Staying out of the DN and God stuff, but one story that I like to explain the religions. (I am Catholic, but do not follow the book completely, I think it is meant as a guide and not a strict word-by-word absolute truth)

It was six men of IndostanTo learning much inclined,Who went to see the Elephant~(Though all of them were blind),That each by observation~Might satisfy his mind. The First approached the Elephant,And happening to fallAgainst his broad and sturdy side, ~ At once began to bawl:"God bless me! but the Elephant ~ Is very like a wall!"The Second, feeling of the tusk, Cried, "Ho! what have we here?So very round and smooth and sharp? ~ To me 'tis mighty clearThis wonder of an Elephant ~ Is very like a spear!"The Third approached the animal,And happening to takeThe squirming trunk within his hands, ~ Thus boldly up and spake:"I see," quoth he, "the Elephant ~ Is very like a snake!"The Fourth reached out an eager hand, And felt about the knee."What most this wondrous beast is like ~ Is mighty plain," quoth her;"'Tis clear enough the Elephant ~ Is very like a tree!"The Fifth who chanced to touch the ear,Said: "E'en the blindest manCan tell what this resembles most; ~ Deny the fact who can,This marvel of an Elephant ~ Is very like a fan!"The Sixth no sooner had begun About the beast to grope, Than, seizing on the swinging tail ~ That fell within his scope,"I see," quoth he, "the Elephant ~ Is very like a rope! And so these men of Indostan Disputed loud and long,Each in his own opinion ~ Exceeding stiff and strong, Though each was partly in the right ~ And all were in the wrong!MoralSo oft in theologic wars,The disputants, I ween,Rail on in utter ignoranceOf what each other mean,And prate about an Elephant Not one of them has seen!-John Godfrey Saxe

What the F-ck is this supposed to mean. Perhaps the most pointless post in this entire thread is either the one im typing now or the one im typing about. I leave the decision to you.

He claims to be a Christian, but do Christians live the poker lifestyle like DN? I have seen him talk about drinking, partying, and we all know he likes to gamble. DN's lifestyle would not be considered "Christian" by anyone with a little knowledge of the Bible. To be a true Christian, you must convey the Christian lifestyle, something which I believe DN is not doing.Discuss, my community college minions.
NOBODY can live their life and not be a hypocrite....EVERYBODY is a hypocrite, and im surprised you haven't realized this yet in life....Some are just bigger and more obvious ones then other-P.

It's a simple analogy about how no faith is totally right. Basically what it is saying is that it is pointless to fight about whos religion is right, because there is no way for anyone to know for sure. God is the elephant, and we humans are the blind men who are unable to see the whole truth. We see bits and parts and make our own opinions of what God is, but no one can see the whole thing. In this way, no religion is totally right, so it's pointless to argue so.I am really surprised at how mean the anti-believers are though in this thread. You equate beleivers to all be morons or brainwashed because of the stereotypes of what a religious person thinks. People who claim to be of a higher inteligence should recognize that no one speaks for everyone, and they should be aware of the limitations of their understanding of existance and not trample on the beliefs of others.

Me and my Master's Degree from a prestigious Catholic College will briefly explain that the orginal poster sadly lacks any real understanding of what constitutes "life" let alone a Christian one. That is all.

Now with the explanation, that story makes more sense.

jesus christ, some of the shit i've read in this thread have made my head spin.are you christians really that closed-minded to believe that you have to be right and everyone else has their one way ticket to hell all booked with expedia DOT COMMMM?seriously, you people are poker players. why not look at the statistical odds that you're right?how many known religions are there? at least a hundred, right? you have better luck chasing that gutshot straight flush draw on the river than you do your belief being right.i'm proud to be agnostic. i don't know what the censored is out there, and i'm thankful for that. i pray to jebus or allah or joe pesci that i'll NEVER know, because i don't want to sound like some bigoted asshole preaching my views if i ever would know the truth.
Ah, the true savior.

Spade- no need to apologize- you are always a true gentleman in every sense of the word- if we ever do hang out, and we probably will at some point considering I live on 51st and Northern and I think you are close by, someday we will hang- you will see that what I ( try ) and represent has nothing to do with the 9/11 type psychos. Or David Koresh, or Jim Jones, or any other religous zealot you can think of.
Holy shiz.My ex gf lived on 51st and northern, exactly, and I am at 51st and thunderbird 4 times out of the week for school.I'm not even 10 miles away for either. We'll meet at some point.
bring a gun
Why, is Spademan dangerous? Or are you implying I should be shot for having some sort of religous outlook/ faith/ belief system? Since I am pretty sure that's the implication, doesn't that make you just as bad as 9-11 type lunatics, except the message that you are sending is kill the believers? See, as passionate and violent as religous zealots can be, I find it interesting that the non- believers are just as bad, except they are not really fighting for anything, rather fighting for nothing.

Pascal the math guy had this wager (not as a means to persuade people) but he said this....if there is a God then I being the christian win and you being the none believer loses. if there is not a God then I lose and you lose. So either way the nonbeliever dies and loses while the christian may or may not lose.
very good quote. i think the only thing i learned in class this semester may apply to people saying we have to prove there is a God. its a reply to something called an argument from ignorance and it basically says: absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.
That's not a quote; that's paraphrasing.Pascal's Wager is very intriguing, especially if you read all the different argument for, and against it.http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/pascal-wager/For anyone that does not want to read through a some grad students paper on the matter, here is the first key paragraph in Pascal's Wager:"God is, or He is not." But to which side shall we incline? Reason can decide nothing here. There is an infinite chaos which separated us. A game is being played at the extremity of this infinite distance where heads or tails will turn up... Which will you choose then? Let us see. Since you must choose, let us see which interests you least. You have two things to lose, the true and the good; and two things to stake, your reason and your will, your knowledge and your happiness; and your nature has two things to shun, error and misery. Your reason is no more shocked in choosing one rather than the other, since you must of necessity choose... But your happiness? Let us weigh the gain and the loss in wagering that God is... If you gain, you gain all; if you lose, you lose nothing. Wager, then, without hesitation that He is.Patrick

Again, a debate about Christianity? When are you kids gonna learn that ANY organized religon is just a mix of folklore and stories passed on from one generation to the next. The funny thing about zealots and believers is the fact they think they have it right. Why is Chritianity the right religon? What if Southpark was true and the Mormons were the the only one's who got it right?Seriously, to questions someone's private beliefs is low class. Like religon, each person is free to determine their level of commitment and their level of belief. Besides, Christianity is completely assbackwards. Wine is a sacred part of the sacrement, but it's unchristian to indulge in wine for pleasure? Whatever. How is gambling bad when churches turn to casino night and bingo (one church in Alabama recently held a charity poker tournament) for fundraisers? The most assbackwards part of Christianity is the differnet factions within it. Catholicism and Baptism are both Christian faiths, yet are vastly differnet in THEIR INTERPRETATION OF THE BIBLE AND GOD'S MESSAGE. That's all the fragmented "religons" are, an offshoot from another branch who disagrees with the other faiths. The Lutheran Sect disagreed with the Protestants, so they formed their own "religon" pushing their values and interpretations on their followers. I could cite many more examples, but why?
Actually, the pure blood of the grape is part of the sacrament- that is not wine my friend. There is pure christianity out there, but you will not find it in mainstream organized religion. Catholics- wrong, and pretty sick at times. Baptist- wrong, and really about as wrong as you can be, in that they manage to screw up the very first steps to becoming a christian, and then make it to where you can do whatever you want all week long, and then do your tear ridden altar call on Sunday and everything is hunky dory- yeah , I am sure that is what Jesus had in mind. " Hey, I am going to set an example of perfection so you can do as you please ith no real reprucussions. " You are right, they are all offshoots of one, so the question is which one? Where did all this start? It started with Christ obviously but what doctrine did he bring? That is where all the fuss comes in- people take it how they see it/ want to see it but in reality the Bible only has one interpetation. If you can read a book, and comprehend what you are reading, you can understand the Bible, and get what it is saying- many peole wouldn't agree with it though, because what it demands of us is taxing, plain and simple. It is meant for everybody- but few will follow. He says that many times.

I'm no theologian, as you'll see immediately, but it seems to me that there is indeed something to be lost by SOME who wager that God is. That loss comes in their time on earth, living as judgmental know it all pricks.

Anyone remember the movie Dogma? It had a great point in it about religion. The bible is a bunch of ideas, written by MAN. These are ideas, not rules, and as long as DN is good to other people and doesn't go on a killing spree. In fact I think the lord forgives all those who ask for forgiveness, thats somewhere in the good book
You should base your knowledge of God on a movie. Yeah, go with that. I'm sure that will work on Judgement Day- " But, Kevin Smith said..."

has nothing to do with whether you will wager for or against God...people are pricks all on thier own...and btw not all christians are judgmental...it usually ends up being the ones who dont know any better that are the ones that judge...just keep that in mind....as for the guy who used the actual quote..thanks..i didnt feel like lookin it up but essentially its what i said.
