aren't card clubs highly illegal?

Recommended Posts

I was at AC and struck up a conversation with a guy who mentioned that he was opening up a club around my area. Now I've been reading about tons of poker busts lately, and while I know that it is not illegal to gamble for money if the house is not profiting, his operation certainly sounds like it will be run from the rake profits. He even mentioned that the club will be serving drinks (I doubt this place will have a liqour license) which I believe makes it even MORE illegal. I want to go check the place out, since if I can play there instead of AC I will be able to find a regular game within 20 minutes driving distance instead of 2 hours. I've never played at a card club before and was wondering if any of you guys frequent one.

Have half a dozen clubs which I frequent and have never felt unsafe at any of them. Judge for yourself, if the place is run in a professional manner go there and play and have a good time, if it seems a bit slip shod in its management and isn't run like a legitimate business(which is how you want your club run), be careful.

These card clubs try to get away with what they think is a loop hole in the law. Offically the state goverments consider them illegal. However most of the time these places are left alone as the authorities consider a very minor offense. It isnt until someone makes a big fuss about that it gets busted (usually dealing with underage people there or drugs). A lot of these places have been operating for a very long time so I wouldnt worry too much if you happen to go to one. But if you do go, dont take your entire bankroll. If they bust the place, they can confiscate just about anything there including the chips on the table. You can just consider that money gone. And I've even stories about the police taking the money right out of people's wallet. If there's a legit casino with in a reasonable distance, you're much better off going there. They're safer, more entertaining, completely legal, and there's more money to be had there anyways.

Since you like to read, you should pick up Poker Nation by Andy Bellin. It'll give you a good idea of the gray area in which these clubs operate. I think you're right about the liquor, though. I'd much rather be caught running a unlicensed poker room than an unlicensed drinking establishment.

Card clubs in Indiana are illegal. Regardless, there are a number of them. I play at one regularly in Indianapolis. No booze is served. If the ones you are interested in are anything like the one I go to, they are careful and will not likely be raided or anything. Have fun. Bring friends at first, until you know how the atmosphere is going to be. Leave your extra money in the trunk of your car. Only bring in what you're going to buy in for.

the NJ Dover incident is isolated and NYC is fine except for Manhattan now.it is a potentially illegal activity but you won't run much risk at this time. The risk of course is you lose all your chips at the table.

Excuse the crappy writing but I'm busy playing poker etc...Yes, these clubs are absolutely 100% illegal, no matter what anyone says. Then why do they exist? This is the U.S. and when there's a will, there's a way -- the insane popularity of poker only fuels this particular industry.Having said that, I played at a club in NYC and have been to another. The club I played in was great but it was a younger crowd, which isn't always a bad thing, especially in terms of potential profits. The funny thing is when I attempted to play at the club which I just visited, they wouldn't let me play since I wasn't 21... which makes no sense since the club is highly illegal in the first place. In fact, I just read that on May 30, NY Players Club (the club that wouldn't let me play) was shut down by the NYPD and they confiscated $100k in cash... I'm not sure about the other clubs in NYC but I heard most of the NYC card rooms were raided.

Even in NY and PA, it's still a gray area when it's a "charity" running the show.I've played in tourneys for Soccer Clubs, Volunteer Fire Departments, and even Churches. Odds are they are probably technically illegal, but the local cops (no big cities, all suburbs) aren't going to bust them.

Definitely illegal. I ran one for a while, but we got robbed at gunpoint. The same 4 guys have robbed 5 to 10 clubs in Atlanta.Running a raked cardroom (in Georgia) is felony commercial gambling. The biggest game in Atlanta (4 tables 2/5 NL) got raided by the cops (1 month after getting robbed) and every player and dealer was arrested. Every players got misdemeanor $1,000 dollar tickets and a 23 hour stay in the county. 5 dealers and house guys got bail between 5,000 and 25,000 dollars, and were charged with felony commercial gambling. That's why I"m not running a game anymore in Atlanta. It's really too bad too, that was the most fun I've ever had in my life.

That's hilarious that they won't let you play if you're not 21....I wonder if they're just scared to lose to a kid
If I ran a club and some kid came in that looked like he was still in high school, I wouldn't let him play. The last thing I would want is for him to lose a bunch of cash and his parents finding out. I guarantee the parents would be on the search for my club and send the fuzz.

I live about 50 miles Northwest of Philadelphia, anyone know of any possible card clubs in my area so I don't have to make the 2-3 hour trip to AC unfrequently.

To the two that play in Indy:Could you tell me more about the clubs down there? Are they exclusive (do I need to know someone)? What games do they spread? I live in Lafayette, it might be fun to come down and play sometime. Hmmm

I used to live in Chicago area and still frequent up there with friends and family. Anyone know of any clubs that are in the western suburbs, say Naperville area?
No point going to a card club in Illinois when Hollywood Casino is right down the road from Naperville. The game is very loose and profitable.

Good point, just more curious if there is anything else in the Chicago area, considering there are at least 4 that I know about here in Indy area.

Figure if it is legit or not. I played in one that was not, they served alchohol also, and I was there the night it got busted by the cops, I got arrested too. The people were nice and the games were good so i figured why not. I now look back on how stupid it was, play online if a casino is too far away.
