I am considering running for public office here in Pickering, and fighting against fake politicians.

Against my better judgement Ill try and respond to you..Everyone else in the thread has been respectful in their arguments, but you seem to attack my integrity and beliefs when it comes to this issue. Bringing up Dany Heatley really?

You either dont understand, or fail to read my posts and comments on the subject. I have NEVER condoned his behaviour..I have always stated that the man has a problem...Its pretty obvious from the things that are going on. Actually today he finally admitted to having an issue and he is trying to get professional help.

No one (well I dont think I ever) said that doing crack cocaine and whatever else he did was a mistake in judgement...He has a problem in his personal life....

He has done a lot for his city and his community. Its obvious he loves this city...His coaching of football and helping inner city kids through the sport for 12 years is well documented. His policies , cutting perks for politicians, the transit etc are well in line with my views...He is also someone I can relate to..He is a real man, with real problems...Not a fake politician..Not a hypocrite like his detractors...He is also a huge huge sports fan..Especially supporting the teams of this wonderful city. The more I read about his policies, the more I agree with him..

Does that make me a right winger, that hates the tree hugging, bike riders downtown? Maybe...If so I apologize for my political views..But I respect everyones views on politics and political events, even if I choose not to agree..

From what I have read, before all this came out a HUGE majority of Torontonians loved this man and would vote him in again easily...As a matter of fact a recent poll showed that even today after all this, after all the drug use, drinking, allegations more than 20 percent of Torontonians would reelect him today...Thats ahead of a lot of other candidates.

Rob Ford also has a LOT of problems. This isnt new...His drug use, DUI charges in Florida go back 15 years...He is human..He is obviously overweight, has a drinking and most likely a drug problem.

I am not forgiving him for lying, I am not condoning his behaviour..I , much like others, have compassion for a man, a politician that was voted in by a huge majority...

I hate the hypocrisy of the politicians. They say they cant get to work, they say its a distraction..Well the councillors and the left wing media( yes I will keep using that term) are the problems.

I really enjoyed reading Chris's post( other than the fact it was purely structured esthetically). However we have differing views on the media. He seems to think they are doing us a service by going after Rob Ford..I think its the same as the paparazzi that go after all the celebrities and digging up dirt where 80 percent of the stuff is false..Also I dont think we can equate movies stars, sports celebrities to Rob Ford...He isnt an entertainer, he signed up to serve the city and make it a better place to live in.

In recent months the Globe and Mail and the Toronto Star look more like the Toronto Sun and the National Enquirer then a legitimate newspaper. Thats not what we want from our journalists. They hound him all day and night, at his house, at his moms house...Everywhere he goes..Yes its bullying, yes its a witch hunt...

Did Rob Ford bring this on himself, absolutely....Does Rob Ford deserved to be lynched and prosecuted in public , hell no....Should Rob Ford step down, or at least take an extended leave of absence...YES ..100 percent yes..

Maybe we both agree on the subject if you look at it closely enough. I see a good politician with views that I agree with, that has a lot of problems...A lot of personal problems.

We shouldnt attack a man and pile on, and bully him just because we want to see another joke on the Jimmy Kimmel show.

We shouldnt laugh, we shouldnt ridicule...Its a human tragedy...Its a man with a lot of demons..If the councillors and the media dont back off a bit, its not going to end well....This is a Shakesperean tragedy we are watching unfold on CP24 every day...The ending will NOT be pretty..

Yes he is in denial, yes he doesnt see it..But lets show some compassion...Lets try to stop the public flogging and lynching and the constant harrassing..

IMO, you are entitled to yours.

I appreciate your passion and how much it means to you. I strongly disagree with you on just about everything, but also appreciate your empathetic and patient approach to just about everything. That is to be commended.

The only thing I'll argue is about how much good he has done. Like Arp said, I can't find much in his politics that are actually positive. He likes sports...that's good I guess. He has said that he would cut back on politicians overspending...while at the same time using his office to get donations for personal causes, broken procedural rules to get things done his way and hired unqualified friends, criminals and drug dealers as paid employees. He's the most corrupt person there and yet his big talking point is railing againts corruption?

You can be a car loving, card carrying right winger and still appreciate and value improvements to mass transit / biking.

The Mayor is very different today..

Not angry..Very calm..He is understanding, soft spoken..VERY different than even as early as yesterday.

The PR person might have finally got to him..But too late I think..

Council is now passing motions to limit his powers..

Perhaps he's realized the jig is up.

ya possibly..

He also isnt talking to the media in the scrums..

Something he should of done weeks ago, instead of opening up his mouth and saying stupid goofy things nonstop.

He seems to accept more responsibility now...

Or perhaps, like many addicts, he's prone to mood swings.

What do you guys think of council limiting his powers? I'm not really following, but if they can legally do that, it seems absolutely absurd that it took them this long to do so, and more importantly, it reflects even more poorly on some of the terrible tactics they employed over the last while if they had the ability to do this instead.

Might find myself agreeing more with serge after all!

It goes against the democratic process.

The people voted the mayor in, the people didnt vote to limit his powers..

This is why we have elections..

The mayor said he will take it to court and fight it legally...Also sets a terrible precedence..

For the record the Mayor hasnt been charged with a crime, there is no proof that his problems have caused him not to perform his duties..

There is due process, courts, police that are a part of the democracy we live in..

Except for the part where he lied on his daily agenda about where he was and what he was doing. Wait, did I miss it? Nope, he didn't lie..

Jun. 16/13 1:00-1:15 pm Meet with drug dealer at gas station to exchange packages.

Oh wait... yup. He did lie. The man who screams about councillors being accountable for their time lied on an almost daily basis about where he was and what he was doing.....

Councillors act on behalf of their wards, where they were voted in through an election process, so thereby, executing their legal power in limiting the mayor is a democratic process in and of itself.

edit - what Zach said.

I don't think it sets any kind of precedent, other than having some kind of way to limit someone going wild that doesn't involve jail time and the actions of an unrelated and uninterested governing body (the Province).

Most importantly though, I'm sure we agree that if they could do this, then so much of the crap and debate and pointless non-binding motions to have the mayor write an apology letter were even bigger wastes of time than we thought, since they could've at least been trying this. Right or wrong, there's no doubt this is a course of action more consistent with their opinions then having debates on whether to vote on asking someone to write a letter or to draft a document asking him to take a leave of absence when he's already refused to do so.

Don Peat@reporterdonpeat2m

Iceberg Vodka issues a statement about Mayor Rob Ford: "Iceberg Vodka whole heartedly believes that 'if you drink, don’t drive'"

LOL I'm expecting a statement from Fruit of the Loom any moment now about how they support crack; but not the drug.
