A simple solution:Get someone you trust to act as the dealer (they can handle two tables at once if they don't have to supervise the betting).Get an automatic card shuffler (to reduce shuffling time) and use 4 decks for two tables, so there is never a lag. Have the dealer cut the deck onto a cut card. Make sure a card is burned at every turn. Everyone in the game will appreciate the efforts made to keep the game completely honest. If you aren't using 100% plastic cards, invest in some and use them exclusively. They are very difficult to mark unless you make a strenuous effort to do so. The edges on the common plastic coated paper cards start to peel after a few dozen shuffles and it's possible to pick up on which card is which based on the damage. By all rights, the minute one card in the deck is damaged, the entire deck should be thrown out of play.

I think you got to set an example that cheating is a zero tolerance occurance... He might not be the only one taking some kind of edge in your game...Would you let him nail your wife, and forgive him???? Well this is worse!

To the happier part of your post.....where is hamilton NJ in relation to summit, NJ? I live 5 minutes form summit. Would love to find some area home games....still trying to get to your game KDawg.
hamilton is down by princeton.as far as my game, like I said, just email me or PM me and I will give details, cause I don't want to be giving directions to my place or my home phone # over an internet forum. I have the email option up under my avatar. dewey if you want to play at my place too its cool.k, as far as the cheater, he should be banned for a period of time. Since you can't prove that he cheated on each win, you will have to keep his records intact

Ok, firstly the guy was at least stand up, as he came back and admitted he cheated, then properly left. Now as had been suspected he was obviously doing this over a course of time, so it wasn't an isolated incicdent. The two thoughts could be related to the punihment.Since he was likely an habitual cheater if anyone want him banned you should abide. Does the guy even want to come back? If he does, and the rest consent, then he needs to address the players and apologize, offer up some type of retribution, (beer and food), or a tourney where he puts up the prize. He did confess which left the door open for forgiveness. Ask Clinton...

I think a 1-6 month ban is the minimum punishment. I also wouldn't let him back in if any of the regulars didn't want him. Definatly a tough situation to be in.

That sucks, I probably would have stabbed him in the ear with a steak knife...
I love the fact that you created an account, loaded up an avatar, and posted for your first time...and wrote this.Strong work.
I thought the same thing, sometimes you just need the right motivation to sign up. At least his first post got a reply.

These are some rules that everyone should be told before being able to play at a home game. Some people haven't played in a Casino so these rules aren't always self apparent.rules,1. No dealer abuse. This one is tough in a home game, but there is a difference in talking a little smack and truly insulting the person who delt the cards.2. The floor person (person hosting the home game) ruling is final.3. Keep your voice down. No yelling. It can be exciting to win or lose a big all in pot, but dude, I have neighbors less than 1/4 mile away. 4. Never play with money you can't afford to lose.5. Have fun.Now I see that there should be a sixth rule.6. If you are caught cheating, not only will you be banned for life, but you will forfeit your buy in and will be asked to leave immediatly. If you don't leave immediatly, then be prepared to be forcefully removed. No one wants to go to jail or to the hospital over a poker game. How does this guy still have his real estate license? If he is willing to cheat his friends/ co-workers out some money in a home game, then his ethics are non-existant. This reflects on his character more than anything else. He is definatly not "friend" worthy! My vote is banned for life.

Ray - You make some good points. I guess if it really was a friend I could forgive them. I just can't picture my friends doing that.
Yeah I know exactly what you mean. But for the past seven years I have run card tournaments (not poker) as a profession, and I've seen people make some stupid mistakes. I've also seen some people do full 180's. I've had people banned from my events for a year or two come back and make good, having had a couple of years to grow up and buy a clue. And I've seen the opposite where they just get banned again a few weeks/months later. The events I run aren't the same as poker in all respects, but the parallels are close enough that I can understand this guys situation.(By the way, for those of you that are curious, I still support the ban for life idea for these guys. The time fram bannings that come from my event are a) not handed down by me, a governing body determines bannings, and B) most often directed at players in their teens who, to be honest, are teens, and just need some growing up time to straighten out.)Ray

in my home game we, a) have a cut cardB) have the person to the right of the dealer cut every hand.let him back, pretty hard to cheat with that. you may not want him to deal, to keep cards away from him, and to remind every one at every orbit that he was caught cheating. that will get annoying after a while, but at 1st i would do it.

I think that by him coming back to the house and saying sorry, i think that goes a long way. if he didnt do that then i wouldnt be asking for advise. But he did do it and my read was that he was sorry and felt bad. Now thats not a excuse for him doing what he did. I think i will leave it up to the players in the game. This Thursday if he wants he can come over before we play say what he wants or he can choose not to show whatever. Then leave it up the guys what they want to do. ill have them vote. Ill abstaine and let them determine what the deal is and there vote will stand. But if there going to vote then its only fair to let him talk to them beforethey do. This way if anyone needs any info or has a question about why he did it. Trial by a jury of his peers. Im really not this nice of a person but like i said before this decison will inpact much more then poker.

An apology wouldn't cut it here for me. It doesn't matter if he his my "friend" because as many people have said that how good of friend is he if he cheats you out of money. Especially if I knew him to be an honest person and always trusted him then to catch him cheating, I could never look at him the same again. Cheating is just unforgivable in my eyes. Now if you'll excuse me I have to go rig up my jacket for my home poker game tonight.

No offense, but I think this is a horrible idea. First, you are the runner of this event. Not handling this yourself is a cop out and will undermine your authority.Second, a vote will do nothing but divide your peers on their feelings towards this event, and will create a rift between the players far greater than you just making a decision. The people who voted for banning will stop coming if they didn't get it because they will no longer trust the game. If they do get it, they will be resented by the friends of the cheater for a long time to come. Whereas if you just make the decision, people will only be mad at you, and that sucks, but hey, its a tough job being the event manager. If you choose to ban him, you are unlikely to lose players, but friends will be pissed at you. If you choose not to ban him at least temporarily, you will lose the trust of your players. I would never do a vote, and I would never do a PUBLIC vote. If you truly insist on doing this idea, at least make all voting private to negate the ill will the players will feel against each other.Sorry if I'm on a soapbox here, but its not me preaching so much as talking from experience, having run into this sort of thing multiple times before.Ray

We always just use a joker for the cut card... I think its very important to have one for the 2 obvious reasons, cheating & exposing the bottom card when dealing. I feel bad for you situation, I definitly wouldn't play a single hand with him again and I hate to say it but it sounds like your friendship will be effected atleast to some degree.

I hate to be harsh, but in most cases once a cheater always a cheater. I would ban him permanently. It is easy to say I am sorry, once you are caught. The impression I get especially since he argued so much initially is that he only apologized because he knew the jig was up and he knew he had no chance of ever playing with you guys unless he copped to cheating AFTER he was caught in the act.Just my 2 cents worth. I work in Bridgewater, NJ, I think Hamilton isn't too terribly far. If it is a reasonable distance I would be interested in the game.I live in eastern PA and have been looking for a decent game either close to work or close to home, perferably home but either way would work.Good luck in whatever you decide.

Am i the only one who thinks the 2nd cut is lame? We don't do it at a casino - why do it in a home game? I watch everything in a card game, the dealer included. I'm watching every movement. If he's cheating then someone's gonna see it. The cutting card by the 2nd person is kind of ridiculous in my opinion.
