I just had my first casino experience this past Sunday. I played at a casino in detroit and played 1-2 nl, max buy in 200 dollars. The 2nd hand i played, i looked down and saw two black aces. I about shit my pants and obvioulsy misplayed the hand when i overbet. i started with 75 dollars and through several key hands, built my stack to 250 (which i then blew playing blackjack). I doubled up early when my pocket 8's spiked a set on the flop and checked until a river king matched someone else's hand. also, several other nice hands.Anyways, the real reason i posted this topic is that every half an hr, you had to tip the dealers 5 dollars( they switched dealers every half an hr religiously) and i wondered if this is customary of all casinos. I played for 6 hrs and this is quite a substanial amount for a max buy in of 200 dollars. SO is this common????????????

It's not a tip, it's the casino's table fee for playing hold'em. They either take a rake (a percentage of the each pot) or a time charge--a half hour fee. The time charge fees go into one box, and the tips go into a separate box.

In Australia it is absolutely forbidden to tip the dealer no matter what. In fact they can be fired for accepting any tips at all.

Lol if that was the tip then the dealer would be making 5*10*2= $100/hr in tips at a full table? I think not.Time fees at the low limit tables are retarded. They might be saving the maniac who is in every pot some money but it screws the tight players.

There was a thread on if paying time per half hour was better than rake:http://www.fullcontactpoker.com/poker-foru...1234&highlight=And here is my response:Depends on how many hands you get dealt, if there was a rake, what would it be, and how many hands (and how big) you win.For example, at a 9-handed table, you get to play 2 rotations, or 18 hands in a half hour (One hand dealt every 1:30 sec.)If the rake was $2 per pot, with a $1 jackpot drop, and another $1 rake per $X in pot, the amount of rake generated my a casino in those 18 hands would be, with one hand with an extra $1 rake would be $55. ($3 rake per pot * 18 pots= 54 + $1 for big pot) With this example, each player in theory contributes $6.11 dollars in rake and jackpot drop. While the $5 per half hour may seem unfair, it is fair, yet the less pots you win, the worst this system is.Example: You only win one pot at the 1/2 game in a half hour. You win $20, and lose $3 to the rake. In this, you would save $2 if it was a rake comparted to a time limit.Yet if you won tons of pots, this time system would work out well.Example: You win three pots in a half hour. You win $50 from all three pots combined. If each of these hands was raked, you would lose at least $9 in rake, more if the pots were large enough for more rake. In the timed system, you would only lose the $5 per hour. In this situation, the rake bad, and the time system is great. In retrospect, the time limit depends on the amount of hands you win, which is somewhat dependent on your playing style. If you are tight, and like to wait for hands, the timed system is not to your advantage. Yet if you are loose/aggressive, this is great. Also, the faster the dealer, the better this system is. Three to four hands extra per half hour adds up over one evening. If the dealers are slow and not properly trained, look for a raked game.-Hope this helps. And no, what you described is not a tip. The casino should explain it better if you were confused. If they were raking the pots, and charging you per half hour (which I doubt, but you are playing in Detroit :club: ) Then you are getting censored in the censored.
