record keeping

Recommended Posts

Hi all,Over the past couple of months I've been playing with ever increasing frequency. Initially I was playing in one or two homegames a week accompanied by trips to the casino poker rooms about once month. For the past two months or so I've been playing between 3 and 5 home games per week along with trips to the casino about 2-3 times per month. So I decided it was well past time for me to start keeping records of my sessions so I can get a better grasp on how I'm actually doing. So I created a handy dandy little spread sheet with these column headings:Date-obviousGamep-Blind structure, tourney, or ring game etc.location-home game, casino etcbuy-in-total of buy-inscash-out-chips i remove from table, duhhours-time at the game, again duhmisc. esp-money spent on gas to get to casino (50 miles away) etcProfit/loss-money made or lost strictly at tableP/L per hour-pretty self explanatoryNet P/L-Profit/Loss after misc. expensesBank-my current bankroll totalNote-was game short handed etcSo basically, if there's anything you feel I should add or remove from my records I'd appreciate the feedback.

I made a spreadsheet to keep track of all different types of games, limits, etc. and all kinds of different ways of calculating profits. Took me about 10 hours. It involves 9 different sheets. Some of the formulas are five full lines of text. But I never use it now.

There is really only one thing I would say you should add. This doesn't really pertain to casino games but for your weekly home games I would keep notes on key players. Reading over these notes briefly before going to a game can help refresh your memory on betting patterns, how they play certain hands, etc. Definately a +EV practice if you have the discipline to continue to update the profiles.

Yeah I looked at it, but I wanted something that I could customize a bit more should I feel the need to do so. But thanks anyhoo.

Not a bad idea, dunno if I'm gonna put that on a spreadsheet so much because the format doesn't lend itself so well to extensive notes, but maybe start a player dbase, especially for online players. And since I see a lot of the same faces when I go to casino I'll probably include them as well. Thanks for the tip.

I remember reading an old cardplayer article by Mike Sexton. He kept a record of every hand he played for one year --he noted his position, his hole cards, money spent or won on the hand. I tried this for 5 sessions, about 40 hours and was able to identify a few leaks in my game. You'll get asked by the a few players what you're doing--I usually replied that I was keeping a record of every time I got rivered or check raised. That seemed to satisfy their curiosity.

Crackuser, are you using excel? If so and you are not familiar with pivot tables, validation tables, and if-then statements do a little reading up on them. You can keep one master worksheet and the 2nd can be all of your tables. A couple of clicks to refresh the tables and you can subtotal any information you need. I only passed computer 102 and excel 103 so if you are good with puters you should be able to get a good grasp on these in one days' reading time.

It's easy to be flippant or sacastic but it's not always appropriate. Hank asked a question, I answered in earnest and my reply has become the object of your ridicule. It's disrespectful.

Ya know gar it's funny you mention that...I was just toying with a similar idea for the same reason. Thanks for the input.

I haven't used pokertracker--how would you use it in home games and at the casino, I thought it was only applicable to online poker.
There's a new pokertracker bot that YOu can bring to live games. It's modeled after the head of Phil Ivey (but smaller) and You just use it as a card protector.

I know that pokertracker is an online poker tool and not applicable to live games, I was being diplomatic. The discussion was about record keeping for HOME GAMES AND CASINOS, so when econ_tim made his remark about pokertracker, I didn't want to berate/belittle him for missing this salient point. I tried to make this point by asking if pokertracker was applicable to home games--letting him make the discovery by himself. I didn't want to embarrass the poster or discourage him from posting in the future. But if it makes you feel superior and better by mocking others.....

dim...348 posts...347 are probably just attempts to flame and the other one is probably just a futile attempt to form a coherent, logical thought. In summation, dim if you can't provide anything useful to my post please just move along.
