The Trump Presidency Thread

Recommended Posts

A.J. Rose Manufacturing relies mostly on European steel to make its powertrain components because American mills, which typically make steel from scrap, produce a material that is too variable for the precision parts his company manufactures, Sweeney said. U.S. steel producers don’t want to work with the company, which has $75 million in revenue, to fabricate steel to its specifications because it’s too small, he said.

“If the foreign steel got expensive it would make us less competitive,” he said.

The reason our steel production capacity is where it is (degraded) and cannot service his needs for more refined steels is because we had naive trade policy for too long that killed off most of the batch producers.

Whether or not we can bring back a more robust steel manufacturing base through managed trade policy is to be seen. If we can, he can get his boutique/custom run alloys at a price that would crush the same thing, imported from anywhere in Europe.

The article is not entirely off base in noting that we cannot hamstring American manufacturing to bolster American steel.

This is a tightrope.

He misses me so he's trying to fill the void with a sugar substitute ( that's you suited )

I've had it.   He did not ****ing dispute the story   He made a statement about things that weren't in the ****ing story which means he confirmed the ****ing story.   Jesus Jumping Jimmeny Chris

he should throw a gay person off a building while he's there or kill someone for drawing a cartoon. really get into the spirit of being a muslim.

"This will kill more Americans than Al Qaida & Isis could ever kill but at least your healthcare won't be named after a black guy". #Trumpcare

I don't think 'Trumpcare' will ever stick.

But the republicans will own this new plan.

It's probably not fair, and many on my side were saying they should just let Obamacare completely implode, warm their hands by the fire of the disaster, then repeal it completely.

But Obama succeeded in changing the national dialogue regarding healthcare.

Look at the non-stop insistence on the need to cover people with pre-existing conditions. This is not insurance, insurance doesn't work after the need for it. You can't decide to buy home owners insurance for your house after the fire starts, you can't get auto insurance after you drive your car into a lake.

If you want the type of healthcare that Canada has, then say it, but that's not insurance, that's 'free' healthcare, single payer.

Instead the democrats backdoored the republicans and basically destroyed the healthcare insurance industry, driving up costs, while forcing companies out of the healthcare insurance business. These actions were obvious, and the republicans had numerous people saying this is what they are doing with Obamacare. My personal insurance doubled in premiums, then canceled all together. No amount of money would make my insurance company sell healthcare insurance in the state of California.

Republicans saw it, walked into it, bought it, and now own it.

Not fair, but politics isn't fair. They were too stupid to just repeal and instead they replaced.

Now the media will rediscover the problems with medical issues and we'll be deluged with story after story of medical disasters in individuals for years. All while pretending that if Obamacare was still around, these same people would not have gotten sick, and in fact we would have cured cancer and insomnia while saving money and keeping our parks clean.

This is no different to how the press suddenly cares about deficit spending, when they ignored it for 8 years,

Government getting into single payer and having a national debate about rationing would be one thing.

But government getting into insurance will only result in higher costs, and a corrupt set of rules that favor the group with the biggest lobbyist. Guess what...normal people don't have lobbyist.

Enjoy watching the 'need' for the government to create a new bureaucracy to handle healthcare for America with a budget larger then the GDP of all but 8 countries in the entire world. Can't imagine any reason politicians want to get their hands on that kind of money...

How does Comey tell congress that Hillary's aide with ties to Muslim Brotherhood, sent 6,000 classified emails to a person being investigated for child porn to print out for her, for years, and NOT prosecute her?

Does anyone even know why Scooter Libby went to jail? Because the investigation on Plamegate was never about Valeria Plame.

A shitload of people have, including Donald Trump (directly, and by implication as recently as yesterday). The first major politician to propose it was not Roosevelt or Jimmy Carter. It was Richard Nixon.

The Republicans are bought and paid for by multi-billion dollar insurance industry interests that exist because of (and profit from) health care extortion. As a result, they feed their "anti free health care" talking points via outlets like Fox News and it suddenly becomes an auxiliary issue that all good conservatives know to support, even if it's directly in their own best interests and they don't particularly understand the details. Such is the nature of partisan politics.

We support your gun rights but in exchange, here are the other 10 things you're supposed to believe.

Republicans could pull a "Democrats With Blacks in the 60's" type move and guarantee their relevance for another couple generations by becoming the party demanding a single payer national plan and leaving the Democrats to own the bag of shit that is HusseinHealthcare.... but in politics, money talks louder than people and insurance companies buy and pay for politicians.

Insurance companies give money to both sides.

Republican base opposition to Obamacare was based on government becoming a nanny state.

Think about this, a decade or so ago, a couple lawyers ( probably democrats) decided to go to government and sue Big Tobacco in a class action lawsuit. I forget actual numbers, but lawyers made deep in 9 figures in legal fees. Government's claim was based on fact that people who got sick from smoking were being cared for with government programs like Medicare, therefore government had cause to sue.

Now have government take over all health coverage for everyone.

Then introduce democrat lawyers like their previous candidate Edwards, who file class action lawsuits every chance they get, having a client who has 'cause' since they have to pay to fix broken legs from motorcross accidents, obesity diseases from McDonalds, murders from twinkie consumption

Add to this part of Pandor's box that politicians, who find ways to screw up posting a letter, will be putting the type of people that oversaw Katrina and run the DMV to take care of all things healthcare....

I agree it's a potitically smart move, but it's a really bad move for the world when the US decides to take it's military spending away from protecting their borders, and instead pays $700 for an aspirin administered by a nurse and 3 lawyers

These actions were obvious, and the republicans had numerous people saying this is what they are doing with Obamacare. My personal insurance doubled in premiums, then canceled all together. No amount of money would make my insurance company sell healthcare insurance in the state of California.

ACA was the only way common healthcare could be introduced (because of an obstructionist Republican house / senate would never allow for the tax increases needed for universal healthcare). And it was based on the health care model introduced in Masschusettes in 2006 while Mitt Romney was governor and was based on right-wing white papers.

Oh but the Republicans blocked all attempts to properly fund high risk pools. They put politics ahead of people's lives.

Now was ACA an ideal end-game? No ... but this new Trumpcare is going in absolutely the wrong direction and has more to do with masking huge tax cuts to the 1%. They claim the high risk pools will be supported but put a fraction of the money in that is needed. Nevermind the 20? states that turned down 90% funding for expanded Medicare.

The Republican position that people with pre-existing conditions should go f' themselves because apparently everyone is inherently healthy and the only way you get sick is by your own fault. Which either smacks of criminal levels of naiveté / misunderstanding of science or worse... caste-based eugenics.

There is no reason to buy health insurance if I can wait to get sick, then buy it.

And if no one buys insurance except people who are sick, how long will insurance companies sell insurance?

But it sounds so compassionate, we want people who are sick to be able to buy affordable health insurance. No matter if they chose to not have insurance to be able to afford a new car, no matter if they are 80 ponds over weight and smoke. It's not their fault they can't get insurance.

Insurance is a basic human right.

Moot point, you've obviously not heard, but republicans are the ones claiming they must have pre-existing condition coverage or they won't support the changes to Obamacare.

Either it pushes us to single payer, or we watch another government run health program implode in a few short years.

Both paths result in an unstable world while we pull back to our borders. We'll let those little countries pay the price, as long as liberals can lay their heads on their pillows knowing they care.

since this is happening every day in many ways it's become almost normal but an occasional reminder about how Trump and his extended family are enriching themselves is warranted.

The Kushner's are basically saying invest in our project and get an EB-5 investor visa and a Green Card and in their presentation are highlighting their connections to the President and US Government.

You got to respect Putin, he saw Trump becoming president before Trump did!

Shame only Russia tries to influence foreign elections... Maybe we should tell the CIA to start working to get pro USA politicians in power in places like Iran.

Prediction: At some point, the emoluments thing gets very, very real.

If the Democrats get control of Congress in 2018 for sure. If not it's hard to see the Republicans doing anything against Trump.

So the republicans grant him consent, non-issue. Not that paying for a hotel room is in any way close to being the same as a present from a foreign government.

The democrats are so desperate. It's like they actively are running Trump's re-election campaign.

Democrats won't be getting control of congress unless republicans start a war, begin mass deportations of hippies, AND decide not to run.

Dems are in complete disarray, without any vision or plan other than "We hate Trump." Expecting them to retake house would require republicans to totally screw things up....okay there is a chance.

The emoluments clause has never been tested.

While not emoluments clause related, Jimmy Carter put his ****ing peanut farm in a blind trust to prevent the appearance of impropriety. He may have been a retard, but he was an honest retard.

No title of nobility shall be granted by the United States: and no person holding any office of profit or trust under them, shall, without the consent of the Congress, accept of any present, emolument, office, or title, of any kind whatever, from any king, prince, or foreign state.

So, no President may receive emoluments from any foreign state. Trump's businesses have received several valuable IP concessions from a Communist state which, by proxy of its governance, is an emolument. This was immediately subsequent to Trump withdrawing the request to label China a currency manipulator.

Nobody is really talking about this, but this is the case they should make if they were smart.

There are a lot of things people aren't talking about. For example, the Dodge St Regis.

While this era represents the absolute nadir in American automaking (in both form and function), I maintain a modern body-on-frame V8 powered 4 door sedan with a tow hitch and optional transmission cooling package, enough trunk space to hold four snitches, plenty of room in the back seat to fit 3 adults comfortably with leg room and readily accessible ashtrays for everyone is something that the American public would rush to re-embrace. Does it have to be boxy? No. It can be 'streamlined' if that's what these assholes want but we left a good man on the battlefield when we decided that the only way to get 'comfort' in a vehicle was in an SUV.

We need to bring back the full size utility sedan for everyone. It's time.

This isn't just Trump. This sort of thing would be going on with pretty much any GOP President. They really don't give a ****.

I'm torn on the EPA.

On one hand, there have been absurd excesses by the EPA against individual citizens, just like with other Federal regulatory agencies that have a 'lets get 'em' culture (the BATF being the other obvious ones) .

On the other hand, if there is no enforcement of environmental regulations, then industry will pollute to obscene levels.

I think we can lower the EPAs staffing footprint if it corresponds with the harshest possible sentences for any C Suite executives in charge of any company that is found guilty of polluting. If there's a mandatory 20 year minimum for the CEO of any company caught contaminating a river, we wouldn't need a bunch of chickenshit regulators. Just the threat of very harsh consequences and occasional field tests.

Making a government agency accountable and lean should always be the goal.

A business perspective.

Politicians see large bloated budgets and they get erect thinking they can either run it themselves, or siphon off some of the money to get reelected.

Throw a bunch of beaurcrats in jail every third year would do wonders too improve services.

BLM can tell a farmer he cannot farm on the land he's farmed for 4 generations because it's now the habitat of the kangaroo rat. No explanation of how the kangaroo rat had survived on that land for 100 years, but now it's endangered so the farmer must sell his now worthless land.

Cut all their budgets by 50%. Find people that can make it work, profit.

One of the biggest regulatory scams is 'wetlands'. Some day, that story will be told but the basic idea is that in the 1980's, they adopted a 'no net loss' policy and declared that no more wetlands could be destroyed, however you could purchase 'credits' to destroy wetlands through 'wetland mitigation banks', whereby people would buy otherwise useless swamp or marsh land and then sell very high dollar 'mitigation credits' for developers to destroy wetlands on an as-needed basis.

Ducks Unlimited tells the part of the story where they have 'conserved millions of acres of upland bird habitat for American hunters and sportsmen'.

What they don't talk about is that they're almost certainly the largest 'wetland mitigation bank' in the country, meaning that the right to destroy more wetlands is issued by Ducks Unlimited than anyone else.

Nobody has told this story. I had a lightbulb moment about it one day when listening someone crow about how much wetland acreage had been preserved by Ducks Unlimited, about a week after a relative of mine had to purchase a $30,000 "mitigation credit" to put in a driveway on some land he purchased, to satasfy the state Department of Environmental Whatever. Sure enough, did a little research and...

http://www.ducks.org...land-mitigation

This is all 'carbon credits' would be. A way to put a permanent 'tax' on what amounts to all human productivity under the bullshit pretext of 'saving the environment', to be paid to governments.

You could convince a liberal to drink a gallon of bleach if you told them it would help save the whales.

You could convince a conservative to drink a gallon of bleach if you told them it would help save a soldier.

So, whenever you need to summon a constituency to get behind something they really don't understand, try to create nexus with one of their trigger-issues and they'll mindlessly support it.
