turn a home game into a seat at the wsop main event

Recommended Posts

Who doesn't want a chance to sit down at the WSOP main event? But who is willing/able to plunk down $10k for the opportunity? These were a couple of questions that a group of friends and I would talk about, and eventually came up with the answers. Here's what we came up with.We got together a group of guys (initially we wanted 25 but ended up with 27) to play a tournament once a month ($60 a man) for one year. The total monthly pot ($1,620 in our group) is divided into two pots: (1) $1,000 going into the Main pot and (2) $620 paid back out to the top 5 places. At the end of each month each player was awarded points based on how they finished with first place getting 25 pts, second getting 24 pts, etc.., and the last two places getting 0 pts (we had two people enter late into the tournament and instead of renumbering the points we just gave the last 2 places 0). So at the end of the year, the player with the most points gets the main pot ($12,ooo) and HAS to go play in the WSOP main event. So far we have played two months and everything has run smoothly. The largest potential problem issue that we have hopefully addressed in advance is keeping people interested even though they have no chance before the final month. We decided to make payments due (4 payments of $180) the first, third, fifth and seventh months so that we don't get people dropping out. Also by paying out the top 5 spots, it gives people the chance to make some money even though they wont have a chance to win the main pot.Has anyone else tried this? If so, I'd love to hear how it went and what the pitfalls were (if any). Also, I'll gladly post the link to the rules sheet if anyone is interested.Tobeyedit..Here's the link to our rules page.http://www.geocities.com/millstreetcrew/WS...OP2006flyer.htm

Haven't thought of that, sounds like a great idea. The only big problem is what you mentioned, people who clearly aren't going to have a chance aren't going to be willing to keep donating to the fund, you know.

I know. Even after two months some people almost have no chance. One guy has 2 points and the leader has 45. To try and avoid people bailing on us, all the money will be collected at the start of the 7th month, so if someone wants to bail after that it wont effect the overall pot.

But that is a great idea though. Have it as an open tourney, where anyone who wants to play can, and then you'll just have to keep up with everyones points.

Sounds very cool to me.So winner will spend $720 to get $12k (the $10k buy-in + 2k for accomadations.)2 Questions:a) How much does 2nd get?B) What if they up the WSOP price for 2006?

I don't know if this would be more or less "fair" but you could scrap the cumulative point system and just play a big slow-structured tourney at the end for the WSOP seat.OR, a compromise:You can allow everyone to play in the final tourney for the 10K seat, but distribute starting chip stacks based on each player's accumulated points. That way, even the least successful players during the year get a shot, but with a short stack.

Easy solution. All players that play in every event (or make payment for missed events) receive 2% of the winners action. This way the group as a whole is investing together for one seat and it should be the best player in the group that plays for everyone else. You could do more but than the player will have less than 50% of himself. A chance at $150,000 will still be enough to keep interest.A variation could be the winner has 50% of his action and players are awarded a share of the remaining 50% based on final finish. ie: 2nd place gets 15%, 3rd place gets 10% all others receive 1%.

Giving the other players a piece seems like the best way to keep interest. If you have a group of loyal players this is obviously a great idea. However, someone is gonna lose interest and it will mess everything up. Maybe collect all of the money now??? Good luck though, its a great idea in a perfect world.

We talked about everyone not going getting 1% of the winner. That idea didn't go over to well. Everyone wants to be greedy and keep it all for themselves. If we were to do something along these lines, if the player cashed, the others would only get a % if he won more than X amount of money. But as of right now, no deals have been made.

They wouldnt do it less than a year in advance. That would affect all the satellites already being run for next year.

My only thought on this is to up the buy-in and give the weekly winners part of it. That would keep people coming back. Up it to 75 or something like that and put $60 towards the seat and pay 200, 130 and 75 for the top 3. At least then you will have people playing for the $.

We already payout each month to the top 5 finishers. Each month the total prize pool is $1,620 and we payout $620 with the $1k going to the main pot.

Oh, ok, I missed that part. Sounds pretty solid.

I'm going to set this up, as I can easily get 27 players willing to do this. I'll keep everyone posted on how its going. I especially love the % of the winner, that'll keep people playing all year.

Collusion will be on it's way about half way through.
True dat. When players are out and their closest friends are close. Here comes the chip dumping.

you are right...we are doing a league membership fee...and we will buy as many seats as we can with that. But this way...we got their money regardless of their performance.g
