Accumulating tourney chips

Recommended Posts

Everyone has heard the saying: "Every chip you accumulate in a tourney has less value than the chip before it!"Unless...You win an extra 5000 tourney chips, have a monster stack, and take a gamble knocking out another player that you may not have, had you not wonthe previous 5K pot.just not sure I fully understand this concept. Anyone care to elaborate?

My understanding is limited, but from a simple perspective, every chip you accumulate is another one that can keep you from busting. The whole chip and a chair thing. You just need one chip to keep playing, but if you have 11,000--each chip isn't worth as much.I haven't read anything on MTT so hopefully that is right.

I think that's goofy logic. When you have 5k, and the blinks are 200-400, you've got 12x the bb and are somewhat more focused on doubling up than on knocking opponents out. When you double to 10k, with the blinds the same, you become more focused on the tourney equity in knocking someone out. Your focus has shifted from staying alive to improving your chip position and moving up in the $$$. Also, you can afford to be a more aggressive player because those stacks that are 1/2 or 1/3 of yours will be more tentative to call a big raise from you for 1/2 to 1/3 of their stacks. You can steal more chips. The chips are no less valuable, they just become swords instead of shields.

Your concern in a big tournament should never be to knock other players out until you hit the final table and the pay schedule starts getting ridiculous. The focus until that point should always be accumulating chips in any way possible. There is very little equity in knocking a person out until the later stages. For example, having more chips is no excuse for needlessly calling a shorter stack's all in with 22 hoping, praying for a race.

Meh... actually it depends how short his stack is... But, you make a good point. Still though, the tactics are shifting from being defensive to aggressive. From folding blinds to stealing them... etc. That doesn't change the value of the chips.
