Fcp Summer 2016 Weight Loss Challenge

lol. It depends what you replace soda with.

I'm really coming around to the realization that I need to ditch my Diet Coke addiction. But I don't know what to replace it with. I think I'm addicted to the caffeine, and probably the aspartame or whatever. I think it's having a terrible effect on my health, but I need a plan of action to fill that void. I can't just drink water. It's too boring. But what do I drink? Do I switch to coffee for that caffeine? Do I drop caffeine all together? I've had a cold lately so I've been drinking Gatorade, but there's no way that's a good thing either. Lol.

Im trying homemade unsweeten Iced Tea. Haven't given up Diet coke all together. I seriously love the taste and would drink six glasses a day if it wasn't unhealthy. Not a Coke Zero fan at all (sorry Bob)

My Diet Coke problem is out of control. I've been drinking 2 710ml bottles a day at work, plus whatever I drink if I go to a sit down restaurant for lunch or dinner. It's getting bad. My first step is going to be try to cut it down to one bottle per workday. Then maybe wean it further from there.

Iced tea sounds good. Hmm.

5 Lipton Tea bags into a full pot of boiling water. Let sit for 10 minutes. Pour into container. I usually add 2/3 more in cold water (but its your preference how dark or light you want the tea)

Add 3 containers of ice cubes. Put in the frig. Usually good in an hour.

Most of the time I drink it straight but sometimes I add a sugar free sweetener after I pour a glass. I never put the sweetener in the container

Black coffee. Nectar of the gods.

on the weight loss front. Kinda fell off the wagon as I tend to do in the last few months of the year. Gained a few pounds over the holidays for sure.

Every January I go booze free from New Year's to super bowl. Been doing it for about 5 years now, just kind of a detox, plus I read it's really good for the long term health of your liver if you are a regular or heavy drinker (I'm not really a heavy drinker but I do partake). This year I've decided to also cut out sugar for January. Been going well so far, not really having any problems. Also been getting back to making my own lunch and breakfast, and not snacking much during the day. Down about 5 lbs since the start of January, though I think my initial weight on January 2nd was highly inflated (water weight) after all the crap I ate and drank over the holidays.

Did I tell you guys about the cult I joined?

And how it has me making homemade meals 3+ times per week (including leftovers for lunch!). It's called Chef's Plate and it's the best thing ever.

Tea is actually delicious too, and an enjoyable drink with less or no caffeine. I usually have 3 or 4 cups of coffee between 8-12 in the morning, then a couple cups of caffeine free tea in the afternoon. I like Green Tea a lot, and it is supposedly very good for you. You can get different flavours like cherry or lemon that are really good, and sugar free.

Cult, lol. Tell us more.

Cult, lol. Tell us more.

I only call it a cult because I find a talk about it so goddamn much now.

Chef's Plate is a Toronto company that delivers fresh ingredients to your home in the form of meal kits. Each week I pick 3 out of 7 recipes they offer. Always changing, always interesting, always innovative. They send the right amounts of everything. No food waste. I learn how to cook and I cook food I'd never in a million years do on my own. Fresh produce, fresh herbs, fresh pastas. It's the best.

All you need is olive oil, salt, and pepper.

Each recipe makes two servings. Though often there's enough to make one dinner and two lunches.

I'm enjoying the act of cooking nearly as much as I am eating the unreal food I made.

For example. This week I made:

Provolone and thyme stuffed pork chops with a cherry tomato sauce, potatoes, parsnips, and Brussels sprouts.

Brown butter sage gnocchi (homemade!) with a baby arugula salad.

Butter chicken lasagna.

Anyways. I'm obsessed with this shit. Every Thursday at midnight the new menu goes up and I always refresh until I see it. It's the best.

For someone like me who needs a strong nudge to cook more, stay off preservatives, etc, it's a good deal.

Probably costs a bit more than groceries, but I think it's worth it. Meal costs are about $10.95 per serving. Less if you do a family plan.

That's cool. There's a few companies doing that now. Blue Apron is another one, not sure if they deliver to Canada. I love the concept. Doesn't really make sense for my situation, but I could 100% see myself doing something like that if I was single. It takes a lot of the intimidation out of cooking more complex recipes I would think.

Do you think it's helping you learn basic cooking fundamentals as well?

Thats good you're getting into preparing and making more "meals" for yourself Zach, than just grabbing the way-too-easy burger+fries/pizza/random fast food. I love that, I wonder though if as a family we would be paying way more than just slightly above grocery costs.

get off the diet coke. do it now. you know it, just do it. Try the ice tea thing John mentioned, thats a good one (I did that too for a while, but I went to water), and then try your best to FORCE DOWN water for just 1 day or two. Go 48hrs, call it a bet against yourself. whatever, but I think maybe you might be surprised at how quickly your tastes/needs change. I find as soon as I go back to water for 48hrs, I no longer need Coke Zero...I want it, I dont need it. But if I had some last night, I want more tonight. Its seriously an addiction, and I am like Steve, I lose weight when I take myself of all sodas, even diet.

re:weight/bad eating

Personally, I fell off the wagon a bit in the fall, and then made a point of sticking to a 'diet' of sorts up until the holidays. From Dec 16-Jan 6, I went a little bonkers with the food+booze. Lets face it, its offered to us everywhere we go over the holidays, and as Armenians, we get it right up until Jan 6th! lol

But I made a point of getting right back on the diet this last week, and exercising throughout all this as much as possible, and Im back at 205 today. Goal is to get back to the 190 by March that I was last summer. It wouldnt be that hard, but I have a work trip coming up and part of it is a fun trip to Barcelona for 4 days which Im sure will involve lots of eating+drinking.

My next goal is to get better into working out, and building some muscle, especially around my shoulder that keeps dislocating. Hopefully in February I get on that. (im hoping I write it here, and read this post in March, and it embarrasses me enough that I start doing it finally, lol)

Yeah, they pretty well openly admitted that they stole the concept from Blue Apron. They deliver to much of Canada.

I do think it's helped my basic skills. I don't need to YouTube how to dice an onion anymore. Lol.

My grocery buying skills need serious work though. Lol. This takes that hassle out of it. Especially if it's an ingredient you won't use often.

Anyways, I love I. I enjoy cooking. It's a nice pass time. And it's delicious and a hell of a lot healthier than take out.

I decided I'm doing no booze/sugar for February this year too after Super Bowl. (feb 6th-28th), since I will be cutting my Dry January short a week early for the second straight year on account of going to the all star game (jan 27-30). Also, if the Cowboys make the super bowl, I probably won't drink anything on Super Bowl weekend this year as I would be cancelling my annual super bowl party/poker game.

I was just joking about the soda part but i have not had one in over 3 years. Did not lose one pound. In regards to what I replace it with nothing really. Ate the same etc

Now with my diet I have not had a cup of coffee since dec 30. Low sodium food only. 8 pounds gone and counting. I use to drink 4-5 cups of coffee a day. So I am saving close to $10 a day plus we eat at home. I find myself st the grocery store buying fruits and veggies

The best part I am out of the danger zone but the fight continues

I don't think they are "good" for you, but not as bad as diet pop I would assume.

I drink a fair bit of the "zero calorie" vitamin waters. Probably not good for me, but it satisfies a sweet craving and it's gotta be better than drinking a pop, but maybe not, who knows.

I stopped due to the caffeine. It was one of the main reasons for my reflux. Had to quit a few other things like cinnamon rolls, donuts, peanut butter, and chocolate. Life sucks now. But my chest doesn't hurt when I swallow anymore.

Zach, you might try carbonated water. Can be flavoured or unflavoured. Sounds a bit weird but when I kicked pop for a while, it really helped. It's more interesting than water and I think the familiar bubbles kind of killed the need for me to reflexively grab dark pop at my normal times
