nicdenoc 0
Daniel said in a recent blog that when he was younger he used to play more snooker than pool.Being a big snooker fan/player myself I was just wondering what your highest break was Daniel? Did you used to be a fan of fellow Canadian Cliff Thorburn?who was the first man to make a televised 147 and won the world championship in 1980.Good to hear that people outside of the UK are fans of Snooker...i thought it was all pool in the US.by the way my highest break is only 20
DanielNegreanu 141
I have met Cliff Thornburn, he used to work at a pool hall near my house. As for my high run, it was 81, but I fluked two balls along the way!
Uriah Heep 0
81, much better than me. 49 is my highest, I cry thinking back to some of the easy balls I've missed trying to break the 50 mark.
murok 0
I have had the pleasure of playing against Cliff many times in the 9 ball world my father used to play against him in Vancouver British Columbia at seymour billiards when he was still a relatively unknown... there was also a two other great canadian snooker players from that era John and Jimmy Bear. John played in England professionaly in the 80's... anyways useless trivia.... but I was also an obsessed pool player that has done well, but there is no money in the game really. so I moved onto poker as many pool players have. floping_quads 0
I most say, I have never heard of snooker before but listening to you talk about it, it sounds like a kindergarden game were you change to rules as you play.

Snooker is a tough game. I am a billiards player myself, my highest is break 108 and then switched to pool. Snooker is big in the UK and there is big money there. As for pool, winning a tournament won't even be enough for a buyin in a major poker tournament. Many pool players have made the switch. Evelyn Ng could easily be the Black Widow in poker if she wanted to I think. It's all about marketing and selling an image. This is where DN is untouched. The guy is smart, he sells his personality very well on TV, people like watching him play. Myself included.
richard_dionysus 0
Stephen Henry is a legend in snooker. From bonny scotland other players to watch out for are ronnie o'sullivan, jimmy white and higgins (forget his first name). These guys are legends.
PocketRocks 0
I mostly play 8-ball and 9-ball, but I used to play alot of snooker, my highest break was 92. I don't know why snooker isn't bigger in the US, but I am glad that is what I started with, because it made me a much better player.
Bohica 0
Snooker doesn't go well here because it takes too long.I played a lot of snooker when I was younger, but the pool hall eventually took out the tables to put in more tables.Snooker is a tough game, and most people don't have the patience or skill for it.On the proprietors side, they prefer 9-ball. Faster game=more games played=more $$.And on TV (when they actually showed pool a lot) it went from pocket billiards, to 9-ball to 7-ball to eventually 5-ball.Faster = more exciting for TV.Look at the way they edit down televised poker. Take out the everyday mundane fold..fold..fold..and just show the biggest pots, biggest bluffs, biggest blow-ups, etc.

They like quicker, trendier versions of our games (pool over snooker, baseball over cricket). I guess the only exception to this rule is American Football. That's a boring, long and more drawn-out version of rugby, with padded protection.

As far as I can remember Steve Henry played the World Series Main Event this year and got put out when his Aces ran into quad deuces.

Played 5 handed. Nothing sweeter. I have seen so many variations of "Golf" in many different pool halls. Some variations really really suck. The best game/rules I have found is in Tulsa OK at the Billard Palace.
guacamole 0
Ronnie O'Sullivan, the world #1 ranked snooker player, has been quoted as saying he is "bored" of snooker, and will be playing some events in the US pool circuit this year. Stephen Hendry has also said he is interested in doing the same, but only if the money is really good (fat chance of that).Snooker is played on a huge table. I don't know about pool, but I always got the impression that the table is a lot smaller. This makes potting distances shorter, bank shots easier, but there are smaller spaces between the balls and more opportunities for a skilled player. I am curious to hear if Daniel made his 81 on a full size snooker table. I have a hard time even stringing a couple of colors together on the big table!

I always liked snooker because it actually took some talent to play, rather than just smacking something into the 9-ball and hoping it went into a pocket.
