need some advice on my play!

Recommended Posts

Last night I played a Sat. for a WPT 10k buyin, 1st and 2nd get seats. I was second in chips with 46 players to go, about 9500, blinds were 200-400. This is the sequence of hands literally 3 in a row. Player in 3rd position raises all in with about 1500-1600 chips, he has been moving all in with junk all night. It was folded to me on the button and I have AJ suited, so I call, SB and BB fold. He has A6, rivers a 6. What would you guys do with that amount of chips in this position?Very next hand, cut-off position pick up 77, player in 5th position raises it to 800, he only has about 1100 left. I reraise to 1600, he moves all in, 300 more to call. I call he, has 44. Flop 246 Rainbow. Turn and river were blanks. What would you guys do here? Now I am down to 6000, pick up 57 in 6th position, 4 limpers, so I call, SB calls and BB checks it down, 7 players in the pot. Flop 468, 2 hearts, checked to me, I move all in happy to pick up the pot and stop the bleeding, folds around to 4th position who calls my all in and has me covered by like 200. He turns up AK, Ah, turn heart, river heart. What would you guys do here?Just looking for a different perspective to analyze my game, any advice helps . Thanks

You had the best of it 3 hands in a row, and got outdrawn 3 times in a row. Not much you can do to avoid getting sucked out on...

I would have played it the same. You had a run of very bad luck at a vital stage of the tournament. If you are not prepared to put your chips in under the circumstances you described, you will never win a tournament. There wasn't much else you could do under the circumstances.

Hey Jlowtrip, Im sorry for your misfortune. I believe that those first two hands were unavoidable, although some players might fold 77 in that spot knowing that you are going to have to put in 1900 total (this is far from a mistake though, I would have done the same thing you did). As far as the 3rd hand goes, the only advice I have to give is to not limp with a hand like 57. You still have 6000 in chips and even with blinds of 200-400 there is no rush to see flops at this point as you still have an M of 10. If you want to play hands like 57 in this spot, the only advice I have for you is to raise a good amount preflop and try to steal the blinds (of course, this works best if you have a tight/conservative table image.). Otherwise, fold as quickly as possible. I dont see wasting precious chips at this point in the tourney trying to hit a miracle flop with 57. Honestly, when you limp with a hand like this your goal is to hit two pair or a straight. How often does that happen? Not often. As far as post flop, you made the right play with the nuts and got very unlucky. From the hands you posted, I think you just need to wisen up a little preflop and you should be fine. Hope you can learn from this and best of luck in the future :-) -akatz

I think his point may be would you have played the hands preflop the way he did. If this wasn't his point, I'm changing it because I really want to know, lol. When you have a chip lead do you make that call with AJ and 88. Because I usually do not know what to do in those positions with those cards.-sm

Ok.. just for you then.Truth is, 1st hand, i would need a read, is this player in 3rd position desperate?, what do i know on him, would he be willing to make this move with a weak A?. call 70% of the time here unless i know he's tighthand 2 - villain made a min raise with a short stack. looks pretty stupid to me, I really want to call with 7's here, not sure how the table is laid out. there is a chance that i might just let this hand go. If i have a read on button, SB and BB, and i know i can iscolate, i push here myself.hand 3, i throw it way, why are we calling 400 with 5,7 who cares how many limpers are in the pot.

Thanks for the replies!! I appreciate the time and thought. My self analysis was I could not get away from the first 2 hands, the third hand I should have folded pre-flop because I was trying to hit a miracle. Although I did, it turned out bad. Honestly, I cannot even call the third one a bad beat because I should not have been in the hand!Definetly not looking for sympathy, just like to talk to others about my game and see others approaches. Thanks guys.
