controversy in a $100 nl sng

Recommended Posts

In NL I think background helps paint the picture better and make the decisions easier, so here is a bit of what had happened before the hand.My friends and I had 100 left in our powerplayer acct. and out of the pure thrill of it we decided to join a $100 SNG, We wanted the 500. I played cuz they suck :-) and they just looked over my shoulder and said stuff. Anyway the table was LP they would constantly limp in flops and call down any bet or fold, never raise post flop w/ out something good. As it got down short handed there were 4 of us and the blinds were pretty big, I started being my usual bubble LAG self, and I was constantly raising and winning uncontested ( there was one Loose calling station left to my right and two tight players to my left). As I was raising a bunch I finally get called by the loose player who was BB and I had 66 the flop comes 42 and 1 over card, like a 10 or j, I push after the flop and he calls w/ A,4o... I win and double up to become chip leader w/ 5k and he goes down to about 2.5k. I raise his blind the next round and he folds (thats 3 or 4 in a row to his blind). and now the hand comes when I am again UTG and he is the blind:I get AQo w/ blinds at 200/400 and about a 5k stackI raise 1200 it folds around to the blind who pushes in for about 2.8k so it is a 4,200 pot and its 1800 for me to call, If I do this leaves my stack at 2k and I would be low stack of the table. If I let him take it I have 3800 left and I am in 3rd position in chips (lead swings are obviously huge at this point) what do I do? I called figuring I was only a true underdog against aces and AK, aces are harder to have because I have an A in my hand. I am getting slightly less pot odds than I need to call QQ KK. (QQ again harder to have)I am up against AJ, A10, (possibly A9s) I am a big favoriteI am up against 8's-J's I am getting good odds and I could not only bust the bubble, but have a big lead when it goes 3 handed. My friend who is about to start taking the game seriously and studying it thinks it was a fold, I say I made a good call but im not %100 sure so I would like you guys to settle this for me if you can.if it was a bad call please expand, and if my call was good but my reasoning was bad correct me please. thx

Meh I'll take a stab. I say you made a good call. Since you have been raising a bunch he might think your just stealing and thought his aj or whatever was good. I would of done the same.

Depends on what you are really trying to accomplish with this game - do you want to win or do you want to make it to the money. :? If going for the win, it's an easy call IMO. Even if you lose, you are not out of it by any means. If you just want to place in the money, I think you can lay this down and move on with a fairly good stack of chips 8)

4 handed and a read on the player as Loose. I make this call every day all day. Not to mention that you are getting over 2 to 1 on a call to eliminate a player from the tournament. Good Call.

However, given your stack size and having 2 tight players at the table, with the blinds that high, I would just move all in from that point on. I would have pushed this hand pre flop and take the guess work out of it.

The only thing I would have done differently, given the stacks and the fact that you were UTG, is I think I would have only raised to 900 or 1000. Anything higher and you are forceing them to move all-in on you. Once he pushes, I think you need to call. That said, I have lost many a SNG on the bubble by losing a hefty portion of my stack UTG with AQ. Many a SNG. I just cant get away from it. Cant fold it preflop, cant limp and invite the steal, and you raise it and you get yourself in these scenarios. Its got to be played, but it isnt a scenario I look forward to.

It's a good call as you're getting the right odds and AQo short handed is a very strong hand. Plus you've been aggressive and stealing throughout the SNG, he could be raising with something weaker then he would normally have played.

its a call here 4 handed almost no matter what.  especially with your image of stealing many pots.
my friend keeps saying it wasnt.. even after reading this he doesnt say it was a good call because " YOU WILL LOSE" I guess I'll have to drill it through his stubborn head. the he says he doesnt care anymore about the hand so I tell him he should, and he says "why? its only one fuckin hand In one situation, its not like it matters" lol..teaching people is hard.
