i would like some advice

Recommended Posts

In about 2 weeks i'll be stepping into the biggest game of my life, a nl-holdem cash game with a minimum buy-in of $50 and max of $100. I know this might seem like small stakes for most of y'all but for a college student who is normally very poor this is a pretty big game. I am a decent player, I am fundamentally sound and my people reading skills are decent. Is there any advise or tips that the more experienced players could offer me as i go into this game?

Be patient, be confident, try not to think about it as money, but as chips. That's about the best I can do for ya :club:

It's a home game but i've only met one of these guys so i'll be going into this game pretty blind as to who will be there and thier style of play.
If this is a regular game, you might go and watch for awhile first (if they let you) to see what kind of game this is.

If you're worried about the money, don't play. Scared money is dead money.
Yeah, what he said. Every time I've tried to play above my head, I get nervous, my hands shake, and I play too many hands because I can't let a blind get away from me ("I could buy a DVD with the $20 I was forced to put in the middle! I have to get it back!")

Do you know the players or are they going to be complete strangers? My advice here is going to seem obvious, but here are a few things that may be helpful:1. Go in with confidence. If you are sure of your skills and are not intimidated then the others will pick up on that right away. Don't let the size of the buy-in affect your play. Different stakes seem to cause a lot of players to change their style because they are risking more or less $ with each bet. Don't let that happen. You should play the same way as if the game was a $5 buy-in.2. Play conservatively for a while. Don't get tricky. Let other people battle over the small pots and try to get a handle for how everybody plays. After you get a bit of info on most of the table, you can start opening your game up a bit and make some plays. But at first just sit back, wait for premium hands, and simply observe the rest of the table. 3. Shift gears once you start playing more pots. Don't let the rest of the table peg you as a certain type of player. I played in a home game where I was known for being very tight. As soon as they started talking about that, I knew I had a chance to steal some pots so I started making moves and showing the table my rags just to keep them guessing. Good luck.

Finance Major.like everyone said. u should never play with money you cant afford to lose., This money should already be "gone" in your mind., you should not be expecting to see any of it. (thats the luck portion of the game)Now the fun stuff. Being nervous and scared is ok. There will be poor players, and some aggressive lose players. Make sure you scope the scene, stick ith your "A" game, keep your flop stats low, and dont try to worry too much about making the final table.Good luck to you.

Remember that it's the same game you always play. The other players will probably also be less experienced than you think so you don't need to feel intimidated. If you are as solid as you say, you'll be one of the better players at the table. Take it down! Good luck.

WOW, that was too funny...I think I just got myself and 5 other guys at work fired because we were laughing so hard at that leeroy has gotten many a person fired. Question though, do you think he says in the beginning: "alright times up, lets do this!" or "alright chums, lets do this!"
