limit versus no-limit

Recommended Posts

I'm rather new to online limit poker. I'd played limit fairly regularly over the past 3 years, but since I joined Pokerstars in June I'd played nothing but NL, its how I built my stack up from the wee 50 dollars I once bought in for.Well, after having played limit quite a bit the past 2 weeks, I must say that playing 1-2 limit is a much more profitable game than .50-1 NL. The players are soooooo bad. I thought players were bad at NL, but at limit its a complete joke.I was making on average about 52 dollars a day playing exclusively NL, usually for quite a few hours a day. The last 3 nights I've played at maximum 3.5 hours of limit poker and have won over 100 each night. Its almost laughable how bad the players are, and I hear they are even worse at partypoker. For anyone who plays exclusively NL, I strongly urge you to try out some limit poker online for awhile. I must say that I'm pretty much converted to limit now. You don't get the rush from it like you do NL, and it can be very frustrating because there is no real way to protect your hand, but in the long run the money you make is very much worth it. You might not have huge huge paydays like you do at NL, but you won't have days where you lose 2X the max buy in like you will at NL from time to time when your aces get cracked by kings. Before when I played limit at the casino or home games I would say I was an average at best limit player. Having literally played 10s of thousands of hands of NL, both in cash and tournaments obviously you become a much much much much better player. I would say that playing NL helps your limit game, and that limit helps your NL game.

I agree with you on this statement, however I am still in some way skiddish about playing cash games online. I love playing tournaments online but the cash games are best played, for me anyhow, in a B&M. I live in Norwalk, CA which is about 10 Mins away from Hawaiian Gardens, Bicycle Club, and Commerce, in each direction. I am pretty much in the Mecca of Card Clubs here in Los Angeles. Online play is convenient so that you don't have to travel to the casino and just play at home stuffing your face with a sandwhich in your PJ's but, nothing beats playing at these card clubs. I started playing 2-4 for a bit until I got comfortable with the fundamentals. Now if I do play limit, I will not go under 3-6. The competition in 3-6 compared to 2-4 is very different, the same with 4-8. Then I gave No Limit a shot and it is very difficult to go back to limit after see the profit of No Limit that I have been making. Looking Back, I can't say limit improved my reads because they call everything down to the river anyhow, but Limit did help with getting a better understanding of the game. Sorry for the long post, just had to make that statement.

I read about half to 2/3rds of the hands and it looked like good play from you.I just felt like pointing out he didn't get a runner runner, :D. He flopped a flush draw. You can diss his preflop coldcall with KJc for sure, but he flopped a flush draw with 2 overcards, then thought his J pair was best on the turn when he raised, plus he still has his original flush draw he flopped. Which of course he rivered. :)

Couldnt have worded it better myself. I was an exclusive NL and SnG player myself until about a week or two ago. I then started playing limit and am up about $150 or so in the last week 5 tabling $0.50/$1.00. My blog (link at the end of every post) kinda gives you an idea of my progression. My goal is to stick to the 300bb rule so I will continue to play $0.50/$1.00 until my BR gets to $600 then I will swap over to $1/$2.

Thanks for the post I'll mul over the suggestion. TBH I started as a NL SNG player too fearful of NL cash games, too affraid of the sharks. Tried it anyway after a while. Cursed it and played a bit too weak tight. Stuck with it after realising it's better to play like a Lion than a lamb. Now I'm the one hunting all the little ><{{{{'>. Thought about the LIMIT side but whenever I've tried it have found it too slow and mechanical. Plus hate not getting the protection. Found it a bit boring tbh. But have considered giving it another whirl. Might do. Depends how good i feel after reading Harmans bit in SS2.

please use the hand converter when posting hands, just way to much to read. Your play generally looked fine, just remember that downswings will happen in limit, be forewarned
