SuperJon 175 Posted October 26, 2013 Share Posted October 26, 2013 For martial arts fans, that was kind of a somewhat kinda-sort-of meaningful Hollywood film since it was essentially about Muay Thai, a very credible martial art form. Up to that point, most movies in that genre were based on Oriental fantasist fight-choreography absurdities like Wing Chun, Kung Fu, etc. There was that gray period in the 1990's and into the early 2000's when MMA hit the scene and most TMA's were shown to be impotent Hollywood nonsense. Anyone who came up in the 70's and 80's as a kid was undoubtedly influenced by those movies and probably believed that a 'bad ass' looked like a little Chinaman waving limp wrists in front of his body and making high pitched noises. Reality couldn't have been any further from that but it does go to show how influential 'popular culture' can be and how a huge group of people can believe in bullshit. Still, to this day, there are TMA studios promoting bullshido. I just liked that it pretty much stole the Rocky formula of using 3/4 of the movie as training and the last 1/4 as the final showdown. Except with martial arts, which back then (and even now), interested me more than boxing. Also, trying to recreate the well scene in the bottom of the pool, as a kid. I'm pretty sure it won the Academy Award for Most Awesome Quintessential 1980s College Film. I remember reading somewhere a while back that the nerdy female love interest was the inspiration for Rescue Ranger Gadjet Hackwrench. And, really, it's a solid film. I just did some googling, and it was pretty well reviewed. I guess I always thought it was MY weirdly random movie, but I've been disabused of that notion a few times recently. These are three that were already mentioned, but I really loved. Also mentioned, but I don't view as "80's": Indy (all three; my favorite probably being the 3rd, but it changes between all of them) Top Gun Chariots of Fire Hoosiers I don't think any of these movies even mildly shout "80's", like the spirit of the thread. Top Gun is the only one even set in the 80's; the others obviously have no 80's connection. However, Tony Scott was such a great director, the only even mildly 80's montage (volleyball) still seems 'cool' (in a really gay way). I feel like I didn't explain my feelings clear enough, but whatever. I view Back to the Future as a definite 80's movie, but I just don't view Top Gun the same way. Link to post Share on other sites

They don't make movies like that, with casual, open white racism anymore. 48 Hours is another example. The others will pop up on a lot of lists (deservedly) but you liking Summer School, and me liking Summer School has me questioning myself. Maybe I don't exist and I'm your Tyler Durden? I prefer Weird Science, and will reliably confuse the two in my mind. Like when someone mentions Real Genius, I will automatically slot in "Weird Science" which is how we got here. Nomination for the thread: Less Than Zero--again, I feel like it's either Less Than Zero OR Bright Lights, Big City, and LTZ is just better and hammier and more terrible and has that great sequence where you see the boom operator looking into the camera. Well, the writer thought "palm trees in Nebraska" was a plot hole, so I don't really trust anything he says.
