I was wondering about verbal tells. What sort of questions would one ask to there opponent to talk about the hand. In the thread I saw someone mention that saying softly what hands they may have etc to induce some sort of reaction. What can someone say to give you info if they are bluffing, don't have the strongest hand, have a monster. Someone saying "go ahead, call" to me would be a sign of weakness as they are scared they might get called. Any other ideas. What about you have to pay to play? How about nice laydown?

This is something that I have never really considered. Most of the time if I come across a talker at the table, he's just trying to unnerve the table and make people irritated or angry and thusly change you into a bad decision making machine. For that reason, I just let them talk and pay attention to how they physically play. Overbetting, looking at chips after they see the turn, stuff like that. That is a good question though.Los

With verbal tells i think you can use the old cliche, If he acts strong hes weak, and if he acts weak hes strong. But i concentrate more on the body language. Their body will tell me more than their mouth will while im asking the question. You see by their nervous ticks and their fidgity hands, and determine whether they are making a move. The feet, however, are the most honest part of the body. For instance, when a player moves all in and leans back on the balls of his feet, He more or less doesnt like his hand and is uncomfortable with the possible outcome.

The best verbal tells are simple.listen to who knows what they are talking about, and who sounds like a donkey.pretty simple. Listen to the guy who says "i had a feeling" or "sometimes you just gotta gamble"and the opposite of that, is the guy who asks people how long they;ve played for, or how often they play, if they play online. etc....

Look for the young guy with sunglasses, headphones, and a hooded sweatshirt. Then wait until he starts asking questions during a hand like he is on the WPT. Give off some pretty obvious (false) tells and take all his money.

The last time I was at the horseshoe they were spreading a few 1/2 must move games. I have only played at the Grand and Horseshoe. I think the 2-10 stud game at the Grand is a great game allbeit a rock garden.4/8 limit at the grand is not the game to play if you like money though.

hmm you got paid off, so i cant argue with it :-) as far as tells, i think it really depends on what you're playing and who you're playing with, i play a lot of games with 17-20 year olds just playing b/c they think they're good, and like someone mentioned earlier, the tells of looking at chips after the turn/river and fidgeting are probably the biggest ones among novices. Just read Caro's book and you'll be all set.I think it would be interesting to have a "foot cam" at a lot of tables. personally that's something i do that I'm trying to work on, my upper body i got under control but as a fidget-ty person in general who can never sit still anyways, my legs and feet go nuts sometimes, although its when im bluffing big or flop a monster, so it goes both ways. but i got really happy feet

Absolutely.Situational awareness is the key.

I know you asked about verbal tells, but I rely more on betting patterns than verbal or physical tells. A person can control their physical appearance or throw you a curve ball. But they have a hard time making significant changes to their betting pattern.Playing online has helped me with this skill (all you have is betting patterns to follow online).Just my two cents...

good point to the one who posted above me. online is a great school of poker because all the info you need is right on the screen, from exact chip and pot counts to betting patterns in conjunction to positional plays. betting habits dont lie. if someone is going 5X the blind when holding painted pocket pairs, and 4X the blind with AK, AQ, and 2X the blind with Ax your gonna notice that more often and it's going to help you more than anything your opponent is going to say.also, i would have to say that talkers, if they say they have a big hand, expect a big hand, at least second of third nutz. reasoning, they want to get called once, show everyone that they were not lying and then look for an opportunity to "bluff" with talking later. I still say zone out the speak and play your own game.Los

i'm going to go ahead and redirect your attention to what royal said. An easy tactic to recieve more information about your opponent is getting to know whether they are a good player or they are not. In a hand, if you start asking them questions about what kind of hand they have and all that, most of the time they just shut up and dont' answer. I've learned that if i ask questions like "so...how long have you been playing?" or "read any good poker books lately?" or stuff like that, they'll usually answer. If their answer is knowledgeable about the game of poker, usually its much easier to put them on a hand because you know they aren't some stupid donk that will make a play that's completely and utterly -EV.

The tone of someones voice can speak volumes about the quality of hteri hand. if they are nervous, you can usually hear it in their voice. if their voice is pretty smooth and confident and they are ble to produce a genuine smile then they have it. if what they say doesnt really make sense and or they ramble something or they are scared to breathe call quick

Generally in my home game, it's obvious when someone has a hand and when they don't. Breathing patterns of one guy is so obvious that we all chat about the hand (without that player) at work the next day. He never understands why people lay their hands down. Playing at the casino is different though. Time waiting to learn your players is not a luxury. I guess that I get my information just as most of you began to describe, physical more than verbal and the patterns in betting. I appreciate all the posts, more are welcome. :club:

Geezy,Goldstrike has a pretty good 3-6 limit and 1-2 Nl game (somtimes 2-5 on weekends). That is normally where I play, but Horseshoe and Grand are good too. I havent been to Horseshoe lately, but stay away from the 4-8 on the weekends. It is, or at least used to be, just kamikaze tables, with just about every bet, every hand being capped, which is good if you are catching cards....but it can be just as frustrating if you constantly get sucked out on and are running bad.Hollywood sometimes has a pretty easy 1-2 NL, $200 max buy-in game, which is good if your bankroll isnt too big.
