TheCinciKid 0
Moneymaker didn't expect to win anything at the WSOP and was deeply in debt, so he took money from friends and his dad in exchane for a cut of his winnings. After that and taxes, he certainly didn't take home 2.5M. However, he does have his endorsement money and unlike many of the jealous posters on htis board I'm pretty sure he's not a terrible player. He may have a hard time beating some of the better players at some of the higher limits, but I'm sure that he's still capable of making money from playing poker, especially with all the jealous donkeys out there who think they are better than him. DPRCEO2003 0
this has to come true soon........2.5 - taxes = 1.5, 1.5-50% to backer = 750,000, 750,000 - 50% to wife for divorce = 375,000 , 375,000 - being a bad player = 0Wow, this post is so telling and helps me understand. BS! Why be jealous of a world champion ? Give the man some credit and respect. At least Poker Stars endorses him. Probably little that you can say about your stellar poker career. Horrible post Cred. ahrustad 0
I would guess his attorney job would net him 75K before taxes. If he is making more than that endorsing for pokerstars then that is awesome and good for him.http://swz.salary.com/salarywizard/layouth...RD14000087.htmlDon't insult my field with 75k.He wasn't an attorney--he was an accountant. DB10-2 0
as a middle aged patent attorney somewhere like stamford, which is basically an extension of manhattan in the business world, he would have made close to or at manhattan salaries. i'm guessing it was around $190K if not better. patent attorneys make more than regular attornies, as a general rule. If you do that is great and I am happy for you. Was raymer a biotech patent lawyer? If he was I apologize. But if he wasnt then I stand by my previous post. And if you think I am insulting you by saying you only make 75K a year....well, um, sorry??

I will trust you though.Mea culpa. Most attorney's of any kind work on billable hours and while I don't know what every attorney makes, they make pretty good dough.I have consulted with both Patent and Trademark attorney's and I can tell you that even for a Junior partner, low on the totem pole you will pay $250-$300 per hour.I think Raymer would have had to be making 6 figures easy. Just my opinion.
PokerFan 0
Rayem was a patent attorney for Pfizer, the pill company, I'd guess his salary in the 110K-135K range
rjohnny4321 0
It's amazing how many people tell stories when they have very little clue what really happened. The story has been told in print before, even though I can't remember the magazine.Moneymaker was broke, very, very deep in credit card debt. He wanted to sell the $10,000 seat that he won to help pay off some of his debt, but obviously that wasn't an option. He got $2000. from his dad and brother in law each and in return gave them each 20% of his action in the main event. Therefore, they each got 500 g's and Moneymaker made 1.5 mil. minus taxes of course.Let's remember that Moneymaker had NEVER played in a live tournament. What he accomplished is simply amazing. If you were thousands of dollars in debt, begged for 4 grand to go to Vegas because you had no money, and took a week off work, all to go play in a poker tournament against the best in the world, one in which you had virtually no shot of winning (or even cashing), how do you think your mindset would be? When I was young I played poker when I was close to broke and NEEDED to win....never happened. The way you think when you NEED to win is very -EV if you know what I mean..... I think a lot of us forget about the other perspective at times. Is he a great poker player? Probably not... and luck was definitely on his side that night, but he did do something that was amazing. He's ignited the dream for many casual players, and for that you gotta give him some credit.
rjohnny4321 0
Not to mention the opportunity he has given to many long time players. 5 years ago the word "poker room" was becoming a rarity in a Vegas casino, now it's a necessity.Obviously Moneymaker will not go down as a great player, and I'm 100% sure he would agree with most people that he far from being one of the elite of the game.If anything the guy seems awful humble if you ask me.
