One thread that contained updates about the WPT Championship (either on CardPlayer or PokerPages) said that Danny Nguyen ran though his chips in close to record time (tough to do in that event) and that several pros "couldn't believe how lucky he must have gotten to win that Bay 101 event."I thought the most interesting part about the episode, as well as the thread during the event on PokerPages, was the adjustments Gus made in order to combat someone who is even more aggresive than he is (to the point of recklessness). The ability to switch gears is not something that has been seen out of Gus on too many poker telecasts (WSOP is the only other one where he seemed to show a significant amount of patience), and this display furthers firms up my opinion that he will be a force for years to come, even when adjustments to his traditional style are made.

The guy who one Event #1's name was ANDY Nguyen. Just Clarifying.Jeff

no ur not so much of an idiot... i think there like like a BILLION Nguyen's playing poker ... christ.... ( that possibly could not be a hyperbole ).And a corny ass joke by sexton today... "Men goes all in against Danny"Its a Nguyen Nguyen situation !!! essentially, Nguyen is a homophone for "WIN"
Just be glad they weren't playing at the Wynn casino....

That was the worst WPT table ever! Not much skill ...Lucky gut shots, river beats, runner runner beats. You can't have every WPT event to be great. This WPT event did make me PUKE!!!!!exorcist.gif

Did we ever think we'd see the day where Gus Hansen was making the normal plays at the table. Can anyone imagine what it would have been like if the guy who got outdrawn by the running 7's had been Phil Hellmuth. I'm pretty sure he'd end up in jail after murdering everone in the room, or died of a heart attack. That's one of the worst beats ever. At the final table in the WPT...wow, I think that'd make me give up poker.
funny you mention that, but Phil DID get outdrawn by runner runner in the same exact situation against Hoyt Corkins a couple years ago on a WPT final table. Of course Phil got mad but he really didnt BLOW UP like i expected. As for tonights guy, he reacted pretty well against that donkey.

Sexton at one point said that Gus had folded 6 times in a row and that Danny Idiot had played every hand in the last half hour. How the hell did this guy make it that far?The guy is a dealer too....so I guess he's picked up nothing from watching other players....THE GUY WAS A TOTAL TOOL.How did he do it?

Maybe we can have a heads up match between Danny Nguyen and Eric Brenes to settle who is this season's worst WPT winner. Whoever sucks out the worst takes the title.
It's to the point where I'm wondering if they'll be terming hands as "Brenes suckouts".Of the three Brenes brothers, Humberto seems to have the most skill. It's a shame that he hasn't won a WPT title and his two brothers have.As for the running 7s...that was ridiculous with the way that it played out...but from a statistics point, since the cards come out uninterrupted (they were all-in pre-flop), take the five cards as one event. Catching running 7s is almost the same as flopping two in that case. It just happened to be a bit more suspenseful this way.Oh...and he made a lot of poor calls that sucked out, but no one's mentioned when he hit quad jacks. I thought he made that call way too fast pre-flop.

I'm pretty sure that every all-in (besides his KK vs K-10) Danny was in...he was behind. Most of the time, by a lot.
K-10 vs 99 against Gus. The 2 worst IMO was the calling the all-in with an inside straight draw and the 43 hand calling with like 3 other players.

Yes, but that was Hellmuth's own fault for slowplaying his hand. If he makes a big bet on the turn he takes a nice pot - Corkins told him so after the hand ended (and Phil must have known it in his heart).

yeah, a 3/4 when he had an 11-1 chip leadi'll take that gamble if i'm on a rush like he was on.
Please do. It's the best way to turn an 11-1 chip lead to a 5 - 1.Yes, it's true that his opponent would have to double up three times in order to take the lead... but there is no reason to give away that double up. Calling the all-in with 3-4 is ... shockingly stupid.

My friends and I were watching the show last night, and within 15 minutes were all determined that the 22 y/o from Florida was on a serious bender. If you are looking for a physical reaction as to what cocaine does to you...look at that kid! In all seriousness though, was that kid getting ready for a prize fight?

it amazes me that people like Danny have $10,000 to spend on a tournament. I mean he doesn't play cash games does he? I doubt it since hes calling 2-1 pot odds on gut shot straight draws. That was by far the worst player to ever win a poker tournament and no one as bad as him should never win it again

The only thing that I wonder is if this was just his 'final table strategy'. It's next to impossible to get to the final table playing that badly. For all that Gus hansen is the king of 'Any Two Card' play, he also plays tighter before the final table and knows when to show patience etc, it's when he gets to final tables that he really starts playing his maniac style. But.... if that is his final table/tournament style than DNg is the luckiest millionaire ever. Because he made every attempt to throw away his chips.

On that A7 hand, as soon as the 1/2% showed up next to Danny Nguyen's name, I knew he would get it. Has the WPT ever shown a percentage like that? Not that I remember. On a side note, in the first 25 minutes, it looked like this was going to be a pretty good final table with all of the raising they were doing. Then it just went WAAAYYY down hill from there.

Guess what folks.....bad players win tournaments all the time. I mean, if it wasnt for luck, then hellmuth would win everyone wouldnt he?Everybody is saying that Danny makes em want to puke....but shouldnt he make you think that even you could win a WPT event? He should be giving hope to the masses that they too could win a major, with the right amount of luck. What's the difference between him and Varkoni, or Brad Daugherty?

Seeing someone like Danny win doesn't make me think that I can win a WPT event. Because I'm pretty certain that if I keep my head on straight, playperfectpoker (/sw), and catch a bit of luck hear and there I'd be able to win one... that generally applies to any good/decent player. If I played as recklessly as Danny did, I'd be out before the first level. Or in the first 30 minutes of the final table. It wasn't that he played generally good poker and got lucky over top of that good poker (which I think is a good assessment of Varkoni's win), he played HORRIBLE poker, and consistently had his tournament life saved by incredible longshots. It bugs me, because it enforces the 'Any Two Cards' style that's indicative of a bunch of idiots who generally don't realize that Final Table Play and General Tournament Play and Cash Game Play are different things. While in general the addition of more boneheads to the tables is +EV for good players as a whole, a lot of players are going to find themselves on the wrong side of beats from the 'next' Danny Ng.Beyond all of that, it also re-inforces the stereotype of Poker as a pure luck game over skill, which makes it harder to legalize it in areas where it's illegal etc.

You just need to keep telling yourself that the only way to make money in poker is to play someone who does not play as well as you do. Therefore you should be glad when you see plays like that. True, it is painful to see them win, but 199 times out of 200 a play like that loses, you make tons of money, and think nothing more about it 15 seconds later. 199 similar hands later though and the player hits....

In response to a similar thread on RGP regarding the event, Matt spun it like this (sw):------From where I wa standing it was a lot of fun, Danny is an average tournament player that is super aggressive. He took a really bad beat the day before when Jay went runner runner against him ith all the money in before the flop. Good poker...... No! .......................good for poker.......... Definitely! I didn't get on right away to bash this game because I thought people would start saying DIDN'T SEE YOU AT THE FINAL TABLE but seeing as how a thread was started and everyone agrees, I can add that I also think this is the worse display of poker I have ever seen... ever. This proves that occassionally luck can defeat skill. Fortunately, in the long run skill will defeat luck and those asshats will lose all of the money they won. And now it is justified in danny's head that calling with anything just because you are the chip leader is the right thing to do. And 90% of poker watching America is going to pick up on this and we will see an increase in the fish factor and suckout factor as a result. Of course, I am just being pessimistic but I blame ESPN for all that is wrong in the game today.Justin

The WPT event in question (as with all other WPT events so far) was on the Travel Channel, not ESPN. You can't have the fish without the suckouts. Since I need fish to make money in poker I think this is a good development.
