king of vegas - spike tv

Recommended Posts

I'm going to Atlantic City tomorrow for an audition of sorts. I'm one of the 500 finalists for a reality show/competition being filmed for Spike TV. Basically, I play some fake craps, blackjack, pai gow, caribbean stud and NL texas hold'em tomorrow for two hours and attempt to be a colorful and interesting character suitable for reality TV. I just hope to come off better that Dan Druff at the WSOP Limit HE event.Oh yeah, they'll film the actual show in Vegas in December and it'll be 10 episodes on Spike TV early next year. The winner gets $1,000,000.Anyway, I spoke with some high limit poker players (like Cardplayer's #1 ranked John Phan)- telling them that they should do this - since they are definitely much more likely candidates to be King of Vegas than myself. (I'm the elKang of Vegas and that's about it), and then they kinda told me, hey it's a million dollars - you should really care about it.I only got involved because some friends from network and cable news told me I should do it ("yadda yadda you're a gambler!") - and well I made it to this level because they liked what I wrote on my online application.so, if anyone has heard about this or whatever... there's now a thread on it. I'll post up my experience later tomorrow. The last thing I auditioned for was a Broadway show (as a dancer) like 4 years ago and I made the first call back which was pretty cool - especially since I knew I couldn't take the gig if I got it.

START POSTING IN THE STRAT FORUM
I wish I had time to EVEN read the forum. Or to play more poker. I play like 4 hrs a week. Yes, I suck. Meanwhile, all these other players I know have gone up to 80-160. And I play 10-20 (but mostly just NL) Ugh! Eh... I knew what I was doing when I gave up playing primary to focus on the other side of poker. I have a long term 5-year plan.

elkang is the undisputed king of name dropping.
I cannot deny this.Of course, I don't share the bulk of my experiences in a blog or online. Basically, I won't censor myself too much when I feel it is important to the point I want to make (that they deserve to be on TV to try to be King of Vegas and not me) or if it just comes out in my train of thought.so just like when I argue that when DN posts about his bad beats, it's not really a bad beat story - I argue that my naming people is not name dropping. If it truly annoys people, I can curtail it more.

Gl and be yourself.
thanks. I love the advice.... but, which self is me?seriously, I am a different person in many settings. Each is me, but with a fake environment like reality TV it gets a bit more confusing. Basically, we all have these "scripts" for situations like a first date, meeting a boss, conducting a meeting... but few have great experience with TV auditions.Anyway, they want the Vegas Larry and frankly, I'm not positive that will really come out if I'm not in Vegas and with friends. So, hence comes the acting...I will say that one part of me is always working the system and business process and I expect that to help me during the audition. I also tend to break whatever rules I can to some degree (but not to the point of being disqualified or worse).

You might want to pick up that name you just dropped...... Just kidding GL and be sure to let us know how it goes! When you find out if you got in?
Probably mid-November shortly after the auditions complete on the 9th. I expect to have a pretty good idea at the end of the day tomorrow.

My friend made the top 50 in the Vegas audition, he told me he was the only person to score 100% on the casino test. He also told me that Matusow and Cindy Violette made the final 50 in the Vegas audition. I make no guarantees that this is all true, but it's what he told me, and he's very trustworthy, but he never told me about there being more then 1 audition spot. He said they would let him know if he made the top 16 by November 23rd. Good Luck Elkang, maybe you know the guy I'm talking about? Justin Fisse, 69madman69 on Stars...

Erick Lindgren and Evelyn Ng will be on that show also...
I found out Cyndy Violette and Mike Matusow auditioned too. The last chance is Wednesday in LA - and hope more high level pros do this. It would be a shame for this $1M to go to some shlub - like me.I made it to the final round (3 callbacks) and I'd bet money that I make the show. That's all I can say now - except that there are a lot of donkeys auditioning - a lot of FCPers would have done well - especially those with personality. I'll post a detailed summary for anyone who cares around Thanksgving. However, the taping is now set for 15-20 days and I haven't yet completed hiring the poker news desk for the Dec tourneys.

ah I just posted this - I should read everything before. My source is a producer in the show so it's solid. And the way it was said, it is pretty clear that the pros are going to be in the show. I mean how could they not be? But, EVERYONE has to audition. Which bodes badly for some pros at Foxwoods now.If I see Justin, I'll have a decent non-marquee pro to chat with. My audition was in AC and most people didn't even come dressed up (as requested). About 20 from AC got to the end - so if you got a videotaped interview then you're making it to the final selection.

Looks like your screwed elkang.
Hah. If the levels are going to be as short as I imagine - it's the pros who are screwed. I've negated half of their skill... when they asked me if I was going to win. I said, hell no. I'll need to get very lucky. If God, or fate or karma etc (whatever) gives me the chance to win, I'll do my best. But, seriously, the thing is a crap shoot and I'm not doing it for the money or have any hopes pinned on it. I think I'm an excellent games player though and would rate my chances better than most - but again luck will rule the day here. I'm just concerned about some good tv time and not look like an *******.

Wow ElKang, this sounds like an incredible opportunity that most of us would love to have. Good luck, hope everything goes well, and I'm sure you'll look great on T.V. (as long as you are sporting an FCP hat and T-shirt)!
