$5 -$10 limit easier than $2 - $4 limit

Recommended Posts

went to Borgata last night and played $5 - $10 no limit. I decided before hand I was just going to play position poker, not get too creative or make any dumb plays. It was easier to read people and the board beacuse their check, call, and raises had more meaning so I can put them on hands a bit more accurately. At least no one was playing 8 - 3 off suit utg. Players actually reraised! Players actually folded! Much much easier. Anyone else agree, the more expensive games are, at times, easier?

in other words, what you are saying...those who play 5-10 limit are better than those who play lower limits?....if so yes, its true...easier to make money? that depends...i feel better players are easier to read, but also harder to read at times...newer players over value suited cards, which makes it difficult to put a solid read on them....this isn't always the case of course...

You're obviously a beginner. Your fundamental knowledge of the game is skewed. The game might seem easier, but people in this game fold too much to make the game easier. In other words you do not get your big hands paid off quite as much. You seem to be judging your success by the # of pots you win as opposed to the amount of money you win. This is a serious error. Some nights @ 8/16 I might only win 3 pots, but they were all $300+ pots so that set me way ahead for the session. A games toughness is judged by how much raising there is as well as how much multiway action there is. Generally you will look for games where people never raise and never fold. You dont need to worry too much about what the opposition has. If you have a hand worth showing down you should bet because they will always call. You should avoid games w/ alot of raising and not many people in the pot. This is a tough game and you will get worked. BTW, there are plenty of 5/10 games that ill be easier than some 2/4 games depending on who's playing., but not because they fold. 5/10 is still what I call a "recreational limit," i.e. Many drunk tards can afford to lose many racks in this game w/o getting in trouble.

I can see where the OP is coming from though. I know tons of people learning how to play poker and all this and they always want me to come to their home games. Reading is nearly impossible. They don't know how to play their strong hands, they slow play there bad hands like good hands. Confusing. When I get into games with my experienced friends, I can make reads, plays, steal, you can actually play.Weaker players don't grasp the concept if there are 4 of a suit out there and you bet half there stack, they call thinking there pair of 8's is good. I think experienced players think alike, and inturn some what easier to read.I mean I'm sure everyone here has experienced this right?

And weak players who are a bit better than the weakest players seem to hate when people are trying desperately to GIVE them their money. Theyd much rather "make plays" and have to "make reads" to win their money. I guess you could also not be playing for the money(which is fine). I play for a living, and am able to do so only because people try desperately to give me their money. Some days it seems like I do everything in my power to reject their wishes, but most days i oblige(sp??).

Read my post again. I'm talking about "making reads" on strong players because they are playing better poker than inexperienced players. If you sit down at a 5/10 table with someone who doesn't know what they are doing, how can you make a play at this person when the flop comes ragged and you have aces or something? You have no remote clue as to what they are playing because they don't know what they are playing. It's not a hard concept to grasp.I also understand you play for a living, I do not. Easy money is always good money. If you're playing in a game where people are dumping chips to you because they are inferior then so be it. But when you fire three times into a pot on a stone cold bluff against someone who doesn't know what a scary board is and says, "I have pocket threes", you just don't understand how they could make that play, calling you all they way down with 6th button.I hope I'm not the only person this happens to. My game selection is completely different now but when I first started out and learned some stuff this used to happen to me everytime I played. So ya it's not a matter of being a weak player winning money off weaker players, it's a matter of skill level and if your opponent has no skill level they don't even know how to play their own hand, how can you possible begin to fathum a strategy against this opponent, besides not play with them and wait for the nuts because the cards don't always come.

I think that's the problem with a lot of people, though. They're too concerned with making moves, bluffs, and fancy plays than actually playing good, solid, winning poker. If you're playing a beginner who is calling down with an underpair on a scary board, DON'T BLUFF. Bet your good hands and get paid off. It's easy.

Yeah, that's what I was sort of getting at. That's exactly the way I play. I was also agreeing with the OP about play being mediocre at 5/10 as well at 2/4.IMHO I think you can get a better player to lay down a hand than a bad player. That's not the strategy you want to use or anything. The goal in poker isn't to get someone to lay down a winning hand, the goal is win money. I'm not saying I try to bluff people all the time and make plays but when you first start playing, you play with donks, and a lot like a donk. Here's an example of what I'm talking about.I raised pre-flop with QQ and flopped second best set. Now I throw out a bet and get called.Turn bet a pot sized amount.River move in when the board paired. This girl sitting to my left looks at me and throws down KK for kings full. Now at first I was thinking okay she legitimatly slow played me. But when she flips up her kings she say, "I have a pair of kings, wait oh I have 3 kings, no a full house!"Absolutly no way I could read that. She didn't even know what she had. That's my only point. I agree with you completely just justifying my side of it.
