bitter sweet tournament experience...what's your tak

Recommended Posts

i played my first real live tourney on weds. at The Bike. $100+25 and made a deal when we got 2 handed to split the top 2 spots. it would have been nice to play it out and make the win official, but the tournament staff acted in a manner that let us know they wanted to get home. the tourney started at 7:00 and we were going on 12:30. when we got to 3 handed one of the staff members sat at the table with his hand on his chin in a "hurry the F up" manner. after we busted the 3rd guy i had a 21k-19k chip lead and we decided on an even split of $1,600 each. i was pretty pumped but disappointed at the same time. Also, they reminded us that no part of the $25 fee was taken out for the staff and be courteous and tip the standard 3-5%. the other guy i split the prize with tipped $100 and I was put in the uncomfortable possition of having to dish out a nice chunk. i had $40 in mind but ended up tipping $60. also, what place do you consider my finish? it didn't feel like a win, but i was happy to make it so far considering i play cash games 99% of the time. thanks.

The juice in that nooner night tournament has always put me off, 25 bucks is just nuts. So I think your tip was right on if not more than I would have shelled out, the whole the 25 bucks does not go to the staff is BS.

Usually if the chip split is pretty even (as your was) a chop is a pretty good idea.Often in those tourneys by the time you get to heads up the blind structure makes it an all in raceAnd it can turn into a pure luck no skill needed match. As for tipping,You paid 125 to play (I believe the dealers don’t get all the 25, the house will take its cut)You won 1600, minus the 125 to play (1475 net) you gave a $60 tip which is 4%WOW so generous, personally I always give 10% of what I am ahead by so even the $100 was kinda cheap,Don’t forget when they are dealing you in a tourney for 3 hours they are not getting tips from a possible live game. Also in many places it’s a minimum wage job that relies on the tips. However at the end of the day its your money and upto you to do what you want with it,Guess it depends on if you believe "what goes around comes around"

the reason i lowballed was because they were practically kicking us out of the door. one of the floor guys is sitting at the table watching us 3 handed with a "get the f outta here" look on his face. then he gets up and mumbles to his buddy, "we're gonna be here ALL night" or something of that nature. i think that is unacceptable. i'm not a stiff. i tip 20-30% on meals when the service is good. i just thought how they acted was out of line.

Up at Turning Stone, all of the smaller buy-in tournies now have a $5 add-on where you get 300 more chips and the money goes straight to the dealers (typically you start with 1500 or 2500 chips). This strategy has alleviated most problems and dealers now often want to deal tournies, basically because they get $50 for dealing out their first table. If you want to allieviate the dilemna that you faced at the end of the tourney, find out who was/is the TD at your casino (typically one of the poker room managers is the resident tourney director) and suggest this to them.

The juice seems to be very in in the Calif card rooms, I'm up in SF and they are alway very high % of the buy-in. And they always claim that none of that goes to the dealers. I generally tip about 2%. I'm not rich and when I make a score in a tourney, I need that money. $40 for a $1600 pay out is a good enough tip. That being said, as much I want to play and win outright. Generally, in those $100 buy-in Calif tourney's when it gets down to 2 or 3 handed, the blinds are so high that it is almost like cutting cards for 2 or 3 grand. Most of the time, I make a deal. But I always wish I could have played it out. It just depends on how much you need the money.

generally, i think a 5% is pretty good...thats what i would do..but if i was the op and the staff was acting like that...i would not have cut a deal and i would let the staff know the resason y i am not cutting a deal is to keep them there longer...then i would proceed to tell them the more they frown, the slower im going to play...and they would not get 1 penny from me...they have absaloutly no right acting like that, ticks me off.

Tipping should be up to the individual really, if you were not satisfied with the service they were providing, you could definitely stiff them if you so choose. Personally this is the reason why I dislike casinos so much, they try to suck you dry if you walk through their doors. When your winning and tipping their staff, they love you and will "act" nice and friendly towards you. If you go bust and no longer can afford to gamble anymore, they no longer know you and would like you to leave and stop wasting their time. If your lucky, maybe they'll give you a $5 off voucher for the Buffet Next time.

Pay for USC. I was in your exact same spot last night. I won $2600 in a tournamenr just like yours. When I was faced with the tip I had no clue what to do. I tipped $50. I dont consider myself a cheap person so I didnt know what to do.
