digitalmonkey 929
I've only been playing online since August 2004 so I still have an enormous amount to learn. Despite my "poker virginity" I feel that I am ahead of where I thought I would be. There are aspects of my game that need improvement (isn't there always) and some that I have not even touched (odds for instance). My immediate goal is to improve my concentration. Anyone have any suggestions? Any good books out there?
tekn0wledg 0
I don't have any book advice that will help you concentrate more, but I think for me it helps to stay immersed in the game. With online poker that is a bit more difficult as there are no physical tells to watch for, but betting patterns and other tendencies do play into effect online.I play multiple tables online as well just to help me stay into the game, otherwise my mind will wander. digitalmonkey 929
I think it has a lot to do with the lack of physical tells. I constantly find my mind wandering or not paying close enough attention to the other players. I will take notice if someone is constantly raising preflop or bets big everytime an Ace hits the board, but most of the time I can't even remember what I folded.
Pupsta 0
I cannot resist the temptation of the internet, especially this forum. Whaddya know, I'm running a sit-n-go while I'm posting this. Yawn, 25o, fold, yawn. Clickity click click. 79o fold to a raise. Click click click. Shiny buttons.....I have the attention span of a genetically warped gnat.
ErikM 0
When I'm not in a hand I try to guess what the players involved may be holding... After you do it for a while you start to get good at it... And obviously reading hands is an important skill to have.At first you will prob be off on your guesses but the more and more you do it the better you get at it.Once you learn about odds, calculating them as new money goes into the pot will keep you focused on the game as well.Similar to first activity I like to calculate pot odds that ppl are being offered before they act... tekn0wledg 0
When I'm not in a hand I try to guess what the players involved may be holding...This is crucial to live game play. I find it keeps me attuned to the game much more than just trying to pay attention. You find yourself paying attention the smallest details thereafter.
poker_bull 0
I've found that if I am continuously thinking about one or two things while playing, I'll stop playing, take care of those situations and get back to playing. You'll find that if you have nothing to think about, focusing on the task at hand seems to get easier and easier. While in a game, ask yourself what hands the opponent has, why the bet a certain why, what they did in the past. This will keep you in the now.
therock 0
When you care enough for your money; when you realize that you want to win the money but not the game; when you realize that you don't want to revenge on someone's bad play on you; when you know that to make money from holdem is like a bussiness and not really about fun; when you have lost enough and felt the pain... then you will know how to concentrate, how to read people, how to be a better player ... Mandelbrot 0
When you care enough for your money ... when you know that to make money from holdem is like a bussiness and not really about fun... then you will know how to concentrateAlong these lines, picture your chips as real money. Consider your opponents as hungry scavengers trying to take food from your children's mouths. Don't approach it like a game - but you can certainly have fun while doing it. digitalmonkey 929
It would seem that picturing such things (wandering mind...remember) is what I'm trying to avoid.
Mandelbrot 0
My point is that you need to change your point of view, your approach. I'm not encouraging you to daydream about your opponents.
