comfortable with cash games

Recommended Posts

After nine months of dicking around in stt and small mtt, winning with tournament strategy and little poker skills, i can finally stop this nonsense because i have finally figured out how to be consistent winner in limit cash games. I was just wondering, how long did it take some of y'all before you were proficient in cash games. Am I some kind of mental deficient because it took me this long? This is a flame free thread. I'm obviously not bragging, if anything i am putting myself down, so nobody here needs to bring me down a peg or two. Thanks tons,Chicago

I was in the same boat as you, profitable in SNG's and MTT's, and trying to bust into ring games. I thought, since most of my experience was in NL, that NL would be the best game for me, but I was wrong. I quickly realized that playing limit was much more profitable. It was probably a month before I was completely comfortable playing ring games. Now a play a mix of SNGs and ring limit, and have been able to maintain solid, but not spectacular, results.

I started with limit HE ring games. I opened an account at UB and started with play money. After playing for about 2 weeks, it was clear that I was significantly better than my average opponent at that level (I got 1000 starting chips up to 4000). I then proceeded to 0.25/050, 0.50/1.00, 1/2 and now I'm at 2/4 and 3/6.I've been a winning player all this time, though my win rate has improved as I've gained experience.

I've been playing limit ring games for just over a year now at the local B&M, usually just once a week on Saturdays from 5:30am (when the Friday night drunk college kids are still there chasing their money.) till about 3 or 4 in the afternoon (when the retiree rocks are there playing their predictable game.).Like dank, I've been a pretty consistant winner, according to my records. I'm at about a 75% winning session rate, and if I'm having a bad session, I try not to strart chasing my money. Sometimes though.....lolI'm averaging about 1.7 BB/hour after about 600 hours of play at 2/4 playing pretty much ABC poker, with a few moves thrown in here and there for good measure, as I've gotten more confident in my play from reading books, and the help of the FCP Army posters!

it took me about 6 months to learn winning strategy, another 6 months to figure out how to implement it consistently and another year to figure out bankroll management. I think the limit learning curve has 3 stages: learning how to play the cards, learning how to avoid deviating from the playing of the cards that you know is correct, and learning how to play the man.

That's a damn good idea. I like that approach.

With two major colleges within 15 minutes of the casino, the weekends are always fun, loose, and profitably full of kids spending their tuition money. I've talked to some that will play straight through from Friday to Sunday. Quite sad really.

I have one major university (Southern Illinois University) and 2 junior colleges within 15 minutes of me, but my problem is that the nearest casino is 50 minutes south so they have to travel a little ways to play them. I'd be better off hitting up the home games in Carbondale, IL or take the 90 minute trek to St. Louis and take down all the college kids up there.
