Sushiman 0
The point of poker is to extract maximum value out of your hand, and this is what bothers me. Say you have either the nuts or a huge hand on the river, do you prefer to push extremely hard and hope the opponent calls an outrageously large bet, or do you bet something reasonble (say pot sized or less) to at least garuantee a small payoff?I've run into this situation a good number of times and I'm always plagued with the feeling of "damn that guy probably would have called ten more dollars" or "wow I could have gotten at least $3 if I didn't bet so hard."I'm used to playing live with my friends who will not call outrageous bets, but internet play seems to be a whole different animal. I feel like I am not maximizing my profits.
SabaAba 0
Your answer is in your question. If you know the player will call an all-in bet with a second best hand, then bet all in. If you know he is solid and will only call a small bet with a second best hand, then bet small. I like to over bet the pot with monsters, it makes you seem like you are trying to buy the pot. And, if you get one caller calling you all in, it's like getting 10-20 callers calling smaller bets each time. So if I don't know my opponent, I will most likely push all in. If he calls I will note that he does so. If he doesn't, I will try a standard bet the next time.
Kendren 1
I guess the correct answer would be....It depends :PSome players will call overbets thinking you're bluffing, some will let their hands go thinking it's not worth it. It comes down to individual players and your reads on them.
DeNuts1 0
You also need to consider your position. If you are in early position and there are still 4 people in the hand with you you might want to consider making a "reasonable bet" if you feel they will stay in the hand. Where a large bet may get only 1 if any callers. Say pot is $60 and you bet $80. You get 1 caller you have made $80 on the river. But if you bet $40 and get 3 callers you have made $120. Just something else to think about. This is of course assuming you are talking No Limit. You didn't specify.
BigLebowski 0
When you find out the cut and dry rule on this let me know. Like you said, it is about maximizing your value. Getting 5 people to call that $5 bet whether it be in different hands or the same one is equivalant to one person calling a $25 bet. Just last night I was playing some NL100 on PS and put a guy all in on the river with board JT8T5 because I knew he rivered the flush and woulnd't be able to let it go. I had T8. The pot size was $25 and I put him in for $60. What I didn't expect was to see a 7 high flush from early position. If I didn't have a good read on him I probably would have only bet $1o or $15 just to try to get a call. All about the SITUATIONS.
