To introduce them to books with ideas, "Johnny get your gun", an amazing anti war book, about a guy in world war one, who woke up a stump. No eyes, no nose, no voice, no ears, no legs, no arms. The book starts with him gaining conciouness, then slowly realizing what happened to him, and his condition. Horrifiying, made an early impression on me at an early age that I didn't ever want to go to war.
Or watch the video for Metallica's "One" if you're lazy. Vonnegut is excellent. Cat's Cradle definitely makes my top 10.

vonnegut is the man. i got meet him, and that was one of the best moments of my life. he is a really engaging person to talk to. Out of his works I like Cat's Cradle first, Sirens of Titan second, and Breakfast of Champions third.

How about Ender's Game? For the kids.
Ah...good book. Same with Ender's Shadow, which is the same story essentially, but from the perspective of a different character. The movie of Ender's Game is coming out next year, I think. It's from the same director as Troy. If he can butcher that text so horribly, I can't imagine what he's going to do to this film.

Love Vonnegut, proably my favorite auther, next to David Foster Wallace. Clockwork is sold. Wolfe's fiction is terrible, so over rated. His non fiction is amazing, though. Bonfire and Man in Full suck, IMO. Godfather was a big disappoint me to me, it was such a "pulp" novel, if you know what I mean. Orwell, of course, is a genious. To Kill a mockingbird is another good one, but again, I feel like it's a great book to introduce a teenager to ideas, like animal farm, but not one of my favorites. Catcher in the rye, of course, is brillant. It's been ripped off so much. One flew over at one point was in my top five, still in my top ten or so. great, great book. does things the movies just can't capture. I haven't read All quiet, so no comment.
No doubt, Vonnegut rocks...Cat's Cradle is my personal favorite, though there are 4 or 5 books I like above the others. I dunno, I am a big fan of Bonfire of the Vanities. No matter what anyone else thinks, I thought it was a well-written novel. Tom Wolfe is high on my list of favorite authors. I know what you mean about Godfather. I took a class in college called "American Bestsellers and Their Films", where we spent 4 or 5 weeks dissecting The Godfather. I really had a new appreciation for the novel after that.....every time I read To Kill a Mockingbird, I remember putting it down and saying "that was a really good book", hence its entry onto my list. I haven't read it in at least 5-6 years, but it was a favorite of mine from way back, so I had to include it.One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is an incredible book. Kesey was amazing. Everyone should read Catcher in the Rye. Animal Farm and 1984 will always be in my top 5. All Quiet on the Western Front is a good quick read if you are looking for something new.

For Whom the Bell Tolls is an incredible book. Have you read The Sun Also Rises? Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour: an Introduction by Salinger definitely makes my top ten. Maybe the best book I've ever read.
