disturbed by daniel's blog today

Recommended Posts

Anyone else tired of readingCarpe Diem!like 5 million times in this thread, in big blue letters? It's like burned into my brain now. This sux.
i like it...i know i can just skip the entire post when i notice the blue letters start creeping up...anyways, i think the blog was awesome...reminds me of the time i played a $3 buy-in tournamnet (yes, $3) with some of my younger cousins and their friends...raised nearly every hand, saw every flop...it was a blast...and i ended up getting 2nd, and won a whole $9 :club:

I'm sure everyone had a ball at this game. I know I would have. And no one should ever be ticked off when someone wants to donk off their money. That's the dream. You can win huge (or lose huge). That's why they call it gambling. The best way I ever heard anyone handle a bad beat was Johnny Chan's statement to Hellmuth when Phil hit his two-outer. After a couple of moments of jubilation, Hellmuth had class enough to quietly say, "Sorry, John."Chan's reply should be a model for how we all should take a bad beat:"Hey, you put your money in the middle just like I did."

You really put too much thought into Daniel's life.
Give me a censored break!!This has nothing to do with his life and everything to do with Poker and the behavior of pro's and the overall image and good of the game.Nothing positive can come from what Daniel did. Now if there is somethign more or missing from the story then I would love to hear it.
How was I being vindictive here?

Let's end this thread. If those players aren't willing to lose all the money they bought in for, they shouldn't be playing NL holdem. They could have left at any point. They chose to stay. Thus, they were putting their money on the line, just like they were before DN sat down with them. When DN sat down, he wanted to do two things: 1) win money, and 2) have fun. He won money be playing within the rules of NL holdem, and he had fun. What else is there to it?? When I sit down (click down..I guess..) at my 1/2 stud table, I try and do everything within my power to completely outplay and outclass my opponents, thereby taking their money. I don't care about their feelings, or how much money they have, or ANY OTHER SINGLE FACTOR. When I play poker, I try and outplay my opponents. When DN played, he tried to outplay his opponents. And in the process, we both have fun doing so. That is poker. Poker. Poker. Not Bingo. Poker. Poker.DIE, THREAD, DIE......

Like the saying goes....if you can't take the heat...get your ass out of the kitchen....if you can't afford to lose, then you shouldn't be at a NL table.

Ok, I tried in vane to read all the post in this topic to make sure that my comments haven't been posted yet, but I stopped after everyone started ripping on majorleag and got off topic.I play full time at the Wynn. It was my big misfortune to be playing at the Bellagio instead of the Wynn when Danial was there last night.Someone posted earlier that if some unknown person sat down with that much money everone woudl be talking about how juicy the game is/was. That's very true.My first week at teh Wynn someone sat down with $30k at the 1/3 NL table. There was a list a mile long to get into the game. Also someone said somethign about movign tables. Do you know how EASY that is? VERY! You ask the floor to move you to another table when a seat opens up. There were 2 other tables going, it wouldn't have taken too long. Also, it's VEGAS! Do you know how many other games there are in this town? Go to a different casino for a different game if you aren't happy with the situation. We always talk about how to make our game better. well, in different situations, there is a need for different strategies. If the table was super tight before he got there and you played super loose, well when Daniel sat down, you obviously needed to change strategies and play super tight. Or leave, maybe that would have been the best strategy.I'm not sure what all the fuss is about. no one made those players stay there at the game. mcwww.mikecunningham.blogspot.com

okay, you guys are nuts. I kinda skipped ahead to the end, because I don't care to read all of this. The image of poker. What could be BETTER for the image of poker, than a rich guy, raising in the dark, and raising on q3, raising on every hand. Who WOULDN"T want to play in a game like that. I would lick My chops. Listen, I'm not a DN Fan boy, I don't really care about his personal life, and I only read that blog entry 'cause of this thread. But, if you think " that's the wrong image for poker" you've got the wrong censored game, man. Dn it a fun loving, jokester, who gives lots of action. What MORE could you want in a player? It sounded liek this was teh biggest game at teh Wynn that night, too. Where else was the ambastor of the Wynn to play? If the people at the table didn't like it, they could leave. But it sounds like they loved it, as would anyone who likes poker. The people who nit pick at DN's life are just freaking pathetic. Telling him what he should, and shouldn't do, as if they are the moral voice of poker, and that DN just doesn't know. What do you know a bout the "image" of poker? What have you done to improve it, to bring it to the people? YOu have a poker site you endourse? You have a video game you're brining out? Are you a marketable TV star, who helped make poker popular with every 21 year old with a little cash?Man, how freaking ludicris.. "It's just not fair, the big bully pro's beating up on the pro little guys. " give me a break. I'm sure the guy with pocket queens hated DN at his table.
Exactly. I can only sympathize with the guy who has 10-20K and gets outdrawn. That's the name of the game.Like BigD said, when playing that limit (within your B/R) how could you dare complain about this?!

First of all, I have great respect for the OP and all FCP'ers who've managed to debate this topic without resorting to dropping censor'd bombs all over their posts. The ones who couldn't can go censor'd censor'd a censor'd censor'd censor'd!! I've read (most) of the thread and the only real issue I see is the size of the stack for buy-in. Sure, by the rules there was no max buy in but from reading the journal it reminded me of the time the pros refused to play mr bazilliongazillionaire for super high stakes. <insert random flames restating anyone can leave>True... but thought I'd give you all another chanceAs for it being temporarily +EV to sit in there, fine. But unless you manage to trap or be fortunate enough to have position on DN for a majority of the hands getting tested for all your chips on random flops would get tiring after a while and could turn out ugly if you ran into enough coinflips. As for all the genii (virus-virii, genius-genii??) that suggested sitting back and waiting for stone cold nuts for the guaranteed double up, best of luck setting those traps against someone like DN and the sick reads he can put down on people. (btw DN, just watched the borgata and it looked like you needed to trust those reads a bit more instead of paying to confirm on the spot)Again, just random thoughts based on the information I've read. Then again it would be all worth it for a chance to sit down and see DN play goofball for a session and continuously fold... or maybe I'd play back at him in the dark...

I just can't get over the No limit buy in rule... it's ridiculous! A lot of you state that this would be a great game, don't play over your bankroll, etc. That is only true if your more of a gambler than a player. And yes, a lot of crazy gamblers come into 1/2 games, etc. and lose a few G, thats not the same as a buy in 50x more than the average. (Ever seen someone pulling out 10 grand when everyone has $100? ...didn't think so)I play 2/5 usually, with a $500 max buy in. (Or the highest stack at the table.) Now, if someone would sit down with $50000 and puts us basically all in every hand, WHERE DOES THE PLAY GO? Yes, we all like to make money but I don't want to put my entire buy in on the line EVERY TIME. I basically would have to wait for a 3/2 shot or better and hope... then what? I will lose the 3rd coinflip or the 4th or the 5th and I'm broke. Not the way I like to play poker... Sounds more like craps to me... Lots of fun at the craps table, too and sure nothing wrong with it...I'm just not that much of a gambler, I guess...

Well said. That was always my point. It is not poker at that point it is strictly gambling which is fine if that is what you expect, but if you sit down to play poker and have any kind of game at all you don't want to gamble.

First post. I am certain that Daniel is one of the best poker players in the world. From what I have seen here and from what I have seen on TV it would be an honor to play poker with Daniel. I imagine it would be very fun and also educational. Daniel's intention when he played that table was to have fun and play as many pots as he could to make the best use of his time. It was entertainment and having a good time. I am sure he didn't mean to take advantage of these players. If Daniel chooses to buy in for that amount of money, adjust your style of play. Poker is a game of patience. Take advantage of his style of play and be aware of your position at the table. I think it would be good for poker if more name pro players came down and played the lower limits every now and then. I think that if Daniel did that for example, like once a month, that would be very educational for us here. I think a lot of us would like to hear about Daniel buying into a 10/20 game for $1000, a 4/8 game for $400, or a 2/5 nl for $2000. Maybe, a $20 sng or lets say a $30 multi-table tournament. Daniel doesn't have to do those things. He has already been there and done that. It would be the poker story of all-time if the next time I am in Vegas and Daniel sits down at the 4/8 game I would be playing in at Wynn's. I will be playing it like 4/8 for me, maybe, Daniel can imagine it like it was 4K/8K. I gaurantee that if I lose I wouldn't be upset. I might have to pay for a priceless poker lesson, but it would be worth it.

yeah, it's just like craps, because in craps, you can wait until you're 80/20 to bet all the money you have

Give me one big time poker pro that would be willing to come to Ohio State University (other than DN) and meet and greet every student at the event, be genuinely nice to all of us, answer everyone's questions, play poker with all of us donks, all for a slight benefit to the Habitat for Humanity. Then i might agree with you. DN is by far the most gracious and unpretentious big time pro out there. Period. Ive met him and talked to him at Bellagio one time after he got done playing three handed with Ivey and Gus and you would never know he was a professional by just talking to him. I dont think him playing at 5 10 and splashing around warrants this post.

I would post on this in a serious manner. First for poker playing to be of any value it has to logical, and this mentioned great player is only proving this; because alass he is lossing and to be lossing you would tend to go on a kind of tilted emotional reaction. Just as the author above was steamed about no money, as for the Wynn that is no poor mans haven and the limits ther only reflect the public skill average not the neededs of the players. I play in agame that has 1,2,2,4 blinds and only a 100d buyin but millionaires play in it also, they know how bad they are. Also casinos I have learned shun the NoLimit play because thier rake is lower, players bust and never return. It could have been positive; how many players at that table even recognized him? I think what you are saying holds very true for the general populus of playing people but you should know that the big time pros like Daniel have to "think outside the box" to solve the much more weighty problems of the WPT or 10,000 dollar buyins, no doubt also you overplus his finacial postion, his accounts show him down at times, and could you honestly wager thata player with those antics is stable maybe he will retire and sell real estate?

i dont see anything wrong with what he did, if i was at that table, i wouldve been thrilled that there is som1 wlling to throw that kind of money around....but, on the same note, i dont understand how Daniel can call that "training"...i dont see how that session will help him in the WPT event.

Dude! You're kidding me! I have a .25-.50 game going on at a friends house tonight. If DN wants to show up with 125k and go around betting 10k with Q3 off, i'd welcome him. When I read the blog, my first thought was: "Wow, what a generous guy"I mean, seriously, a player capable of adjusting to a maniac could have made a killing last night.
