where is moneymaker?

Recommended Posts

Really you'd think people would like moneymaker considering hes a modest guy who went from rags to riches and proved that anyone can win the WSOP. Instead everyone finds the need to bash him out of jealousy I suppose.

I would say he probably isnt broke, but maybe back to were he was pre-wsop 03. I mean life in the fast lane can kill you if you lose your head, which he comes across as a guy that would. Not that he had to lose money at poker, just flat out spending it badly or playing casino games. He quit his job and is a "pro" now. You would hear more of him if he was still on top of the poker wave and a successful "pro" player.

I agree. I don't know why people like to rag on Moneymaker. He played very well that week, and was a little lucky. One thing you can't say, is that Moneymaker lacked guts. He made some really good calls, that would be hailed as great if one of your favorite pros made it. Moneymaker is one reason this game is great; if you play your best, you can beat the best, even if you only have half the talent.

The guy's an accountant, meaning he's probably pretty good with money.I highly doubt he's broke or even close to it.
even the most frugal people could change if a couple million dollars was dumped in their lap.i'm not saying he's gone broke, but i'm not saying this is a 100% valid reason for him to be in the black.

I cant believe there are so many uninformed posters on this forum.
Amazing isnt it?
Yes, he is in the middle of a divorce. He does have a new girlfriend. I dont know how nasty it is but I'm sure its just like any other divorce.
He remarried recently; Like I said, amazing. ;-)Patrick

2.5 million from the WSOP. Half to taxes. Half of that to his father who took half his action so tht he could get out of debt. Call it 600K. 2nd in the WPT behind Phil Gordon, half taken in taxes. Call it 700K now. Half of that to his divorced wife, plus possible lifelong 50% rake to his ex. 350K now. (All back of the envelope calculations of course).Ok. This explains why he kept his day job, at first anyway. 350K is a lot of money, but not enough to "wealthily" retire on, if you are an American anyway. He does commercials (and other stuff) for PokerStars, has a book out, does other endorsements. He got dumped pretty early in the 2004 WSOP after showing the bad judgement of getting drunk the night before til 6am (per his own words on ESPN).Is he broke? I doubt it. Is he rich? I doubt it. Is he smart to stay away from the WSOP events? Yes, in my humble opinion. However I personally would bet he shows up for the main event to "keep his face out there". Even if he busts early it doen't mean a damn thing one way or the other about his talent. In fact, it keeps the hope alive for folks who are total amateurs that they too can someday win this thing.I don't hate him or admire him. I do envy him to a certain extent though, with that envy ending with what past/(present?) gambling problems ne had/(has?).

he has to be broke. his debts when he won the main event, divorce, child support, his gambling addictions in his book, taxes on his main event winnings, the fact he was 55% staked............etc!!!!this guy is worse off than Elixx Powers! ("he called with jack high")

you guys are retarded, because he is getting a divorce he must be broke? give me a break. There is no telling how much money pokerstars, pokerstars.net, his book, his dvd, and ohte rendorsements are paying him. No one has any idea, same with all the other pro's, saying someone is broke because they arent playing in tournaments is stupid. What if he invested it all in google now he has tons of cash...

then cut all that in half....at least. plus lawyer costs and court costs. Divorces are awful expensive. Not saying hes broke, but he damn sure wont have the money he did.

Half to taxes? Try 30% or 35% tops. Nobody pays 50% in taxes.

I'm sick of hearing this. He was also an accountant before his wsop win, was thousands of dollars in debt and had a huge sports betting problem.

I dont. This is why:"Next Case" - ' I busted you when you had the second best possible hand! I'M a POKER GOD. '"You're not a card player; you play the cards" - Another egotistical and lame statement. "You have the ass-end of it [the straight]" - Mini-blonde chick (forgot name) decides to ridicule another jerkoff who got broke with the lowest possible straight on board. Hey, you are not supposed to help the bad players!!! DUH!!!! (p.s. he should have back-handed her)I'm sure I could think of more examples, but it would just be redundant.Tilt was lame. All of the actual poker action consisted of 3 smartasses (the main characters) peddling the nuts to someone jerkoff who happens to have the 2nd nuts.

Right... try remembering there is more then just the income tax, and he would qualify for the top bracket at 2.5 million, which I think is currently 45%. There are other taxes he would have to pay, but I'll let someone more qualified then me talk about that. He does luck out being from Tennessee (no state income tax). Also something that I haven't seen mentioned on this thread yet, he cashed at a PLO event at last years WSOP. (10th) And he has a couple other cash ins to go with it. At 2,744,239, (*edit*) 9th all time on the WSOP list, 28th for all time tournament winnings.Which to reiterate the point, doesn't include endorsements, the book, etc. Which could well be worth more then his take of that 1.7 million. And not all of it is slash in half, anything he earned after his wife filed for divorce is his.And the WSOP is 6 weeks long this year, it wouldn't be unreasonable for someone who isn't a top pro to just show up for the last 2 weeks.

Negative.Highest tax bracket is 35%. If you make $500,000, 35%. If you make $10,000,000, 35%.

Moneymaker is not some degenerate gambler who's going to go broke in a few years playing poker, he's an accountant and I think he'll be living pretty good for the rest of his life.
Possibly, but in his book, he does come close to describing himself as a degenerate gambler.

you are also entitled to deduct gambling losses up to the amount of your winnings, sounds to me like he probably has a good chunk he could deduct.

Someone who knows what it's like to be so deeply in love that you just feel like taking a shovel to someone's face"Wow - I never associated LOVE with wanting to beat someone with a shovel...lolHere is really what made me think this was a joke...General Interests listed as "Poker, drinking, the occasional cocaine binge, but nothing too serious. I also like reading travel guides and home repair manuals."Man I can never get enough of a good home repair manual........LOL........
