misdeal question

Recommended Posts

I was in a tournament yesterday which I am actually involved with running. I also play but got nocked out holding AA got called when I went all in and the other Player had 77. He caught one on the flop... oh well. I decided to deal for another table to help things go along quicker. The blinds at the time were 400/800 with 7 players on the table. Small Blind folds, along with 3 others. Meaning 4 people in stayed. I then grabbded the cards but when I pulled them back to deal they got caught on the felt and the entire deck went on my lap and on the floor. I felt horrible and I didn't know how to actually play out the hand. Once I grabbed the cards the button threw his cards in the stack because he thought it should all be re-dealt. If he wouldn't have done that the answer would be easy. However it made it more difficult to resolve. I will tell you what I did but I would like to know the "professional answer". Since the player threw the card in the messed up deck I took back the cards of the 4 players who called the big blind. I re-dealt new hands only to those 4 who stayed in and started play again. Though I believe this was the wrong thing to do I had to make a decision that was fair to everyone. Let me know what a Casino would do if this actually would happen in a professional establishment. Though I know the chances are high I am sure this has happened at some point.

I don't know the official ruling, but what you did seems the nuttiest of all choices. I'd either make it a total misdeal and start over, or just shuffle the cards you dropped and continue on with the hand, the later being which I would likely do.

However the one player put his cards in the pile because he felt we were going to redeal. That is what I wanted to do and I think it is the correct but I got over ruled by the other person running the tournament with me. I think everyone should have got the their money back and the entire round be played again.

Never put your own cards into the muck unless you have been told to do so by the dealer or the tournament director. Doing so is just dumb.

In a casino...it would have been a dead hand. Floor would have come over to take cards and play would have begun again after a new " set up " was shuffled into play. They get kinda touchy about cards on the floor...that's one of the reasons you must keep your cards on the table.

Now, if none of the cards were revealed, could the argument be made that the player who threw in his cards just mucked them? The cards on the floor could be picked up, shuffled, and put back in play with the three remaining players finishing the hand with their original cards. Again, I don't know if I'm right, but is this a viable option here if no one sees any of the other cards?I agree that if the cards were revealed during the slip, then the hand would need to be redealt from scratch.

I saw something similar to this happen when I was playing at the Mirage and the floor guy came over and had the dealer reshuffle the remaining cards (that had fallen) and finish dealing out the hand.
