gatortom64 1
I see it as the lure of easy money. All these people see is the final table and huge payouts. Not the long hours of thinking about every move you make, how should you bet, or raise, or fold. Am I running hot (Matusow) or cold (Daniel). Even with all the exposure (ESPN, FSN,Bravo, WPT etc..) the internet and B & Ms are packed. I remember going to Vegas in the late 80s and I think there were about 7 or 8 card rooms. Now almost every casino has one. I personally cannot wait unti the San Remo is redone as Hooters hotel and see if they get a poker room. Talk about STACKED!!!!Just my 3 pesos worth. Lupos5 0
Im not dumb enough to address this to DN, but I think that ESPN and the WSOP is definitely the reason. If Sammy Farha had won against Moneymaker, I have a feeling that poker would not have exploded in the same maner. However, Moneymaker won his seat in the already growing field of online poker, so it's tough to say. Any thoughts?

Saralynelle 0
Poker has been a true sport for more years than I can count on both feet and hands! I swear, I'm telling the truth. I believe the boobtube and online poker add to the fact of instant celebrity, fame and a nice chunk of change has something to do with it all.I just want to see more women playing this sport. It will be interesting to see how many turn out for the 2006 WSOP Tournament. It's the average every day Joe Schmoe stepping up with a chip and a chair and a crazy dream of winning. The thought process of "it only takes 6 lucky numbers to win the mega 350 Million Jackpot!" If Moneymaker can do it..by golly so can I!It will either keep going and become something to the extreme. In which case I see the bubble to burst in a few years. Or it can do the opposite and take off like Hockey. Then there's no turning back.I'm just tickled pink I've found a sport I enjoy whatever contributed to pokers insane popularity.

TV is an idiot box.C. Insult much?D. No one? Last time I looked in the mirror I saw someone. Me. So, yes, someone says "by golly" still to this day. E. No. I guess Hockey hasn't taken off. Just as Football, Baseball, Basketball, etc hasn't taken off. Those aren't sports now either are they now.F. Wow to you too. Thanks for playing.

I have to agree with you a lot here about hole cameras. Years ago you could buy videos of the WSOP that didn't even have the pocket cams. Only true fans of poker would shell out for those. Saralynelle 0
Kowbow Koop this is for you doll:As defined in the dictionary:sport.sport ( P ) Pronunciation Key (spôrt, sprt)n. Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively. A particular form of this activity. An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively. An active pastime; recreation. Isn't poker a competitive game? Which would then by all means be called a: sport.
grocery_mony 8
I am not dn but i will give my opinion on why it has taken off.I believe it wasnt just one thing but a "perfect storm" of events that made this happen, First was the movie rounders, it was a very well made movie with superb acting which if u saw u wanted to learn more about poker. Second was the internet, thte easy access small buy ins make it very easy and convenient to start playing poker and to learn fast.third was tv poker, wpt wsop and many other shows exposed the game and its players as a mainstream game played by very talented people not the shady game stereotype. And the one event that tyed it all together was Chris Moneymaker, when he won it gave everybody hope. he went from a guy no one ever heard of to the new face of poker overnight, and put the spotlight on internet poker which has exploded since then. While I tend to agree with you Saralynelle, your argument here is rediculous. By the same definition you quote poker is NOT a sport. Last time I checked, there is very little physical activity or exertion when playing poker. Is it a competitive, skillful game sure, but using the above definition of sport to justify calling poker a sport is ludicrous.Zarathustra

Saralynelle 0
Fine, poker is a mental/emotional game. The Boobtube has made it a "watchable" event on TV. Some would compare poker to being a competitive sport indeed.I will refer to it as a "competitive sport" then. :-)
theredpill99 0
Money and working for Corporations suck. They never promote from within but poker is perfect in that skill=opportunity and more money. You can be the best at your job in a corporation but if higher-ups hate you, you aren't going anywhere.
