A preflop raise would have changed the entire hand, in your favor. But like you said, that was a mistake.I think you played it correctly from the flop on, giving him a bad price to draw and a good price for a hand like A9 to keep calling. Just got unlucky on the river... It happens.

Getting it in on the turn doesn't change this outcome.Raising preflop does, but you know that allready.I don't play it any differently, he just caught a three outter.
Raising AK hasn't been working out to well for me, for awhile. I think I only might raise it late in position if its suited. More hassle then its worth, its entirely overrated. I feel better raising 77 then AK, and that doesn't say much.

You played the hand fine. When you raise A-K preflop, it's to get rid of hands like J-10, not hands that you have dominated. The fact that you got the A-9 to keep calling actually worked out great for you, because you got him to put in another $200 drawing to three outs, and probably would have gotten a large call on the river if a 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, J, Q, or K came. The fact that the 9 came off on the river instead is just bad luck.

I agree that there are times when calling (instead of raising) pre-flop with AK is a good move. For example: 1) Smooth-calling with the plan to come over the top of a very LAG player to your left (trap money in the pot first, then isolate the maniac.) 2) Calling a late-position raiser from the BB whn there are no other callers. 3) Some one reraises your initial flop raise, and you decide to call and evaluate post-flop (you have a strong read to put him on a pair 88 to QQ...)Nevertheless, it changes the play of the hand entirely-- often leading to difficult decisioins post-flop. From the three reasons listed, your choice not to reraise is because you want to try a trap play against a weaker hand. The danger about a trap play is that the trapper (in this case: you) is often the player who ends up getting trapped (your opponent out-flops you, for example). The last reason occurs when you put your opponent on a pair, and plan to fold if you don't catch a flop. But what if you're wrong and you flop a king when your opponent has aces. Or what if he only has TJ-suited and catches a flop of A J T? By not reraising your opponent, you may fail to correctly judge the strength of his hand. This hand you have posted is the perfect example of the trouble you can get into by not raising AK pre-flop. Had you raised pre-flop, you probably wouldn't be in this mess (although, hay *may* still have called)... Personally, I *usually* raise AK pre-flop (probably smooth-calling only one out of every eight to ten times). As Doyle Brunson says, you don't want to go broke in an unraised pot (i.e. no raise pre-flop). I tend to tread lightly in a hand where there was no raise pre-flop even if I catch a decent flop.By the way, I think you played this hand properly from the flop, onward.Cheers,Merby

I just read my above post, and it sounds like I thnk AK is huge. I should mention that AK is a drawing hand, and not worth much if you miss the flop. My above comments were talking about the times that you do catch top pair on the flop, but snce you had not raised pre-flop, have failed to correctly judge your opponents' hands (or allowed them to catch up, as in the posted hand).Don't get married to ANY pre-flop monster hand!Cheers,Merby

I completely agree with you, its a drawing hand. Most of the time I get paid with it is when I limp and fire huge at people holding K 10 or K J. If you possess good judgment it's rather easy to get away away from in limped pots. It just doesn't appeal to me cause if you raise it and miss the flop your obligated to throw out a "take" bet, and if you are in a wild room 9 times outta 10 your getting called. It's almost not worth the effort some nights. Occasionally I reraise with it, but most of the time I limp and just put the screws to weaker hands. It sure as hell didn't work in this situation but it definetly has worked many times in the past. I love made hands, and I just bought poker tracker, and it showed me the same thing.
