im a rookie but what was this?

Recommended Posts

I'm watchin poker on tv. Guy 1 raises 3 times bb (has A 8)guy 4 calls (has J J)heads up. Flop comes 9 8 2 unsuited---guy 1 bets half pot guy 4 folds. Was this not a horrible fold. Chip stack was equal. I'm relatively new so need opinions. Thanks.

I saw that episode too. Personally, I think the guy that folded JJ was an idiot. With the amount of time he was spending thinking I was sure he was figuring how he could get the most money out of the guy, not "should I fold?

good lord i saw that too, i started yelling at the f'n TV. i couldnt believe he folded that.its the partypoker open thing... 6 guys to a table, winner advances to a final table, and the winner of that table gets 100K.later on one of the guys, 3-handed, gets KJ suited and folds.

Given the structure of the tournament (winner advance), I am surprised by the move as well.Keep in mind, we have the benefit of seeing the cards while this guy did not. I did not see the episode, but there are numerous reasons to fold:1. Read on an opponent (in this case a bad read)2. History at the table (did Guy 1 make a similar move with a monster hand)3. Were they the chip leaders?4. Were the blinds small enough to wait for a better place to make a stand.I like the comment above about amateurs don't throw away overpairs...I am guessing the guy that folded used a combo of the reasons above to make what he felt was the right move at the time.

Yes, maybe he was thinking Guy 1 had 10/J, 10/7, or 7/6. He didn't want to gamble with this draw, with J/J.Nice Bet though, to get Guy4 to fold (I must say).Bad read, Good bet.
WTF???I would happy to get my money in as a 2-1 favorite
