quick, easy omaha 8/b question

Recommended Posts

just playing a little omaha 8/b .5/1 limit on party. normally semi-loose table. first hand in about a month, i post and find 3 jacks in my hand and sure enough, a jack high flop. end up having to get lucky by splitting with a guy who had the nut uncounterfeitable low and 11 outs to scoop me, even though i 'flopped quads' at first glance.anyways, the question is just if these hands are playable.2 off the button, one limper, with8910Q double-suitednext hand is 3rd position, one limper again with A45J and the ace is suited. i remember reading from an unreputable source that these two types of hands are playable. just wondering if those are playable hands.thanks, daniel

Threre really aren't many playable O8 hands with 8's or 9's in them. 8's and 9's are pretty fucking usless in O8 because they're almost never involved in a nut high and obvioulsy the winning low will rarely contain an 8.Play hands that have good scooping chances. Good strong high only hands are fine, (TJQK preferrably 2 suited, AAKK, KKQQ, etc.) but otherwise you should be looking for hands that make wheels (A234, A235, etc.) (preferably with redraws) or have high/low potential. A45j one suit is marginally playable with three to a wheel an a suited ace, and the JA combination will make an occasional usefull straught/draw.That being said I might fold it out of position, depends how loose the game is. You really need a lot of things to go well to scoop with it.Good luck.

The suited wrap hand is a trap--you end up paying off higher straits/flushs when it hits--even though a that limit a lot of the idiots seem to win (for awhile) with that crap. I partly disagree on the suited A45J hand in that it depends at lot on the number of players. Also depends on the texture of the game--you certainly don't want to get into capping situations. In a higher limit short game the hand actually can be played for a raise, but that's not the limit or skill level you referred to.

I would only talk about A45J with Ace suited in detail (Fold the damn JJJX, for 89TJ you need to hope for a good flop or else it's an easy muck).I would definitely play A45J at PLO8 $200 or above.Early Position, I would limp. If some solid players pot raise me from behind, I would fold if I am the only one to call. I would call if there's enough callers (giving me enough odds to call).Middle position, I would play like what I do in EP. If some poor players limp in ahead of me, I would raise occasionally.LP. I would limp if there are solid players limp before me because this is not a raising hand against them. If solid players who play well postflop are on SB or BB, I would raise too to drive them out. If poor players limp I would raise, if they pot raise I would fold, other than that I would call.A45J is somewhat a marginal hand, it's player dependent hand. So when I play it I want to make it a favaorable environment for me to invest in this hand.

thanks for the thoughts guys. i figured the wrap hand was not playable since most of the best hands it can make include a low - although in a regular omaha game i'd likely play it.i figured the suited ace with three wheel cards was playable, but in this level of omaha 8/b i don't mind only taking large advantages preflop and will accept missing out on some small ones if it means missing out on some disadvantages as well, since i deem my skill to still be quite low in that game.thanks again.daniel

PLO, the wrap double suited hand 2 off the button is a raising hand. O/8, fold it.EDIT: read the responses, folding my tent. Everything that needs to be said has been said.

I think that the argument of 89TQ ds is not playable at PLO8 is not valid.Ok, in limit O8 it's much less playable and I would consider more foldings, but not in PLO8.What's the point of playing pot limit? You can afford to play some marginal hands cheaply preflop and if once it hits the flop and you know your opponent couldn't let go off his preflop huge hand post-flop, then you have a great implied odds. For example, in PL holdem, you can afford to play small suited connectors but not in NL if there aren't enough callers. If the flop misses you, you lose about 3X to 4X of BB (raised by your opponents), but if it fits you, you can make a much much bigger returns. Losing 3X-4X of BB is no big deal if you know your opponent playing badly postflop in pot limit games (Think about this in no-limit, someone might choose to go all-in preflop with their JJ, that makes your say 78s very unplayable). Some straightforward players always pot it if they have some hands like AA2X ds preflop and they will pot it every street no matter what. If I am against those players, I would definitely call them preflop, I at most lose from $7 to less than $20 to them preflop, but I am looking forward to taking their entire stack postflop.
