2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs Thread

I don't know how they survived giving up all of those powerplays; it should have been suicide.

But the Sens were strong in the faceoff circle and on the counter-attack all night long.

True, but Mactavish doesn't get to take credit for Devan's success, nor does Shanahan for Kessel's. And I will continue to be bitter because it's sports and I don't have to be forgiving and understand

Bruins with zero shots in the 2nd period vs Ottawa.

This isn't directly related to the Niskanen incident, but his comment inspired it.   Everybody who injures someone claims they had "no intent to injure," But like, if you're running someone who does

Guy Boucher has gone back to the trap he used in Tampa. Pitt wasn't ready for it, and honestly, Ottawa probably should have scored more but for a couple of posts and great saves. sullivan and tocchet are great strategic coaches. They'll figure it out.

Pitts had 3 posts, Ottawa had two... game could have gone either way.

I saw Ottawa using a 2 forechecker 3 back setup more than the 1-3-1 trap. a 2-1-2 perhaps?

2-1-2 is their pressure forecheck, which is a weak side flush forecheck from what I saw. Force the puck up the strong side and then lock ( F3 forward drops back withD and forms a 3 across to wall the blue line.

When they don't pressure (ie the forward stands in front of the goalie and waits for the D to move the puck) they use that 1-3-1

It's weird, Boucher is totally trying to NOT get scored

On. And it's working. Even in the offensive zone Ottawa often lined up a forward with the D on the blue line so there was 3 men REALLY high in the offensive zone.

It. Is. super. Boring. To. Watch.

Pretty much; though it's somewhat entertaining as it allows their d-men (well Karlsson/Claesson) be able to activate offensively all of the time.

Props to Boucher for picking a system that works with the roster you have I guess.

More like props to the GM for picking a coach that comes with the system that works for the roster you have.

That might have been the first Pens game all playoffs where they out-Corsi'd the other team. Lol.

Really good showing. Ottawa looked like they were trying to protect a 1-goal lead for the 35 minutes leading up to the Kessel goal. Pens were dominating puck possession but just couldn't break through.

Sens had some sustained pressure in the first. Ended up about even. 2nd and 3rd were all Pens until the Kessel goal, then the Sens only got their first shot of the 3rd with like 2 minutes left with the empty net. Lol.

Interesting game. Seems like the key is to not fall behind 1-0.

Gotcha. With the injuries the Penguins are racking up (ie: leading to fatigue from a short bench / weaker players w/ callups) if the series goes long Ottawa stands a better and better chance. That being said -- holy shit they need to step up their game.

In game 2 Pitts used their speed a bit better to break down Ottawa's trap and counter Ottawa's breakouts.

Schultz is a big loss. Pens top 3 D are gone.

Rust can be replaced reasonably well. Kuhnhackl is a solid replacement. Or Hornqvist could come back anyways.

I agree though. Pens need a short series.

Other than the wrap-around (4th goal) where Fleury over-commited a bit I don't think the really was at fault for any of them.

Yeah, I agree. Was surprised they didn't pull him after 3.

The goal on Murray was kind of an lol goal too. Puck just kind of stuck around for Turris. Kind of summed up the game well. Bounces going for the Sens, Pens not bothering to go for the loose puck or take the body.

I guess there's a certain amount of panic in Pittsburgh, they really don't want to risk going down 3-1. Lots of compelling arguments to start either goalie tbh; no right answer unless you using hindsight tomorrow morning.

Hindsight only: Murray is the better goalie. Do you risk Fleury returning to form? All I wanted in the world was Flower doing it, but I dunno.

I got a lot of faith in Sullivan, and it seems he was right. I think it was more of a tactic to shake the team up, rather than to punish Fleury, but I dunno. It's nice to be able to sit your Stanley Cup winning goaltender to bring in your other Stanley Cup goaltender, though.

Yes, Shaw was suspended because:

1. not a star player

2. there was a close up of his face on TV screaming the gay slur

3. there was widespread outrage because of 2.

Getzlaf not suspended because:

1. Star Player

2. Playoffs

3. Less media outrage

4. No damning video footage, even though nobody is denying that he did it.

It is equally disappointing and unsurprising that Getzlaf gets only a slap on the wrist.

I'm glad they distinguished between faggot and ********** and have explained how ********** is worse...smh

Pretty bad. Back in the day (about 25 years ago) I ran a rec hockey team. The majority were asian players. Probably around 90%. We got called names all the time and only once did they catch it. The guy got a 5 game suspension.
