elix powers in portland, or

"Every day this week, come and meet Professional Poker PlayerElix Powers as he will be visiting Barts Place. We will havean autograph party with free bluff magazines on Thursday night"I just thought this was funny. Letter of the law this place is illegal as all hell (they charge you a flat $5 to sit down in a cash game) and widely known, but the cops obviously don't care. It also has a reputation as being full of scam artists as, while you can always find a game, you can always set up your own game with your own deck and your own partners. But back to the point, an autograph session with Elix Powers?

I met Ellix at Canterbury Park during the Fall Poker Classic -- had quite a posse with him, but I was surprised to see him playing in a $225 buy-in event. He seemed like a nice guy anyway...
Yeah, he won't find any buy-ins above $50 at this place, and I think it's mostly .50/1 NL.

Barts is a scummy place, the pots on their tourneys are skimmed horrendously. They charge a 8$ rake on the tourneys per head, then on top of that the guy who runs the tournaments skims the pot. If you go there on any given day of the week you will find the pot short 200-800$. However, there are no people scamming the games, noone brings in their owns decks, or tries to cheat you in the cash games.

I was thinking the other way around -- from WSOP to a little tourney in Minnesota. Oh well, he busted out early anyway

Anecdotal, I guess. I have heard of more than one incident where people have been caught doing a variety of improper things, from minor colluding incidents to marking cards and playing with marked decks, and some minor card mechanics, one group of regulars in particular. As for their tournies, I have heard that occasionally Bart goes so far as to skim all the rebuys in a rebuy tournament. Do you play there often? I know they have gone this long without being busted, but considering how blatantly illegal the whole thing, especially with the write up this summer in Willamette Week, is with my luck the first night I go in is the night someone decides to bust it.

I used to be a regular there, in fact its where I learned to play. I know a lot of the regulars, noone has ever been caught using a marked deck. Dont get me wrong I hate the place, I will probably never go there again. This is due to the small buyins, the large rake, and the skimming. I know many of the regulars, and I know the person who runs the only decent sized cash game there, the HORSE game, and the 2/4 PLO Hi/Lo game, and the guy is honest to a fault. The smaller cash games have no profit in marking the cards, who is gonna mark a deck in a back alley place like barts to win 100$ at a .5/1$ game. Now you will get a laugh out of this. How do you think barts picture got in the Willam week? LOL He signed off on the whole thing because he thinks "its cool." The guy is like a 15 year old trapped in a 40 year olds body. As for it getting busted, I doubt it. They have attorneys, real estate agents, doctors, professors, and even cops going in there. Portland does not really see establishments like barts as a problem, mainly because it isnt. The house doesnt rake the games per hand, the stakes in play are relativly low, and if the cops were to bust it on the largest prize pool day the entire pool would probably 8-9k, hardly worth the manpower. I believe I read at the end of the Willam week article that there have only been a handful of gambling realted arrests in oregon. 1 was for guys gambling at a MAX station, and the rest were similar or related to sports betting.

Sorry to digress, but why not just go to a legit casino? I even googled it, and Bend isnt that far, is it? Forgive me for interupting. bend oregon is over 3 hours away. There is a legal casino 30-40 mins away in La Center, Washington. However, this casino only offers Limit Holdem, it does not offer No limit, with exception to its Saturday tournament. I have played this tourney twice and finished first both times, buying in both times for $210. I pulled 3k, and 2k off the two wins. That said, the blind structure is pretty terrible and it is just an attraction for the casino to get players in.The only decent casino for NL holdem is Spirit Mountain which is about 90 minutes away, and most "normal" people dont wanna spend 3 hours round trip for a little fun after work. For people with normal jobs who want to play NL barts is basically the only option

I used to be a regular there, in fact its where I learned to play. I know a lot of the regulars, noone has ever been caught using a marked deck. This is good to know, again, my information was second hand and purely anecdotal. I still don't like the idea of playing there (never in a tournament), but given that information I may consider heading out there if I'm jonesin and can't find another game. As for it getting busted, I doubt it. They have attorneys, real estate agents, doctors, professors, and even cops going in there. Portland does not really see establishments like barts as a problem, mainly because it isnt. Right, I've heard all of those factors and it does make sense. What really got me about the WW article was their assertion that everything was on the level. Regardless of the level of enforcement, as I mentioned, letter of the law this is entirely illegal. Even selling pop isn't legal, arguably. Do you have a regular game now? I see you're in Beaverton, I'm actually in Aloha, but have been travelling to Clackamas for a regular game when I have the time. I would love to find something regular on the west side of town, but have been out of luck so far.

I played w/ Powers during the fall classic @ Canterbury. I beat him out of a huge pot @ 8/16. He is a very bad player, who was also running bad at the time. At one point he was even playing 4/8. Hes not horrific postflop, but way too loose preflop. In the big hand I beat him in he cold called 2 bets w/ J7s. I had QTs in bb, and the flop came 279 2 spades. I bet pfr calls Powers raises, I three bet, pfr folds. Turn Jh. I bet Powers raises I call. River As. I bet, Powers looks disgusted and raises, I three bet he calls and shows me J7. I played like 8 hours over the week with him and I dont think he had a winning session the whole time.
