hold'em is the most boring form of poker

Recommended Posts

i've been playing a lot of triple draw (high, 2-7, a-5), omaha h/l, and stud h/l recently, and i've just gotta say, those games are so much more fun than holdem. holdem is too mundane, and realies on more luck than any of the other games imo. i feel that 2-7 or a-5 triple draw is the most skill oriented game. it's such a read heavy game and the betting dictates how each player is going to act on 3 streets (unlike holdem which limits your actions a lot). you must be attentive at all times at each of your opponents draws and what their playing styles in position, out of position, and must correctly read what your opponents "stand pat" implies. also, position is so much more important in this game and forces you to change up your playing style in each rotation.also in split pot games, it's awesome to figure out which of your opponents are drawing for the high hand, and which for the low hand, and ramming and jamming the pot when you read that you're the only one going for either the high or low.dont get me wrong, i've always enjoyed hold'em. but i feel that it's the most limited of the games. you only get to bet, call, fold, or raise and everyone is going for the same thing (the best high hand). in the triple draw games, you can choose all those actions, plus you get to act 3 times a hand (unlike just watching the flop, turn, and river get dealt). there's a much higher degree of psychological warfare as you must be able to read into each draw. in the h/l games, the added element of going for the high, the low, or scooping is much more entertaining that holdem's just high aspect.i can understand why dn is so upset that the wsop has gotten rid of all these fantastic games. not only are they more fun, but i've found them more sociable than hold'em. too bad texas hold'em dominates the airwaves, i think watching a good game of kansas city lowball would be much more entertaining (can you imagine chau giang getting phil ivey to discard his 9 low by standing pat on the last draw w/ only a j low... now that would be good poker)

I agree in many ways, but I do love hold 'em too. Since you share so many cards, so many decisions are so marginal.. calling, raising, folding..it's a facinating game too, I think...But I'm a sucker for triple draw, and stud h/l aka the game of kings

35 .... 35 of the 44 frigin games at the WSOP this year are Holdem :x This is the first year i'll have the BR to get to play and nearly every event is Holdem...But yea if you didn't notice i think holdem is very mundane and more crapshoot like than most other games. Atleast tournament NL holdem anyway. NL Holdem cash games are another factor...personally i don't make much money at them, but i know some people who do.I prefer Omaha, Tripledraw(any form), or Hi/Lo Stud anyday. But holdem is in the eye of America so thats what will be played this year.

Play stud high/low as much as you play hold'em and see what you think of it.I love hold'em but O8 is my favorite game.
True hi/lo stud does have a tendancy to get redundant...but atleast when i'm playing that i am counting cards as well...gives me a little more to do lol.

I have been playing Stud High SNG's at Stars. Stud is kina the second game I'm trying to be good at. I never placed higher than 3rd yet but I think I can get good enough to sell a stud book to Two Plus Two.Edit: Triple draw high? What place has that? I can't imagine that as a casino game.

My loves are Razz, triple draw, and stud hilo, yeah. Just more fun to me than holdem.Eventually I'll get good at holdem, I really need to, but it feels so boring for the most part. You see, for the most part, five cards total the entire hand. A lot of the time just your two. Whereas in a stud game, you see ten off the bat, and in triple draw you're seeing your discards and pairs and stuff.

Part of the _REASON_ Hold 'Em is so popular is that the game has that "any 2 cards can win" element. This keeps the money moving (i.e. more games, more pots, more RAKE).Also, the best starting hand and worst starting hand have a smaller gap in win probability than the same gap in Omaha Hi-Lo or Lowball, etc.AA vs. 72o in Hold 'Em doesn't have the same gap in advantage as 2-3-4-5-7 has over A-A-A-A-K in Triple Draw 2-7. So Hold 'Em is more "novice-friendly." IMHO.

I hope main stream poker gets so popular -- that as in the music industry -- there are certain people who purposefully go against the "main stream" music to purposefully be different.I can see it now:I don't play hold em' cause it's so mainstream. I play 08 only, with a little stud/hi on the side. I'm a real poker player. You're just a hold em' tv player, Yea.I see this happening. Anyone follow?- Jordan

I sat down at a 4/8 live game while I was waiting (over 2 hours) for another seat and had a conversation just like this with everyone at the table. We were talking about how crowded it was when I told everyone that Bally's was having a WSOP event across the street. Everyone had the same mentality (just a hold'em tv player type deal). It saddened me.There was this girl talking about how her husband was a professional poker player and he played on party. She said he had a bad month last 3 months :-) and was down something like $80,000! I said, "oh thats rough. The 100/200 can be a brutal game." She responds, "Oh no....He plays the 30/60." She obviously just wanted to have something to talk about but its still cheesy. Like someone saying hold'em players are sell outs.

I think some people actually think they are superior to Hold 'Em players just because its not their main game. I play Hold 'em more than any other game because its the most popular where I live and its usually the only game I can find. I am much better at O8 but I never get to play it. I love it when I' go to the casino and all the old timers playing O8 try to goad me into playing, not realizing that I play more O8 than they do.
