wpt fields decreasing in quality

Recommended Posts

I have been noticing lately, especially in season 4, that many well name pros are skipping the WPT events. This time, a lot of the top name players are playing Poker Superstars III right now instead of playing Foxwoods. In the long term, I think this is going to hurt the growth of Poker because the masses tend to watch the WPT on the travel channel as apposed to Fox Sports Net . If we lose the masses, then Poker will suffer. Any thoughts?

The lack of pros at final tables could also have the opposite effect of what you are stating. Seeing more "Average Joes" at the final table could spark more people's interests thinking they have a shot as well. If I'm not mistaken, Poker Superstars is FSN's highest rated show, so I don't think it's hurting the game too badly that the big names are playing in that. I guess only time will tell though.

I think the large majority of people dont have a clue who the top players are anyway. I can't see this hurting the growth of poker. When you started following poker did you know who all the top pros were just from watching them on TV?

speaking of Poker Superstars III, GOD I HOPE THEY CHANGE THAT BLIND STRUCTURE!!! All-in with any ace was pretty much the only play, all the time, seriously, the quality of poker was H-O-R-R-I-B-L-E....

i agree, at least the WPT shows people playing poker. Superstars, at least the first seasons, had a horrible blind structure. I didnt even enjoy watching it that much. Not only was everyone just forced to gamble because the blinds went up so fast, they only show one Fing hand, and then they go to commercial. In the hour long show, there are only like 10 hands shown, and those ten hands are usually all-ins. There is no strategy, which is what makes poker fun and interesting to watch.

I love the mix of serveral well known superstar players battling out with a couple of cinderella's. I think we are more likely to see a final table with maybe 1 superstar, another known player and 4 unknowns. One thing I don't like about Poker Superstars is the lack of atmosphere. It is such a quiet set with no audience (for obvious reasons). The players seem to be less social and very serious also.
