I, too, love the shootout idea. I'm very happy they are allowing two-line passes and are making goalies wear smaller equipment. I think these new rule changes are really good for the league and the fan base will get larger due to them.Question (since I don't have ESPN for the summer): Did they agree to a salary cap? Details?

I am a big fan of the new rules. I think the NHL is going to need to make the games more exciting (more scoring) for casual fans to want to watch it. The lifelong fans will enjoy it no matter what, but the league won't survive without the casual fans. My only concern is that the new emphasis on scoring will turn the NHL into Major League Baseball, where homeruns are more exciting than seeing a pitcher's duel for nine innings.I for one prefer to see a great defensive game than a great offensive game.

It seems like they've gotten insanely strict on fighting. A player who instigates a fight in the last five minutes gets a game misconduct, a one game suspension, AND the coach gets fined $10,000! That's a message if I ever heard one.

I think the no red line rule has the potential to really open up the game. Not only will it lead to more breakaways, it will also lead to players goal sucking (ie not coming back on defense).Hopefully the new goalie pads will increase scoring. I remember the days when a slapshot off the rush actually had a chance of going in the net!

I think that's a bad idea. What attracts a lot of people to the game is the fighting. I personally couldn't care less if fighting was allowed or not, but if the rule changes are designed to get more people to become fans, the fighting rules are headed in the wrong direction.

In a nutshell, there is a 39 million dollar Cap, with a minumum requirement of 21 million.TSN has an excellent rundown of everything related to the CBA. Here is a link to a FAQ page, which answers most questions anyone would have.http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story.asp?ID=13...133&hubName=nhl

Yea but the rule only comes into play for the last 5 min of the game. You can fight all you want until then, haha.-Travis

Although I love watching shootouts, it certainly doesn't define who is the best team, so i'm not too big of a fan of that rule. All the other rules look good, not so sure about the delay of game penalty if a goalie freezes the puck unnecessarily. It depends how far they take the "unnecessarily"

Having a shootout decide a game played 6 on 6 for 60 minutes is completely ridiculous. Imagine if a HR derby decided a baseball game, or a 3 point shootout to decide NBA games tied after 48 minutes. A tie has been a part of hockey forever... leave it be!Here's the real solution... call the rules as they're written, and we can have some pre-Lemaire hockey again... gimme 7-5 games, and give me shutouts because a goalie played GREAT not because he faced a Brodeur-like 14 shots.

Yeah, I don't like the shootout idea. This way, a team could have a few breakaway specialists, and play for a tie because a shootout is +EV. See, I worked poker into hockey. BOOYAH!

I'm just glad they'll be playing again soon. One can only handle so much AHL and college hockey. The team that loses the shootout will still get 1 point so in effect there will still be "ties." I thought the 5 min. 4-on-4 OT during regular season was kind of silly anyway so if they wanna use shootouts that's fine by me. I think shootouts will bring in some more casual fans to the game which is definitely a good thing. In any case, now that they've adopted these new rules they need to actually stick to them for a full season and see how things shake out unlike what they did a few years ago when they decided to crack down on the obstruction penalties and then pretty much stopped calling it halfway through the season.

It's not fighting as a concept they're trying to do away with, it's the "goonism" for lack of a better word. Notice they didn't add any penalties for regular fights, but only for ones that alsoinclude the instigator penalty. What they're trying to stop is another Todd Bertuzzi incidentwhere a guy is sent out in the last couple minutes of a blowoutgame to basically goon a guy into a fight. There's nothing wrong with stopping that garbage.Rest assured, the usual once-a-game tussle won't be affected.

Uhh.. if Team A gets 2 points, and Team B gets 1 point, where's the tie? a tie is when the two teams get an equal number of points... 1 point for a SOL is the same as the 1 point for an OTL loss that the league has been using.

i was reading in the local paper today that bertuzzi is maybe going to have to sit out 10-20 more games. what a joke. he served his time let him play.
I say let Bertuzzi play again when Steve Moore plays again. Yeah, maybe his intention wasn't to end his career, but his intention WAS to hurt him... it was a completely despicable act, and no punishment is too severe.

So you feel that hitting someone from behind and breaking their neck and perhaps ending their career should only be puinshed by about 30 games? What Bert did was cowardly and his actions brought the sport of hockey the wrong kind of attention. I don't think he should be punished for a whole year or anything, but sitting out another 10 games (in addition to missing the end of last season and the playoffs) would be appropriate in this case. In a a long season like the NHL has 10 games is not harsh in my opinion.

I like the shootout rule, that is a much better and exciting way to decide the game. Although I am going to reserve judgement on the new offensive zones and the goalie pad regulations. I have a lot of respect for the game's records and I would hate to see this turn into "arena" hockey. I mean are we going to lower the MTV 10-goal net with 2 minutes left? I am all for bringing fans back through proactive initiatives but lets keep the history. P.S. .... I hope Lemieux comes back to play with Crosby.

I LOVE the rule changes..1) Ties suck!2) getting rid of the redline for two line pass purposes will be AWESOME..3)I really hope they enforce holding like they say they are going to. Holding away from the puck ruined the game, IMO...4) It sounds like to me they are trying to make the NHL more like the international game, which I'm all for, 'cause I perfer international hockey.5) all in all, looks like the nucks got their stuff together..Question for Daniel: Since you live in Vegas, where do you go to get your NHL fix? Kings? Coyotes? Just watch on TV? Fly home to Toronto? All of the Above?

I really think the game is being changed too much.Maybe, the fans you gain will balance out with the fans you lose. I mentioned this last week in another thread, but Major League Soccer tried the whole hockey style shootout and it really didnt help them. There are so many tie situations that it will just get boring after a short while. To help this situation, i think it would be better to play 4 on 4 for an entire period or maybe two, idk. As a result, it would be necessary to shorten the season to allow more rest time. Since there are fewer games being played attendence will be increased for the remaining games, bc you have the same demand, but a lower supply.

bertuzzi made a mistake he served his time and now he should be set free. Mr Moore was a coward also IMO for not dropping the gloves with Bertuzzi. he sure had balls when he took a shot at naslund but he lost them when he couldnt take a free shot at someones head. the Colorado coach was a ****ing moron. he knew Mr Moore was a target but he put him out anyway just to get his teams spirit up. Mr Moore didnt want to be out and the Colorado coach sent him out anyway. im not defending bertuzzi but im pointing out that the whole situation was caused by an acumulation of factors from both players and their teams.

Personally, I'm really happy with the rule changes. Purists like to point out that baseball, basketball, and football don't decide their games with a home run derby, slam dunk contest, and punt, pass, kick respectively. I'll concede that point, but hockey is just not feasible to keep playing until it's over. It's too strenuous of a sport and sometimes lasts 5 or 6 periods in the playoffs. I love the gruel of the playoffs, but am I going to stay up watching a Tuesday night game against Columbus when the fifth period starts and it's 2:30am? Probably not. Let's not forget that it's not like they're doing away with the game altogether. Shootouts only come into play when 65 minutes of hockey have already resulted in a tie.As for the other rule changes, I like all of them except the instigator deal. And I'm not sure about the limiting the goalie's play. To me puck-handling should be a skill that a goalie should get rewarded for, but whatever. I don't think it will come into play too much either way.The new delay of game for shooting the puck out could add a scary new wrinkle for teams with older d-men (listen up, Chelios).

Steve Moore had already gotten into a fight earlier in the game and had held his own. If Naslund wanted to settle things with a fight I'm sure Moore would have been willing to oblige. Bertuzzi fighting Moore would be the equivalent of Daniel Sedin fighting Adam Foote. Still in your opinion it was Moore's and the Avs coaching staff's fault. That's so sad.By the way how does Moore know to drop his gloves and fight when Bertuzzi comes from behind?
