limping in with kk

Recommended Posts

I hate when i try to play strategically and limp in with KK or AA from early position and get busted. IE: limp with KK from early, 5 guys call. flop comes queen jack 3 rainbow. guy in 1st checks i bet , another guy calls, another folds another calls. Then a fold. nex card is 8 . I bet guy folds, another goes all in with more than me, i call, he had 9-10 had a straight., Tough to lay off a hand like that, but wahtever thats poker.

if your playing with very aggressive players, yes you do limp with KK or AA, hopeing for a raise in later positions. never with ak or aq tho
You want to raise in later positions after someone who stayed in the hand has already hit their draw or is so close to it that they would have pot odds to call you when you raise later?

when i do play aq, which is getting easier to lay down for me, i never raise unless i'm button or cutoff. such a fragile hand.

Don't limp with AA or KK or QQ
I wouldn't go that far as to say don't do it. Poker is a lot about risk/reward. The rewards of limping with AA or KK can be great. However, it is soooo dependent upon the table as to whether it is a good play. If you have a ton of guys who are willing to limp in with a wide majority of hands, then it's not a good idea. One of those hands has a decent shot of hitting something and busting you. Remember, KK is just one pair. If I'm at a table that has a high percentage of preflop raisers, I'll limp from early with a monster and look to get paid. Most of the time, I'll come back over the top of them and just try to win it right there. If they call, oh well, you're probably in the lead anyway. I wouldn't make a habit out of this play, but in a tourney, it can definitely be an easy way to double up and make the other guy wonder what hit him.

Im sorry man but i just disagree with you. You definilty need to raise around 75% of the time with QQ KK AA, but that other 25% when ur in early position you want to limp, hoping for a raise. Sometimes as i first posted, it doesn't work out in your favor, but the other times your going to get paid off very well. Example: i was playin a 5-10 F/k game limped with AA there was raise after me. I just flat called. Ended up hitting trips and winnin close to 300 on the hand. You are going to trap your opponents if they raise the blind. You can call, thus not giving away your hand, or reraise confusing them. I just think its a much better play to not always raise with your high pockets from early position. Let someone else bluff at it and catch them.[/u]

I guess you need to have aces or kings busted a few more times before you realize that limping in with aces or kings is a disaster...yah you might catch a big pot...but considering how horrible they are as drawing hands i wouldnt take the risk

Ok, heres the thing, I would never advise you to limp in w/ KK if you can't lay it down to a board showing 8JQ. Obviously he has the straight. It can be very valuable to limp in early in a tournament where picking up the blinds is not even worth it. BUT, this is a big but, you must be able to lay it down if someone makes a very strong bet. I can't tell you how many people I've busted from doing exactly what it is you did. My recommendation is to make a bet that is worth it to you to win, and go all in after the flop w/ out any scare flops. Tough to lay down, but if you can consistenly lay it down, it can definitely be very profitable early on in tourneys.

Don't limp with AA or KK or QQ
In an early position in a cash Ring game limping is not a terrible play, its very rare that it will go all the way round without being raised, and even if everyone does limp, you have only invested the bb and can lay your aces down if it seems like you have been outflopped.

I have mixed ideas on this. I think it's ok once in a very long while to limp with high pocket pairs in early position, IF you've been playing at the table a bit to know that the pot WILL be raised preflop. I think it's something you shouldn't do very often, but is something you should do every once and a while (depending on who you're playing) to mix up your game a bit. The only problem with that is, nowdays if an early limper, re-raises my raise, I will usually put him on a BIG hand... so I find that it's kind of hard to get the action you want sometimes.

There is no reason, in a limit game, to limp in EP with AA or KK. No reason. If its a crazy game and the pot is getting raised everytime, even 3 bet, there still is no reason. If you raise early with AA in a crazy game, you still will probably get 3 bet. There are little advantages, and many disadvantages. AA and KK come around few too many times to tryin to be "deceptive" with them. Play them straight forward always, especially in online poker. No limit is different. There are times when you can do this, but even in NL its still a rare occurance.

I'm glad you got busted playing kings like that, congratulations, at least after being an idiot and limping go all in on a flop like that, draws won't call you and really the only hand that will call you is top pair

Don't limp with high pocket pairs.
If you are talking about limit I'd agree with you, however, if you are talking about No Limit you are very wrong. If you always do one thing in poker you are too easy to predict and people can narrow your play down. For instance, if you always raise with big pairs from EP then when you raise from EP any smart person will be able to deduce that you have a big hand. However, if you mix it up and limp sometimes it will go a long way in disguising your play. In poker, likewise in life, risk vs reward needs to be assessed. The risk for limping in EP with AA or KK is imaginary. If you are incapable of laying down a big hand when there are 7 callers then you need to work on your game. Laying down big hands will save you more money in this game then almost any other skill save good reading skills. However, the reward for this play can be great. For instance, if you limp and there is a raise and 1 or multiple callers this play is invaluable. You can then drop the hammer and re-raise. This play will win you an inordinate amount of money especially in deep stacked games. Of course, you shouldn't do this every time you get a big PP in EP, but it is something you should definitely consider. Since there is no stipulation that just because you have AA or KK you should always win nor is there a stipulation that because you have AA or KK you can not lay your hand down when you are beat the risks are non-existant as opposed to huge potential rewards for this play. Not only are you setting yourself up for making more money in a pot, but you are also mixing up your play to keep opponents guessing.

although im not a big fan of limping in with high pocket pairs, I will do it once in a while to mix things up. It can be profitable sometimes if your playing at a particularly aggressive table. If your certain there will be a raise, then limpin is a good play, because you can 3-bet or cap with KK, AA before the flop, that's a lot of bets in before the flop with a very good hand, which is what you want. However if your playing at a loose weak table, you HAVE to raise pocket pairs unless you like getting sucked out on. Most of the time, I don't fool around too much though and just raise in early position.

??? well if you think its the right play then why did you make a post about how it isn't working?

when you limp you are BEGGING to be beat, i do not care your position. when you raise you will get fewer callers/limpers (in theory) and you have done all you can to chase out those terrible hands that can be turned into monsters.

If you are playing in a game that has enough money on the table and no river rats as we call them you raise max amount. If you are playing with a crowd that calls everything hoping to beat you on the river then limp in if you miss the flop fold. I play with some guys who play over 75% of the hands in a game. You dont play your cards pre flop in that situation you play the fact that they are going to call everything. When they get on the short stack they get respectful then its my job to take their chips. So we can sit here all day and argue but Im a believer in play your opponets for how they play and who they are and not about your AA KK QQ or 22. Herb
