i just won a bet for paul phillips

Recommended Posts

Playing in a $5 SNG on stars. it was down to 4 and we bubbled for about half an hour. When the bubble bursts for some guy, an observer starts chatting away and I'm wondering why the guy busted out in 9th is hanging around watching us play. Then the other guy busts out in third and the observer says something like "be proud man, you just lost to Paul Phillps." I'm like, wtf are you talking about? The observer proceeds to explain that he bet Paul Phillips $200 he coudln't win a $5 SNG.Anyway, I'm still pretty skeptical. I read Paul's blog so I then proceed to quiz him on himself according to stuff I've read on his blog. He pretty much had the answers to everything so I was less skeptical but not completely sold. When we got heads up he had about a 3/1 chip lead and I folded too many hands probably because I was doing too much interrogating. As my stack was dwindling and the blinds were rising, I pushed in a couple of times and sucked out on him twice. I then told him I was actually Danny Nguyen and then Tuan Le.He finally busted me when I couldn't suck out yet again with my k6 vs. his a-10. I told him to make sure he posts a blog about his bet and that way I would be sure it was him. He said he would but coudln't say he was playing on Stars so he would have to say it was in a home game. He was playing under a friends accout, not extempore. So, I''ll know for sure some time in the next couple of days of it was him or I was suckered in by a couple of guys having some fun at my expense. It was still fun, regardless. I made the otherwise excruciatingly slow sng a lot of fun for the last 15 minutes.

It's a nice change of pace when an imposter contributes some fun value rather than focusing exclusively on vandalizing my reputation.

You just don't want to admit you were slumming 5 dollar SnG's.

That's awesome.

I sometimes wonder how Paul always seems to know when there is a thread about him. I tend to doubt that he is constantly checking the fcp forums, so it's an interesting question. Once I'm through wondering I then go about my regular life and think about the fact that I just wasted 15 seconds on the subject.

Well, I did ask the mystery person if it was ok if I posted about this on FCP and he said it was fine. That being said, I'm satisfied that I was duped but those guys had a good bit going. As for shezzavague, sorry you're a miserable prick. Cheer up buddy, life won't always suck for you.

I would be surprised if it wasn't Phillips playing against you. What is the alternative? Someone had their buddy watch a whole $5 S&G just so when you got heads up he could try to rattle you by mentioning a pro's name? Plus he memorized the extempore blog so he could answer any questions? Maybe that is what happened...I think sometimes I underestimate the stupidity of the common man.

If that sounds improbable to you then you definitely don't want to hear my whole catalog of stories. You will grasp the wonder of the internet more fully once you can get your head around the idea of "infinite free time."

Yeah I know. What I was saying is that if that was an imposter at the S&G than he would have to answer this line of questioning from the op:
Anyway, I'm still pretty skeptical. I read Paul's blog so I then proceed to quiz him on himself according to stuff I've read on his blog.
Hopefully this makes more sense. If not...go fornicate yourself with an iron stick.

Any stories better than the Nigerian scam artist?

I believe it. It's not that I don't understand the concept of free time, I just don't understand the concept of using free time to impersonate someone else for ridiculously pathetic scam attempts.Hopefully none of them have actually harmed you in any way. If you are in the mood to tell a particularly funny one, I'm all ears.

Of course, we have learned that Paul Phillips was not the actual player in this story. Nonetheless, I did some thought on the issue as a whole before scrolling to read extempore's entry. I would be surprised if he accepted the bet anyway. Even against eight sub-par players, a must-win bet probably would not be profitable (as anyone who watched tonight's WPT repeat can attest). I would think his chances were somewhere between 3-1 to 5-2.
