lhe: live hand dispute on turn play

Recommended Posts

I was playing 3-6 in a casino sitting next to a friend of mine when he played the following hand:Friend in the BB with K7LAG UTG raises, 3 callers(EP1, MP1, CO), I fold in the SB, friend calls.(10SB, 5 players) Flop 10s 9s 7cFriend checks, LAG bets, EP1 calls, MP1 calls, CO folds, friend calls.(7.5BB, 4 players) Turn 7cFriend checks, LAG checks, EP1 and CO check.River 9dFriend bets, LAG folds, EP1 raises, CO folds, Friend calls.Of course EP1 had a nine (Q9 I believe) but that doesn't matter. My friend is someone that has experience playing LHE, but he's not as good as he thinks he is. I'm significantly better than him, but he doesn't understand what makes me a better player - he mostly thinks I'm just more selective with my starting hands than him.Anyway, I mentioned that he should have bet out on the turn, no question. He disagreed. He expected LAG to bet again, so he could check raise his monster turn card. If the aggressor was the CO, it'd be a different story. Having the aggressor directly on his left made C/Ring a bad play.My explanation (that he didn't buy) was that one of two things happen when he checks, and they both sorta suck. One, LAG bets again, a couple players call with this huge drawing board, he check-raises, and no one will fold to that. Two, LAG checks and it gets checked around.Betting out tends to accomplish one of two things: One, LAG raises and his trips are better protected in this dangerous drawing board. Two, LAG just calls and he gets a bunch of BBs in with the best hand and he'll pray it holds up.My friend doesn't understand which hands aren't strong enough to disguise and slow play. If by betting out on the turn, every single player puts me on the 7, I'm happy. Then fold, bitches! What's your position? Would you argue my play differently? Would you play it differently?

Shorty,I'm playing the flop the same as your friend. I'm looking to trap people for bets here. I'm not too concerned about drawing hands because they aren't going anywhere for the most part anyway. There are more good cards in the deck than bad cards. I really don't care if a gutshot hangs around if I can trap him for two bets here. We will win by the river over 50% of the time. I'm collecting as many bets as I can.

I tihnk your freind should be betting the flop so that LAG will raise and do dirty work for him.It seems so likely that someone would have a 10 or 9, and no one that does is folding to LAG's raise on the flop in this game. Is the idea that even if it doesn't get other players to lay down a better hand, at least the pot will be bigger to draw to two pair or trips?

no, the idea is so that they will fold gut shots and middle pairs.

LAG isn't an idiot, and with all those callers with that flop, and then that turn card that definitely doesn't help him, I only see him continuing with a bet if he has an overpair. At absolute worst, he'd have to have A10 or K10.I know he ended up checking and all, but I still think it's more likely than you think that it could get checked around on the turn, which is a horrible result.I'm not too concerned about drawing hands because they aren't going anywhere for the most part anyway. That's true.

I assume all LAGs are retards.I don't think this turn gets checked through that often. Maybe if the LAG does have some sense, and the callers are passive. In that case it's better to bet.

I think it makes sense to bet out, even if the LAG will is going to bet. If the lag bets, no one folds a 10, 9, or their draws. facing a raise cold, you might knock out some live draws.that's a draw-heavy board and a big pot - i'd be happy to represent my hand in this situation if it means i kick out a couple draws.daniel
