trade proposal cause i just fell & hit my head

Recommended Posts

This is a potential trade proposal I manufactured out of thin air. It has absolutley no credibility that I know of and, being a Montreal Canadiens fan, I'm not sure whether I like it or not. I just thought I'd throw it out there for discussion. To EdmontonMichael RyderTo FloridaJose TheodoreRyan SmythTo MontrealRoberto LuongoJay BoeuwmeesterAll these players (except Luongo) are unsigned restricted free agents. Whaddya think?

Yeah, there's no way they could give up Ryan Smyth for only Michael Ryder in return. They would be getting flat out shafted on this deal. If the Canadiens gave up Sheldon Souray, it could get interesting, but they'll never do that.

Getting Luongo out of Florida right now might not be that hard. However, you'd probably need an assault weapon to get Bouwmeester in the same deal. Maybe Smyth and a prospect other than Ales Hemsky (Jani Rita, maybe) for Luongo, though Oiler fans would likely burn down the arena. Still, Luongo's a franchise goalie and worth it.Florida's not going to get a top goalie for Luongo because they can't pay a top goalie. If they could, they'd keep Luongo. Maybe a back up that can play like Boucher in a three way deal. And don't underestimate Michael Ryder. I don't think he was a flash in the pan (not worth Ryan Smyth right now, but still, a very valuable talent).

Florida did offer Luongo a 5 yr $25 million contract so I think they can afford a top goalie. As for Bouwmeester, he is apparently asking for an amount that the Panthers Organization thinks is ridiculous. Ryder is a player in the mold of Ryan Smyth only younger with a much bigger upside. I don't think this trade is a farfetched as it first appears.

I don't know if his upside is much bigger. Not big enough to trade the heart of your franchise. The last few years, Smyth has set the tone for the Oilers entire offence.

Why would Florida trade a better goalie who makes less money than the one they'd be getting in return? Why would they trade Boumeester who's a young stud on defence for another forward?

Because both these players are asking for hefty pay raises that Florida doesn't seem to think is warranted.

Amazing that this would even be considered. But Theodore had that much trade value?

Three years removed from winning the Hart and Vezina trophies in the same year...yeah, he was a valuable asset.

Ryder was way overvalued in this, I think. I assume he was coming off his 30 goal season?
Actually this was posted the season before he went back-to-back 30 goals. His rookie season was 25G and 63 pts. Those are Calder numbers most years, including this year...he was nominated but lost out to Raycroft...lol. So figure trying to build a trade around Skinner or Grabner this offseason, that's the mentality behind valuing Ryder back then.
