wsop2--5 winner is a cheapskate!

Recommended Posts

I have lurked on this website for months and never bothered to create a user account because I am lazy, but I really want to put my two cents in on this issue . I am a restaurant server, it is the only job I have ever really done, it pays well enough and allows me time to pursue other interests and still take care of buisness. However, the only noticeable income I receive is in tips, so it is a subject that tends to stir me up. Some observations- #1 At some point in this thread somebody observed that the winner is not from the U.S. and therefore may not be aware of tipping standards. This may very well be true- I always cringe when europeans sit at my tables because it generally means im about to be screwed. #2 Someone mentioned that he was sure Tiger tips well- B.S. Thank god he has not shown up for the last few years but when he used to bother showing up for the Phoenix Open it was well known in the service industry that he and his family routinely left disproportionate tips. Incidentally, this is not un common with celebrities, personally I would rather wait on Joe Nobody. #3 I mentioned tipping standards. What are the tipping standards for winning a pot, which is essentially what happened- he took down a big pot. I know for myself I probably overtip and I do it on overall winnings for a session- if it is a losing session I tip anyway for service rendered. From my own perspective I would have been so happy that I won I would have automatically tipped 100,000- really, why not? Im going to get it right back in endorsement deals, high dollar freeroll opportunities , appearances- the money train is just starting for me at that point!

So if 4 people come into your restaurant and they all chip in to leave you a tip that is extremely large, do expect the guy who had the biggest steak to pay you extra?

He probably thought about leaving $10,000 or so, but then he realized that even if he did, each dealer would only be receiving $33 of that money. $33 to each dealer is almost nothing. However, $10,000 to a single person is still a lot of money...

No- and by the way that is retarded. I said what I would do. I would be so happy that I won millions of dollars that I personally would spread some wealth to people that helped make it happen, because that is the manner in which I conduct myself.

Like family, friends, peers & colleagues as oppossed to a group of people who were doing their job and have already been paid exceedingly well for it.The reason tipping exists is because it is a known fact that service industry wages are pathetic and need to be bolstered. The benefits of a tipping culture is that you can reward good service and 'punish' bad.A few facts:
  • He already paid a tip the same as everybody else. The dealers & staff were paid exceedingly well because of thisThe dealers did not in any way help him 'make it happen'.He received no preferential treatment from the staff ie he was treated the same as everybody else.Any additional tip that is given would be spread amongst all staff, doing away with the reward system.
    • I think a tip would be valid if
      • It hadn't already been taken out of the prize pool. The staffs wages after hourly rate and forced tips was still lowThe folks giving the tips could choose who the money went to.

That is priceless.Seriously Lois, your restaurant analogy is irrelevant. Did the restaurant you worked at have an automatic 18% gratuity included on the check? DOUBTFUL. If they did, you wouldn't have much of a right to complain when someone didn't wildly overtip. This is what Harrah's did. They jacked their hold up to 6%! This would be similar to a restaurant having an automatic gratuity over 20%.I hope that Hachem left nothing. It's time for someone to start standing up for the players. Otherwise, this tipping issue is going to get completely out of control.FYI --- I worked plenty of years (over 10) in the service industry, so I know what its like to work for tips. But as someone who plays poker for a living now, I refuse to give away more of my money than is necessary.

I worked as a waiter before and I still wouldnt of tipped them anything. Like many people have said before it is ridiculous to ask the players when they are being cashed out if they would like to leave a tip. Is 1,680,000 not enough already?I can guarantee you that even if there was a tip of lets say 100k it would not be equally spread among the dealers. The tournament director would get the most, then down the chain. I take that back, I would of left a 5 dollar bill.

Making everyone pre-pay tips and then expecting additional tips is just a way of extracting as much money out of people as possible. Seems to me that he had already paid his tip. I agree with the people who say that if you're in a restaurant, you don't pay an extra tip if you've already got a 15% service charge included on your bill.Tipping is definitely a cultural thing too. Being British, I get annoyed when people insist on delivering drinks to my table, and that's because I'm used to getting my drinks at the bar and paying for them there and then. But not as annoyed as I get when someone wants a tip for handing me a paper towel and running the tap for me in the toilets/bathroom, or when people try to make me feel guilty for not leaving the tip that THEY think they deserved.

If he didn't, the guy shoulda tipped at least $50k to $75k. Its peanuts to him at this point. Raymer is a complete class guy. Top notch. And don't give me this cultural stuff either. The guy is no dummy and could figure it out. I don't usually sleep with underage girls and boys here in the states, but when I go to the Philippenes, I do. It's just cultural. When in Rome.

I would tip $25000 not a penny more. he won 7.5 million but he has to pay tax on it. leaving $100 (if he did) is an absolute joke but to tell u the truth i dont see why people should tip at all.
I agree. The dealer didn't do anything exceptional to earn that money. He did his job which he already got paid for. I think tipping has gotten completely out of control. Not that it relates, but I hate going to upscale restaurants. The wait staff don't do anything more than the waitresses at the local diner, yet they make about 5 to 10 times the amount of money just because the food is so much more expensive. I usually leave then 15% maximum, but I tip the poor diner waitress about 25% to try to make up the difference. In my opinion, they did the same amount of work, they should get the same amount as a tip. I also hate going to bars and having the bartender expect a dollar tip for opening a stupid bottle of beer for me. Hell, I already pad $3 to $4 for the damned thing, and now I'm supposed to shell out 25% to you because you twisted off the cap? It's ridiculous! Give me the damned bottle and I'll open it myself!Anyway, let's just stop the tipping all around. It comes across as begging by those who expect it and makes it awkward for those of us who have to give it.

Any of you defending this guy, asking "why should you tip them?" must never have never played in a live tourney before in your lives.
Most live tournaments don't take out 3% of the prize pool above and beyond the tournament fee. 3% is a pretty standard tip for those winning tourneys. It's like when you have a big group at a restaurant they add 18% gratuity automatically. If you want to tip more, fine, but it should not be required.

I was at a beach club once and I ordered a bottle of beer and the waitress brought it, I drank it, then ordered another one. I hadn't left her a tip at this point as I was planning to give her a single tip at the end of my stay at the bar (which was pretty much going to be right after the next beer). She says to me "You know, I'd remember what you're drinking a lot better if you tipped me." I said to her "That's ok, I know what I'm drinking and I'll remind you when I need another one." Needless to say, she wasn't pleased, so I finished my beer and left. I would have given her a tip but just because of that comment I stiffed her. She acted as though she did me some huge favor by opening my already ridiculously over priced beer.I understand that these people work primarily for tips, but so what!? Don't make some smart assed comment to me about what you're entitled to for popping a freakin' top.

if i won 7.5 million, the person that dealt me the winner, would be hooked up for sure.
Why? They didn't control the cards you got. All the other dealers did exactly the same job. Why would you hook this one dealer up over all the rest?

You guys are way off base here. The 2% taken out for staff (and 6% total) is actually low by many tourney standards. Some casinos take 10% just for the house. Foxwoods $500 events are $550, the Taj's $500's are $550 and the $300's are $340....and none of those take any money for dealers. Those cuts are stricly house cuts. So while 2% of that prize pool is a lot remember it is being split amongst over 400 people. If you think they've already taken enough money out fine, don't leave anything. If you don't understand the custom fine, ask (or pay attention to the video they show on international flights that explains). But leaving $100 is akin to spitting in their faces. To the people who already said they are being paid enough...HA! They are not getting rich over there. The alternative to tipping? Either dealers who have no clue what they are doing or how about a 10% no cap rake. Want to pay $15 a half hour in time or watch $20 get pulled from every pot...enjoy.And to they guy who said he isn't paying taxes on the money since he's Australian, he would not have been given a check until that money was taken out. Americans are on their own to file, foreigners have that money taklen out up front.

Tell you what. When you start a post with crap like that, how about you back it up with some substance.
The 2% taken out for staff (and 6% total)  is actually low by many tourney standards.
Hi.This tournament is anything but standard. The largest field in history with one of the largest buy-ins resulting in the largest prize pool ever. How about applying some simple logic and spotting when a situation can be considered an exception.
If you think they've already taken enough money out fine, don't leave anything.
Lets see, if they hadn't already taken the 'tip' for staff his winnings would have been $7,650,000. He netted $7,500,000 after having $150,000 taken from his winnings as a tip.
If you don't understand the custom fine, ask (or pay attention to the video they show on international flights that explains).
I missed the bit where it says you should tip before being provided a service as well as tipping after the service too. I promise to pay more attention next time.
But leaving $100 is akin to spitting in their faces.
I wish he was spitting in their faces, but I would suggest that it was him being confused & shell shocked after playing the most stressful game of poker for 14 hours straight and then having 100's of people want his attention/ask him questions/slap him on the back.Word has it that he wasn't aware of the vig and David Plastik told him not to leave any tip.He also wanted to bust open a bundle worth 50k and throw it into the crowd.Of course, these last 2 points are just rumours, somewhat like the OP
To the people who already said they are being paid enough...HA! They are not getting rich over there.
The 2% that was given to staff was split based on the amount of work they did. The dealer who dealt the most downs for the main event received $12,000 in addition to their salary for the main event alone. That is $12,000 for about a weeks work and they wouldn't have worked stupid hours for that.HA! They are getting paid plenty
The alternative to tipping? Either dealers who have no clue what they are doing or how about a 10% no cap rake. Want to pay $15 a half hour in time or watch $20 get pulled from every pot...enjoy.
Firstly, we are talking about the Main Event - you know, a tournament. There is no rake or time pot.Bringing ring game arguments in to this discussion is as daft as... well bringing restaurant arguments in.Secondly. Why not try something that works in every other country. Pay your dealers and casino staff a good salary and prohibit them from accepting tips. When a jobs pay more, you attract better staff and when you have an enviroment where large sums of money are changing hands having policies to prevent favourable treament of clients seems sensible.
And to they guy who said he isn't paying taxes on the money since he's Australian, he would not have been given a check until that money was taken out. Americans are on their own to file, foreigners have that money taklen out up front.
The tax (30%) is taken out up front. However he will be able to claim it all back on his return to Australia.

You guys are incredible! Most of you are probably still in school or college and love to spread gossip wether it is substantiated or not. Grow up!Give the dude the benefit of the doubt.  How the hell do you all know what took place behind closed doors?  Slandering this guys name, calling him a cheapskate... and what do you know of the facts????For a start, you guys only "know" this cause you heard soemone else tell you... and you are furthering the rumour if you accuse him in this way...just 'cause you heard someone say it doesn't mean its true.Secondly, the USA is one of the few cultures in the world where tipping is the norm. In Australia (where he is from) it is actaully against the law and  house rules to tip dealers and casino workers... perhaps he is unaware of American custom, and in the flood of emotions he went through, assumed the policy to be the same.  If he has failed/forgotten/unaware to tip (we dont know that he hasn't) perhaps someone will politely tap him on the shoulder and inform him of the customary thing to do. Do you really think that soemone who payed the$10K in cash to join the main event - and then won, is hard up for money?I know the guy, and I can assure you he ALWAYS does the right and moral thing. He is a class act and a stand up guy.
Pay attention...learn something before you start bashing.

He netted $7,500,000 after having $150,000 taken from his winnings as a tip. Actually 7.5 mil was the 1st place prize if there were 5000 entries or 6600 entries, so actually $0 were taken from his prize. The 7.5 number was announced in March of this year so the only people who had money removed from their portion of the prize pool were the 10 - 560 place finishers.
If you don't understand the custom fine' date=' ask (or pay attention to the video they show on international flights that explains). [/quote']I missed the bit where it says you should tip before being provided a service as well as tipping after the service too. I promise to pay more attention next time.He did not "tip" before being provided a service. He paid an entry fee, that fee was 94% to the prize pool, 4% to the house 2% to the staff. This information was readily available and he had the choice to pay and play or not. A tip is an optional ammount of money given for service...if you are a cheap bastard you don't have to tip.
But leaving $100 is akin to spitting in their faces.
I wish he was spitting in their faces' date=' Why, what did any of the dealers or tournament staff do to be insulted and retaliated against? Harrah's decided where that money went, not Johnny or the dealers. If someone didn't like the system then they should have stayed the hell home. There is no reason any should be pissed off at the money distribution as it was all clearly stated up front.
To the people who already said they are being paid enough...HA! They are not getting rich over there.

They are getting paid plentyI would like to know where this info comes from. I have 2 friends who dealt the series (didn't deal at Binions for the final 27). But I have never heard about this before. In fact the regular dealers are still waiting for their grtuities to arrive.
The alternative to tipping? Either dealers who have no clue what they are doing or how about a 10% no cap rake. Want to pay $15 a half hour in time or watch $20 get pulled from every pot...enjoy.
Firstly' date=' we are talking about the Main Event - you know, a tournament. Ok, no tipping...next time you Buy-in to a $10,000 tounrey and they charge a $2500 fee don't ask why.Secondly. Why not try something that works in every other country. Pay your dealers and casino staff a good salary and prohibit them from accepting tips.Doesn't work in other countries. I have played in England and France. Both places nobody tips, the dealers were rude and slow. And the rake made me almost choke to death, it's insane. Aviation club: 30 euros a half hour for a 30/60 game!!!!! Compare that to $6 or$7 here on average for a 30/60. NO THANK YOU I'LL THROW A TOKE TO THE DEALER AND SAVE $46 AN HOUR IN TIME CHARGE!!!!!When a jobs pay more, you attract better staff and when you have an enviroment where large sums of money are changing hands having policies to prevent favourable treament of clients seems sensible.

The reason tipping exists is because it is a known fact that service industry wages are pathetic and need to be bolstered. Really? T-o I-nsure P-roper S-ervice. Otherwise known as tips. Restaurant wages are not pathetic, the waitstaff is payed a wage and depending on what state it is anywhere from 2.00 to 7.00 an hour plus tips. If anybody actually read my very first post ever I never made a correlation between a restaurant tip and what should be done here. Never said that. All I said is what I WOULD HAVE DONE. Of course that stems from working for tips, because what goes around truly comes around. You guys are truly missing the point here. It is a situation where a person can do two things- he can either reach into his now very deep pockets or he can be an ass. One person earlier mentioned that he had left a tip but took it back after his friends pulled him aside. I can already imagine what was said to make him change his mind.( Dude, dealers already got 2% leaving them more would not be very +EV) Large partys have done this to me as well, when a 15% gratuity is added and a person wants to bump it up to 20% the persons that are usually the broke asses that are not even paying point out that 15% is already added. Sometimes the person paying says, "Yes, but he really took care of us and I would like to leave him 20%." Other times they do the opposite- Which group do you think I personally consider has more class? Seriously, there is alot of money here no doubt- but it is not like that is it for the guy. Think about e verything else that he is going to benefit from this and then realize precisely why I would hook up the beautiful people that made this happen for me.

When you go to a restaurant that adds the 15% gratuity on to the bill, do you give any extra or just pay the 15% on the check?I wouldnt leave any extra if I was Hachem, the tournament staff did just fine with their 2%.
Yeah, I would expect something like this from someone who chooses to reside in ALBEUCUERQE.
