Zach6668 513
Barkov calls himself Finnish. Wtf is wrong with you? This isn't like a mystery. He plays for team Finland in international competitions. He was born and raised in Finland. How are you not getting this?
Babying 613
That is a tough question on being born and saying you are Finnish. I get all that. What I am saying is if he is Finnish why does he have dual citizenship? I know lots of people who are born and raise in Canada but still say they are from their Father's homeland. Who knows what the reasons are why he choose to play for Finland. Look at Steen, he choose Sweden (maybe he could not crack the Canadian lineup) and Steen is really a Canadian since he grew up here & his Dad still lives in Winnipeg (as a City Councillor). So I see Barkov as both Finnish and Russian.
Zach6668 513
His Dad was Russian. You're not wrong. He's listed as Finnish-Russian on Wikipedia. But the whole reason I brought it up was because Duane was referring to the Russian factor when thinking about who to draft, saying he would take neither because Filatov scared him off. Barkov doesn't have that Russian factor. Barkov did not grow up in Russia, he did not play in the KHL, etc. He doesn't have that risk (real or otherwise), IMO.
Babying 613
I was always under the opinion that he was Russian due to his name. Never knew the Finnish angle until now. So I would have made the assumption about the Russian angle too.

Just to throw more wrenches into this discussion, I don't associate Filatov with the "KHL issue". Filatov didnt work out in the NHL, and he only left because no one wanted him, really. Also, we should discuss players like Zherdev, Morozov and Frolov. (I say this only because I plan on doing everything I can to hijack this thread from its intended subject matter)
Fenxis 99
Filatov didnt work out in the NHL, and he only left because no one wanted him, really. Though not wanting to go the AHL to work on his North American game didn't help either...
Zach6668 513
Yeah, I think Filly had attitude issues. It's not like he's even doing well in the K right now, either. 8th on his team in scoring. Let's talk about Morozov. He was awesome. I don't know why he went back, but I don't think it was because he hated the NHL, or was enigmatic or whatever. I always thought differently of him, anyways. I always loved this: Morozov wins it in overtime then celebrates by tugging the logo on the jersey to the crowd. He was definitely also a victim of just being on brutal, brutal Penguins teams. Babying 613
Morozov would have been an awesome player.
Zach6668 513
Morozov played 451 games. He gets an NHL pension.
