whats anyone think about ribbo?

Recommended Posts

He has good ideas/results for middle limit games, but his strategy does not translate well to $1k/$2k levels, where he has little experience.Edit: I should mention that I brought this up (inexperience at higher limits) at 2+2 and Ribbo banned me from his private PLO8 forum thing as a result. So be careful not to offend; he's a touch sensitive.

it's ribbo.comI like the site, he provides some sound math and strategy behind his plays. If you post a hand on two+two you'll probably get a response from him. He plays a pretty aggressive game, and I know he's a winning player in my pokertracker database.

Assuming you really understand it and apply it correctly, Ribbo's advice will earn you the highest or near-highest winrate at those levels, IMO. For sure it will yield a much higher winrate than Smash's suggested style.

From my eperience reading his website, reading his posts, and playing with him online Ribbo plays a gambling style, sort of a PLO/8 version of Doyle Brunson's philosophy for NLHE. He is willing to shove his entire stack anytime he's able to identify his equity as have a slight edge (or even sometimes if he knows he's a dog but his opponent is unlikely to call). This approach generates a lot of fold equity against more conservative players. Conservative players don't want to play for their stack when they're only a slight favorite, so he's able to pick up a lot of small pots against those players that won't gamble. The rest of the time he generally has a small equity advantage, or will have won enough uncontested small pots to make up for the times when he's a dog for all his stack. It's an aggressive style that seems to work very well for him. My database shows him as a huge winner at the small and mid limit PLO/8 games. One other thing that he seems to do well is take advantage of table chat. When he's in the mood, he can needle players very effetively. I once saw him put an entire table on tilt through the chatbox and then proceed to bust every single player at the table.

I once saw him put an entire table on tilt through the chatbox and then proceed to bust every single player at the table. It's very easy to shut him up, yeah I know he likes to chat a lot and most of the time he's berating others' bad plays. I sometimes type something like, "shut up, Ribbo the fish". When a poor player scoop a pot with inferior hands I type "Very nice hand", and when that poor player left, I typed something like "Shut up Ribbo, don't you want to encourage bad plays? you stupid fish"...That can shut him up...I can see Ribbo as a very intelligent person, but I don't think I like him personally. See Mendacious is worshipping him like god (and may wanna give him a blowjob too), but Ribbo exposed Mendacious's PP id just because of Mendacious's one whiny post (and his post meant no harm to Ribbo).

Sheesh, I really need to read this forum I guess. My take on the Ribmeister. As a poster:He writes well. He knows a lot about PLO8 and much of what he writes is very good, and sound. Some of it is great reading and completely worth studying and incorporating into your game. His writing is at time quite insightful. He can also be an overly sensitive egotistical jerk.As a player:He plays for BIG hands, and intimidation value. He is nowhere near as aggressive against players that he respects, and he can make great laydowns. He does put people on tilt, generates great action, and in my opinion is good for any table. He does NOT always apply his own advice to his play. He loves to re-raise drawing hands, especially nut flush draws. I respect his play and consider him to be insightful, but he is a slightly losing player in my database-- though he claims he is a HUGE winner. I see the talent, and often the big stack, but I suspect he exagerates his success-- as everything about him is exagerated. As a person-- I find him entertaining. Colorful, volatile, talented, and full of himself, I wouldn't want my daughter to marry him, but he's great fun at a table, and totally worth reading.
