ass voice. This is the song that really got me into metal. You might have to listen to it more than once because I didnt really care for it when it first came out but by the third time I couldnt stop listening to it.

Classic RockThe BandThe WeightDefinatly the best song came up by the Band. The Band is probably most famous for the Last Waltz. The music is pure, not fuddled up by strange guitar riffs, pure feeling. The best version is the one they play with The Staples on the last waltz.

Genre: Political PunkBand: Bombs Over ProvidenceSong: I've Got Your Revolution Right Here, WiseassAlbum: Liberty's Ugly Best FriendThis is a band I saw open for Goldfinger about 5 years ago, and instantly fell in love. Their lyrics, while somewhat difficult to decipher at times, are like a mix of an anarchist and a PhD in Political Science. Musically it's fairly standard punk fare, although a little more musically mature, IMO.

Classic RockPink FloydBrain DamageDark Side of The MoonA few words can be said about this album. Best Ever. It was on the top 50 for over 350 WEEKS, not days. It gets you into a very relaxed state. Pink Floyd is one of the greatest and most influential bands out there. Remember:There is no dark side of the moon. As a matter of fact, its all dark really.

Yea sorry, I just can't concentrate that much when smoking a doobie..... but alright here's one:Category: Trip-Hop RemixesBand: Zero 7 (redoing Radiohead)Song: Climbing Up the WallsI believe Zero 7 is the band that remade this song.....anyway I am just a huge Radiohead fan and this is the best remake of any of their songs I have ever heard (unless you count the hilarious cover of "Street Spirit" by The Darkness). Very good beat, good bassline, does the trick.

Category: B-Boy Hip Hop Band: People Under the StairsSong: Montego SlayAlbum: O.S.T.One of my favorite hip-hop songs of all time. It is a very laid back , chill song....if you plan on lighting one up, I highly suggest putting this song on the playlist. Very smooth song, no rapping about guns/hoes like the "gangsta" rappers do. People Under the Stairs, need more credit and they never get any, so there ya go.

Classic RockBob DylanBlood on the Tracks (album)Probably the best Dylan album out there. With songs like Tangled Up In Blue and Simple Twist of Fate, its tough to beat. Its very acustic (sp), and lyrical. No hard solos here, except maybe some harmonica. I give it a 4.5/5

Genre: Chill-Out ElectronicaArtist: Ullrich SchnaussSong: BlumenthalAlbum: A Strangely Isolated PlaceI've never done hard drugs, so I'm guessing here, but I this song sounds to me like the musical version of tripping out on some good shit. Extremely blissful.

Genre: Hmm, Space-Folk. Did I just coin a word?Artist: The Album Leaf & Bright EyesSong: Hungry For A HolidayAlbum: I googled, and discovered it was on a compilation of holiday songs. I don't think it's still on release. This is a beautifully melodious song, and while I haven't a clue what the lyrics mean they sound great.

Genre: OrchestralSong: The Mission ThemeArtist: Sergio LeoneAlbum: The Mission OST?This is very different from the music Leone wrote for the westerns like Good, Bad, Ugly and Once Upon a Time in the West. It stands alone, as opposed to being the background piece to what's on the screen. Very powerful with some cool chanting.

Style: American Punk RockBand: XSong: Johnny Hit and Run PaulineAlbum: Los AngelesThe album Los Angeles by X is considered one of the landmark albums in American punk. Whenever I think of X, "Johnny Hit and Run Pauline" is the first song that comes to mind, so I would recommend this first. It uses the guitar riff from "Johnny Be Goode"..... X also does a cover of The Doors "Soul Kitchen" that is pretty good on the same album...

Style: ReggaeArtist: Burning SpearSong: "My Roots" , "Mek We Dweet", "Marcus Garvey"Album(s): I believe all can be found on his Ultimate Collection greatest hits compliationFor anyone out there that listens to Marley, I suggest giving Burning Spear a try as well....behind The Wailers/Marley/Tosh/Bunny Wailer and that whole crew, I would put Burning Spear (and Steel Pulse) as the best reggae artists ever....the 3 songs above are 3 of my personal favorites, and give you a taste of Spear's style....."Foggy Road" is a good listen for his early work as well.

Genre: Indie/RapBand: Cannibal OxSong: A B-Boy's AlphaAlbum: The Cold Veinmy favorite rap group. their beats are electrical and rough, unlike anything i had heard before. their lyrics are awsome, no gangsta garbage. the two rappers that make up the group have very different voices and styles which keeps it interesting. wang, if you like del you will like these guys. heres one of their lines: "flows be bangin in the paint throwin elbows, my first fight was me against five boroughs."

Genre: Genius Pop/RockBand: Jim O'Rourke (Chicago-based musician/engineer/producer/occasional member of Sonic Youth/occasional Wilco collaborator/occasional member of FennOBerg)Song: "Insignificance"Album: InsignificanceIf you are interested in sophisticated pop music, this album will be your cup of tea. There are straight up rock tunes, laid back folk tunes, and staggering feats of pop songwriting like the title track. Odd time signatures that feel 100% natural, delicious progressions and melodies. So much to enjoy.Genre: Genius Pop/RockBand: Jon Brion (LA-based musician/engineer/producer/film score composer/one time member of The Grays/frequent Aimee Mann collaborator/frequent Fiona Apple collaborator/one man band show every Friday night at Largo in Hollywood)Song: "Walking Through Walls"Album: MeaninglessThis is maybe the best pop song of the decade that no one has ever heard. Straight up Beatles-influenced piano rollicker with killer lyrics like "I'm standing up straight/I'm standing up tall/I've no time to waste/I'm walking through walls," and "Get out of my way/Motherfucker/Start moving you all/Motherfucker/I'm losing my brakes/I'm walking through walls."Genre: FolktronicaBand: Four Tet (aka Kieran Hebden)Song: "Hands"Album: RoundsSome of the most groundbreaking electronic work from a prolific artist. Working with a few acoustic instruments, a computer, and a hi-fi Hebden works in a genre that he helped pioneer - organic snippets constructed into something emotional and beautiful. If this track doesn't knock you on your ass you need to listen to better music.More later.
